What do you mean what would happen?

They would fail to qualify, you answered your own question.

If you think it would send soccer back to the middle ages, you're wrong.

But your hypotheticals are amusing, Australia will get through to the next group stage, and you one code hippies can shove it.

If it happened you could kiss 2018 away, they are not going to go through another South Africa, Cant wait to see them in action in 2010...scores of 30-0 maybe? They will only give the World Cup to dead set certain qualifiers.

And If we have no World Cup to look forward what is our next big tournament at International level? Asian Cup HAHAHA dont make me laugh it would be 2014 World Cup, suddenly Soccer is boring again and A-League will suffer for it.

You fool.

Lowy and the FFA have already been advised that they are not really in contention for the 2018 World Cup. Plus, they have stopped the rotation policy for the Cup, so Europe will not miss out on 3 World Cups in a row. It will be Englands Cup to host, bookmark it... 2022 also gets decided at the same time, so we could hypothetically get that tournament.

They dont just give the World Cup to "deadset qualifyers". USA got it in 1994 when they hadnt qualified for a Cup in 39 years.

Whoever wins this group dosent qualify for the World Cup, there is still at least one more, and possibly 3, stages of qualifying left for those teams that progress.

Soccer wont be boring because not everyone thinks like you narrrow-minded peanuts. Will it be a setback, yes, but not to the extent you guys are thinking it will be.

And Australia will get some kind of result against China at home, put your house on it.

My predictions for the games not including Australia is for China and Iraq to draw and for Qatar to beat Iraq. If we hypothetically lose both games the table would look like

Qat 10
Aus 7
Chn 7
Irq 5

If we get a win against China we are probably through, irrelevant of other results. Even a draw could be enough...

It's unlikely. If you think Australia were pathetic to lose to Iraq, well you're wrong. I watched the whole match and saw Australia dominate it, however like the World Cup game against Italy, we were unable to score and and they stole 1 freak goal. Iraq's goal was close to the only shot they actually had. We need Bresciano, Cahill and Aloisi in.

China have been deadset horrible, and we have them at home. We will go through mark my words. And i think a draw will come from the game against the mish-mash, erm i mean Qatar.

The funny thing is that people claim not to worry about "soccer"....yet they take every opportunity to put it down, which clearly indicates that their ego would take a massive hit if people in their own country were following a different code.

It must hurt the topic creator that soccer, with all its setbacks in this country by a number of redneck hicks, is still so widely accepted, and is growing and growing, and growing.

Do those words hurt? Grow...?

We get 7 points from a maximum of 9, then we lose 1, and now its all over apparently? Clearly you know nothing about "soccer", so why even take the time to try and put it down.

The A-League is going to continue growing irregardless of World Cup performances now. It needed that boost, but it has foundations which will see it at worst, sustainable in the future.

Infact I completely understand why people put down other sports, its because they fear it. Plain and simple. Nothing else to it. If you hated it, and just hated it for the sake of not liking what is happening, you wouldnt feel the need to tell everyone. But you have, which shows that you fear it in one way or another.

Anyway, if Australia dont qualify, I hope the Australia AFL national team can..... oh ****, I forgot.

The other thing is that people think because no-one is criticising Aussie Rules on this site, that the game is most popular and perfect. Im not going to criticise Aussie Rules, because I like the sport. That dosent mean that these kind of people dont exist...

To quote one person from the Perth Glory forum. "How come its only in Aussie Rules that grown men in very short shorts and sleeveless shirts get to jump on each other and grope each other? And they think we are the gay ones..."

here we go again with your rant's.

You have blown up over nothing. Don't get so upset.

You call Aussies who don't have an interest in the socceroos un-Australian and continue to bait the AFL as a 'so called supporter of AFL'. You Hypocrit.

What are you worried about?

Is it that time of the month or are you upset that Australia was beaten by a Country in the middle of a war. Either way, your out of line to throw a tantrum like that and deserve a back hander to the chops for your effort.:thumbsu:

Why did everybody (as shown on TV) imediately jump on the Aussie goalie ?
It was a superb (if a little freaky) shot .
I didn't hear one person congratulate the strike .
A "we lost" mentality rather than "they won ".

If Australia had to lose to one country, I would rather it be Iraq than Qatar or China.

Half the country were watching the Iraq Australia game, and it is the only thing that can unite Sunnis, Shias and Kurds.

Why would anyone deny the Iraqis a little soccer joy in what has been a horrific past few years.

The Socceroos will likely make it through this stage of qualifying. But they've got another series of games next year to qualify for the World Cup which will be much tougher; and they're no certainties to go through that. I hope they do, and they should, but it's no certainty.
Australia qualifying for the 2010 World Cup, should it happen, won't have any direct impact on the AFL. Australia competed in the 2006 World Cup, and I was one of many who had some insomniac nights while the tournament was on; but the AFL continued and I didn't see any signs of the AFL being adversely affected in any way.

This thread was created to elicit responses like "soccer in Australia would be dead again, cos its a boring sport, and no one likes it"

If you cant see that, then you are a fool. Im giving soccer fans a bad name? Please, people who hate soccer, like the topic creator, already have a preconceived and unjustified opinion about soccer fans.

And you know what? The smell of victory is great.

It may be an urban myth that the top brass at the AFL always opened up the champagne whenever the Socceroos lost a game.

Whatever the truth, I am sure they would not be too happy with Australia's progress towards the 2010 World Cup in South Africa.

One positive to come from the Socceroos defeat of Qatar is that Australia will now get eight more World Cup qualifiers over the next year, four of them on Australian soil, against the likes of Saudi Arabia, Japan, North and South Korea, Uzbekistan and Iran.

Each of these crucial home games will be broadcast to a worldwide audience of multi millions, and will net the FFA at least $3 million per game.

The FFA sponsors and Foxtel will be licking their lips.

The only downside for FIFA is that China, with its billion plus population has been eliminated.

There has been a spate of articles in the papers recently about the business potential of the Socceroos. This has been accelerated by the fact that we now have a leader who can see beyond cricket, rugby and forelock tugging to the Queen and Princess Camilla.

Socceroos mean business

By Guy Hand. Daily Telegraph

June 13 2008

THE Socceroos are set to become the sporting team that gives back to Australia and its taxpayers as they attempt to leverage millions of dollars in trade for the country through their Asian World Cup qualifying journey.

Australian soccer will receive $32 million in federal funding over the next four years. But Football Federation Australia (FFA) believes the sport is in the unique position of being able to repay that with interest by boosting trade with booming Asia and the Middle East, thanks to frequent Socceroos matches played in the region.

"We can help the government, we can help the corporate sector connect with different parts of the world so in some ways that's a way for us to repay the investment that's been made by the Australian government,'' Football Federation Australia boss Ben Buckley said.

Austrade's chief economist Tim Harcourt said the top-ranked Asian Football Confederation nations accounted for nearly $76 billion of Australia's exports, making the sport the ideal platform to encourage trade links with Asia.

The first steps have been taken during the Socceroos' World Cup qualifying campaign in the Middle East. The team, led by skipper Harry Kewell, were the guests of honour at an Australian Business in the Gulf lunch in Dubai.

The United Arab Emirates, of which Dubai is a part, is Australia's 17th largest trading partner worth around $5 billion in trade last year - mainly in the business and construction sectors.

More than 600 Australian companies have a presence in the UAE and there are between 15,000 and 20,000 Australian expatriates living and working there.

Austrade's Dubai-based trade commissioner James Wyndham said the Socceroos' current campaign through the Middle East promised great spinoffs for Australian business in the region.

"What the Socceroos are doing today is bringing together 200 Australian CEOs and business people, building the glue for these Australian companies to do business here,'' Wyndham said. "It's also raising the profile that Australian companies are here, they're on the ground doing a good job.

"If we can have the Socceroos as this wonderful marketing platform going around the region flying the flag for Australia, their success on the field is certainly replicated in the boardroom as well.''

The FFA also used today's lunch to launch a major charm offensive to bolster Australia's 2018 World Cup bid. Buckley has called on all Australian expatriates to become unofficial "ambassadors'' for the World Cup bid, spreading the word why Australia would be an excellent World Cup host.

I don't see anything wrong with either of those comments.

Of course Demetriou would say the AFL isn't scared of soccer. They aren't - the AFL's in a very healthy position and hasn't been hurt by soccer at all. The AFL wasn't affected in any way by Australia's World Cup performance last year, and was hardly overshadowed.
As for Wallace's comments, of course coaches will make comments talking up their team and promoting their game. If that's the worst examples of "acting like spoilt brats", it's an absolute storm in a teacup.
