View Full Version : Is Armfield now a part of our best 22 ?

I know it's a big call, but I've really been impressed with this young gun, in the NAB club and in the last couple of games ...

He just has so much poise and just really looks like a ready made player ...

Another quality draft pick we've drafted mid-range in the draft, ditto Steve Browne, and I really think it's great that those kids, and with the continuing improvement of 'Grigga' adds so much depth to our list ..

I mean, we basically played yesterday with 2 of our best defenders out, yet somehow we plucked out a win, so that is a very promising sign, when we have no Bower, Jammo or Walker, and we still beat last year's GF on their home turf.

Hopefully Ratts can keep Armfield in the side, I think he's going to be a real solid player for us ...

if he plays to the standard of his 1st 2 games then definitely in our best 22.

He has something we have lacked so much of. Pace. I absolutely believe he should be in our best 22 if he continues to perform at the level he has been playing at.

EMERG: Browne, Grigg, Wiggins/Hartlett/Edwards

Bloody oath he is. As I've said in numerous posts about the guy, he brings much needed attributes to the team in areas we are lacking: pace, tenacity, ability to run and carry, and ability to tackle, HARD!

Shouldn't leave the side for the rest of the year IMO.

Will be special.

I would drop carrots and swap him with browne... Carrazzo needs to go, he is terrible. Such a liability, does anyone else cringe when goes near the ball.

My team would be this

FB: browne, Jamison Bower

C:Simpson Bentick Scotland
HF: Gibbs Waite, stevens
FF: Kruezer Fevola Betts

R: cloke, Judd, Murphy

I/C: Armfield, hampson, Fisher, Russel

absolutely.

can play in the back line, and then late in the game when our midfiled is starting to tire, he can play in the midfield. has a huge engine, is hard, is fearless & takes risks, and has a great disposal for the speed he is running at!

well done to the recruiters :thumbsu: best pick up in years. a 21 yr old overlooked twice, who woulda thunk it.

carrots may have bad disposal, but at least he runs and runs and runs and is hard at it. so many times yesterday he was there to help out our defenders getting the ball out of defence. without him our backline would not have looked as good as it did imo.

would much prefer carrazo over heath 'nancy boy' scotland

him and browne were fantastic pick ups.

I think Hartlett will be great value from a #25 pick, as long as he gets on the field

from what I have seen of "Army" or "Dangles" he would be in my best 22.
And I am not saying this because he is indeed my Favourite player.
I have watched him perform in the Ants games this year & he uses his pace & has determination & when he does get going, his tackling is unreal.

I think "Dangles/Army" has done a wonderful job in his first couple of games, showed poise & skill & he is very very vocal within the huddle from what I have witnessed at the bullants games.
The only thing that disappointed me from last nights game is that they did not have "Army" in the middle when singing the song..... it is tradition for a player who has his first win go in the middle....... Army was on the outer with the rest of the boys!

Keep ARMY in against Collingwood..... his pace is what we need.... he will match it against Thomas, Didak or Neon Leon. :thumbsu:

He has been fantastic in his first 2 games, there's no doubt about that, but no, I don't think he is in our best 22 when everyone is fit.

Guys like Walker, Banno, Bower, Jamison etc. are all out injured currently, and will come back in to the side. Unfortunately, as they come back in, guys are going to have to go out of the side, even if they are a bit unlucky. That means that boys like Armfield, Browne etc. are all eventually going to be pushed out of the side for one reason or another.

I'm not saying I'm not impressed with him. On the contrary, I think he's been fantastic and definitely has a future at the club. But at the moment, he's a depth player. That's the beauty of finally building a side with pretty good depth - each and every week, there will be some players that are unlucky not to be pulling on the Navy Blue.

Armfield is the first non KP backman that should be named at the selection table going on current form.

By faaaar. This bloke just fits in with the team, and he knows what he's doing! I don't think i've seen a bloke looks so composed since Marc Murphy's debut. Definately in the best 22.

Smashed Pierce last night too, which shows he has a defensive bone in his body.

The few dashes he made through the middle looked sensational.

God we need some speed like this.

Going by his first two games, he's definitely in the 22 so long as he keeps playing as he is. Whether he can keep it up, is another story. You often see young recruits make an impact before struggling for form, but hopefully Armfield, being a bit older and experienced at senior level will be able to keep up his form.

9 Jun 2008, 17:17
Simply put, no.

He has been impressive in his first two games but is not in our best 22 when everyone is fit. Otherwise he would have been in well before last week.

When Walker, Bower, Jamison, Houlihan, Bannister are fit and available, players like Armfield & Browne will be the first to go.

While these two have been impressive, they are behind the above mentioned players. However it does show a bit of depth at the blues, which is encouraging.

And those who have Armfield ahead of Grigg are off the mark. Grigg has been one of the more impressive performers this year for his defensive roles on playmakers (shaw & p.burgoyne)

The draft last year has bought in players that should be at the Club and be in Carltons' best for a number of years, Kruz, Browny, Army, Hads, Judd Michelle.

Great work recruiters most impressive draft, trade last year two more years like that and we will be unstoppable

Unlikely.

Armo's right on the fringe of our best 22 if everyone's fit i reckon, although he's probably overtaken a few blokes who have played for quite a while now. Still, most sides rarely have their best 22 on the park all at once, so I think there's every chance Armo will play most of the season.

He's got a few weeks to improve before guys like Jammo and Walks are ready to come back in, and Bower sounds like an '09 job, so by the time we get back to sending some of the current side back to the Ants he may have done enough to keep getting picked.

Have been very impressed with his hardness, skills and decision-making. These attributes have already got him to around line-ball with Carrazzo in terms of selection IMO. His pace is a bonus.

Dunno about our best but he should play a fair few games yet, has been impressive and deserves a few games for Carlton, it'll help his footy, he is a player I believe will improve a lot more, especially by playing AFL footy

This young man will eventually be one of the great success stories. He has that ability to make you sit on the edge of your seat as soon as he touches the ball.

I don't think the coaching staff would be that dumb to drop him just because a couple of bigger 'name' players might be ready to resume playing. I'm thinking he will make it tough for the Walkers, the Hadleys and the Bannisters to force there way back in. And that's a great thing for the Carlton footy club.:thumbsu:

without a doubt. We've been killed by the little speedsters for years, army is the man to end this.

houlihan NO, say yes to army

best 22

armfield Jamison Thornton
Bower Waite Scotland
walker murphy simpson
gibbs cloke bannister
betts fevola fisher

Hampson Murphy Judd

carrazzo grigg kreuzer o'hailpin/russell

pending matchups o'hailpin in for someone but were too tall with who i have in as well as him against some teams

In a lot of ways Armfield symbolizes what the Navy Blues are all about right now. Young, inexperienced, confident, certain, fearless, determined and with plenty of scope for improvement. I like the boy, I like what he brings to the team. I like what he embodies, what he represents.
Go Army.

tough question to answer. But if he keeps playing like he is(a big "if" mind you-tough for rooks to keep it up) I don't see how he could possibly be dropped

We need speed, so I think we can find a place for him.

No one seems to be including Houlihan in the best 22 - put simply, your kidding yourselves. With our backline more settled, and Walker to come back soon, I think he would be played up forward, and we are screaming out for someone with his skills up there.

Answer is fairly simple CP - F@#K YEH!!! :thumbsu:

Pace, determination, poise, accountability, efficient disposal, in-built confidence and belief - he's a bloody beauty. ;)

strongly disagree with houla. todays game is about moving the ball fast. He does not do this. if there is a place for him its on half forward, but on HB i dont think there is

I made the point in another thread, but up forward is exactly where I'd like to see him played, our forwardline is not set by any means, and someone like him would be exacty what we're looking for.

However, didn't mean to take attention from the thread topic. Though, while I might agree, it is a very premature thread.

Agreed. He has only played to games, bit hard to make a judgment after two games, just look at Simpson, didn't even touch it in his 1st 2. However, he has played well these 2 games so there is no reason to drop him as yet, and if he keeps this level up he will no doubt be a solid contributer to the team, just a little too early to say best 22.

My tip is IN. Given his mature body i think it's more likely Browne may be given a spell before Army. His pace and tackling is just so important to our structure.
