Alot of people would have been surprised when the Bulldogs & Scotty Clayton was all over this kid back in 2004, a rugby ex pat, from Queensland, a massive punt with such a high investment at pick 6 in the 2004 National draft.
Alot of "so called" experts would have been scratching their head with this one, as well as alot of Doggies supporters.
A player with such limited time in Aussie Rules, where's most kids from Vic, SA & WA start playing when they are 6 or 7.
But, Clayton has proved over time to spot talent, and now, hopefully with his bad luck with injuries behind him, could very well be a 200 game tall defender.
The more you look at that draft, the better it has been, especially up top :
1 - Deledio - would be so much better in a good team, will be a gun
2 - Roughead - gun tall forward
3 - Griffen - gun mid
4 - Tambling - has taken a while to come on, but starting to show
5 - Franklin - no explanation needed
6 - Williams - looking good in the Dogs backline where's height has been an issue for years.

Tall, Athletic, quick, looks like a perfect CHB for todays game. always knew he had some talent, good to see hes starting to play 1-2 good games in a row. hope he stays uninjured for the rest of the year
id say last year was a saviour for his career if he didnt start showing something he wouldnt have been their for too long, but i think its starting to pay off hes great athletically and has very good wheels. Also hes a suprisingly good user of the ball, could be a fantastic key tall for the next 10 years.

wouldn't it be more useful to look at the rest of the first round?
he's certainly not really lived up to expectations, 4 years after he was drafted.
now starting to show something, but it's about time too. will all depend on if keeps going on with it.
So much more improvement left in him.
I think though, having seen what he's capable of to date, he was a good pick up. It's only going to be injuries from here on that ruin it for him - in which case you can't really judge Clayton on that.

kept franklin to under 6 goals in a game where the hawks had less than 40 inside 50s. ;)

I think he's going to be a great player. Add Grant & Everitt and the Dogs have some nice KPP stocks.

Firstly Buddy only kicked 5.
I'll put Tom Williams effort in perspective for you.
Buddy Franklin's Averages
Goals = 5.4
Behinds = 3.5
Scoring shots = 8.9
Contest marks = 2.3
Disposals = 15.9
Buddy's game Vs Tom Williams 3rd game back from injury this year
Goals = 5 (.4 less then normal)
Behinds = 0 (3.5 less then normal)
Scoring shots = 5 (4.9 less then normal)
Contested marks = 1 (1.3 less then normal)

scoring shots were 7, love how you guys make things up.
Inside 50s were 35, 50 less than normal.

What expectations were there on him, next to none. He was a project. Played 6 games of AFL footy in his life.
This kid is a huge talent. Bulldogs and Scotty Clayton need some Kudos here.
Hopefully his body can hold together and the Bulldogs have a future KP star on there hands.

Buddy only kicked 5??? Oh my god! you killed us in the middle Buddy didn't get the supply he would usually and he still kicked 5 goals.
C'mon now you don't seriously think Williams beat Buddy do you?
If any player kicks 5 goals on any day would have to say they have beaten their direct opponent wouldn't you?
Buddy's stats were below average for him, but your midfield was the main reason for that, shit if the midfield had of been on a par with yours that day Buddy would of kicked at least 8!
scoring shots were 7, love how you guys make things up.
Inside 50s were 35, 50 less than normal.

Nooooooooooooorrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr rrrrrr
And for ____ sake! If you hadn't noticed, i wasn't saying Williams was better then Franklin. I was saying Williams is better then others that have played on the freak Franklin. Open your mind, read my original post again. I was putting Williams effort in perspective.....as in....'Well if Franklin is the best in the league, then Williams did a good job.'
I won't hold my breathe for an apology though.

[QUOTE]wouldn't it be more useful to look at the rest of the first round?
If you want to do that, you go for it, was just merely looking at the first few picks, and the more you look at it, the more it stacks right up against the superdraft of 2001 - Ball, Hodge, Judd.
he's certainly not really lived up to expectations, 4 years after he was drafted.
Bit of an unfair comment considering the shocking injuries the kid has suffered, broken & well as stress fractures of the ankle, can't blame a kid for being injured, whilst he hasn't played alot of games as yet, he hasn't played all that many in the VFL either due to those injuries, so it's not as though he's not performing and getting dropped back to the VFL!
now starting to show something, but it's about time too. will all depend on if keeps going on with it.
Let's just hope that his body is now right to go.
