View Full Version : If we were winning, would Brock...
I'm pretty sure we are all aware of how well Brock is doing despite his wayward off-season. His maturity on field has developed well, doesn't seem to be giving away as many free kicks as he had is previous seasons, and his numbers are all up. I was thinking about the Bulldogs, and how all the talk is about Adam Cooney's stellar season, it helps when you have a solid defence and potent attack.
As another alumni of the 2003 draft, if we were winning this year, would Mclean be getting similar plaudits?

definately... we aren't winning games so we are attracting negative publicity...

Cooney is a bit more damaging, he has that ability to chip in with goals whilst Brock is a bit more in-and-under, less flashy.
I definitely think his output has been ignored by certain members of this board though, the orgasm over Green (for nothing more than a couple of marks running back with the flight) , and pleas for him to get the captaincy, was a bit over the top if you ask me.
Green leads by example which is all well and good, but Brock does that and more. There was a shot of the huddle after half-time where it was obvious Beamer and Brock were the ones addressing the troops.

Your right with what you've said about Cooney, he's more of an outside player and gets noticed more because he has that blistering speed and kicks more goals.
I think last years incidents will be forgiven and if he keeps playing like this and keeps his head down over summer, he'll be rewarded with the captaincy and rightfully so.
I see him becoming a Mitchell or Simpson type captain. He might not be the most naturally gifted player, but he tries his ass off every week and still manages to be considered amongst the top players, the sort of player who makes up for the short-comings of their natural abilities with the amount of determination in the way they play with.
If Brock continues this form and behaves off the track, then the captaincy should be his. I'm going to call it now, if they don't name a captain until next pre-season, they'll be waiting to see if McLean behaves in the off season, then the captaincy is his.

Cooney has probably gone back in front of him but your right it does help when you are winning, it's hard to be a game breaking midfielder when you are 10 goals down. I'm still questioning his fitness, I think he looks slow at times this year but I'm sure he isn't slow. Could be a matter of watch out if he can get his speed up. The goal he kicked on the weekend highlighted how skilled he is by foot as well. On the captain thing it is Brock v Green for me with McDonald in for 3rd, Brock plays with a little more leadership, Green would be a surer bet in terms of off the field media and other duties.

Agreed, though the Simpson comparison is probably a bit harsh.
Brock is by no means quick but his disposal is fairly good most of the time, its the bald nut in our midfield that has the questionable disposal.

Jones's disposal, by both hand and foot, has improved by a lot this year.
How awesome was his pass around the body to either Miller I think. He was travelling at full speed with someone right behind him!
McLean probably wouldn't be getting Cooney level plaudids and fair enough probably but he'd definitely get at least a bit of praise.

Whilst Cooney is better Brock is a seriously under rated player in the AFL. Having a very good season and you'd think he'd win our B & F. Mick Malthouse gave him BOG honours on QB.

If you actually watch him you would know he ahs the best workrate of any1 in the team and is from from unfit or slow. He is never going to have davey like speed but he is far from slow. His stoppage work has improved so well this year probably thr reason why he is finding so much of the ball. He skills are sublime he is the best in our team at hitting targets in general play and going forward.
