View Full Version : Harry O
This bloke has flown under the radar this year. 6 weeks ago some where calling for him to be droped(which I found strange) and I reckon he is now close to our best defender. He has towelled up several opponents in recent weeks and also provided plenty of rebound. He is extremely versitile and has now learnt how to spoil. He is now starting to become a very very important player. Its taken a while but he has won me over.

I agree that he is just about our most important defender.
The #8 jumper is in very good hands.

Have always been a massive fan. Love the bloke. He has certainly turned his form around, and is a very important player to us. I reckon he has replaced Clement at this stage (not quite as good... yet), to be honest. Rock solid, versatile, and an excellent rebounder.
Let's hope he towels up Fev, because he got spanked last time.

He's taken his game to another level this year ... Just hope he can hold Fev on Sunday.
If there's one query, I'm still a little nervous when he kicks ... anyone else share this?

His kicking efficiency has been close to 100% so I never worry when it is in his hands.
The number one thing I find in Harry is his ability to keep his feet in every contest, showing its value of being the defenders golden rule. He is rarely out of sight when his opponent is on the lead, and struggles to find himself lose a contest when the ball hits the deck.

My thoughts exactly. Whenever the ball enters the defensive 50 there's always going to be a bit of nervousness when watching. It's always relieving to see the freight train of Heritier take off.
I can see him getting one of those Army awards soon if he didn't get it for his goal the other week - very courageous.

Not as good as Clem yet, but more explosive and athletic - potentially could exceed that lofty mantle. Could eventually be a top forward or mid even!?

When he was towelled up by Fev, our midfield was slaughtered so he barely had a chance.
More even contest in the middle will see a better contest between him and Fev.

I'm also hoping he gets a chance to redeem himself, and Malthouse doesn't go to something different for the hell of it.
Another defender within 50m would be nice, though.
Now Harry's decision making has improved his general level of play has improved.
As someone mentioned earlier, he has a great ability to keep his feet in a contest (something Clement excelled at). Harry has a great deal of core strength through his hips that makes it difficult for opponents to throw him off balance or to bring him down in a tackle.
He's a ripper of a rookie draft pick for sure.

Do you get the feeling MM could've helped Harry out that day but decided to throw him to the wolves a bit and give him a learning experience? It might have cost the game but I just feel MM does this kind of thing sometimes, often to the detriment of the side in that particular game but looking at the bigger picture.

MM was questioned about this after the game and said that he was reluctant to give Carlton an extra player in the middle by dropping a player back.
I understand what he's getting at, but still think we should have dropped a player back into Fev's space. It's a thankless task marking Fev when Carlton are cutting you open in the midfield.

Good thread, I have been thinking about this over the last few weeks.
Harry's kicking has improved out of sight this season, he not only keeps his feet in a contest but has anyone else noticed that when in a marking contest he makes the spoil and also takes the ball away because he has kept his feet. Absolutely invaluable.
Anytime now I see him running off half back after beating his opponent in the contest and then also taking it away I smile because I know something good will happen out of it.
Well done Harry!!

Love his balance/strength, also seems to have an uncanny ability to spin in traffic to give himself space, little bit like Pendles..That said, even when he is tackled, very few are strong enough to hold him he has so much core strength.
Not sure if Fev's the go for him this week though, I prefer Harry'O on the more athletic players. I don't think he's ever not won a contest against a small forward. The only times I've ever seen him play badly is on bigger blokes like Lucas last year and Fev..That said, he's still usually very good on bigs..
Best defender at the club by a mile..
