I have read that in 1999 when we finished Dead Last:( That we had PP 1 and Pick 2 but Something about the Farmer Going to Freo and White going to the Dees. The AFL gave Freo Pick 2 because they got screwed or something.
So we Lost pick 2 which was Hasleby, So I am saying would we of Drafted Hasleby instead of Getting Pick 3 and Trading it?

I dont know if that is correct. If it is, I doubt we would have gone for Hasleby, would have been Pavlich with the second pick I dare say. From what people say Freo picked Hasleby at 2 because they knew that Richmond would pick up Fiora at 3 leaving them Pavlich at 4.

Yes That's Correct. We had Pick 1 And 3, Traded 3 and Clinton King For 7 And Stunning Steve McKee. Got Danny Roach, We Could Have had Pavlich Instead.

In hindsight we could have the perfect 22 and the depth of 18 great players.
I remember thinking at the time that we shouldn't have traded pick three. We stuffed up and it cost us a decent player like Pavlich, etc. We have to make sure that we are smarter in the future.
I'm afraid this is a futile exercise.

Our trade of pick #3 always looked pretty dubious but Fraser was almost universally acknowledged as the best available. In hindsight, Pavlich was definitely the pick of the lot - by a street in my view.
Of course if, instead of 'hindsight' we'd had 'hinesight' at that point, things might have been different!

Now I would have loved to have picked up the Pav but If we had, would we have lost enough games in the year we picked up Pendlebury AND Thomas? Me thinks not.
Who did you trade pick 3 for?

Exactly. Fraser was touted as the modern ruckman prototype and we needed a ruckman with Monkey on his last legs.

We would probably have a premiership if Pavlich played in the 02/03 GFs...

might not of made them with out the stunner though.
Our only other ruck was fraser and a 20yo was never going to get us there by himself

There was not a lot of hindsight involved. The club had spent enormous time watching and talking to Pavlich. Mark Riscuito had stated that he was the best 16 year old footballer he had ever seen.
McKee on the other hand was a well known dud to every club except Collingwood. I thought at the time this was going to be the worst mistake ever made in draft history and nothing since has changed my mind.
That and the clearing of Paul Williams to Sydney possibly cost us the 2002/2003 premierships. The thing I've always wanted to know is, who made the dreadful decision about Pavlich/Mckee ???? At least with the Williams deal we got a good player in Clement, although he was useless in the 2002/2003 GFs.

Exactly right. Astute drafting that day played a major part in Geelongs 2007 flag.
Guess who Geelong got pick 31 off?
It was Carlton, in exchange for Michael Mansfield. They also traded pick 16 and 46 to Fremantle for Stephen O'Reilly. So instead of those guys, they could have drafted Chapman, Ling and Enright.
And they have the nerve to blame the draft penalties for their decade long slump. They can only blame themselves.
How many of you guys on this board can actually read?
In the second post on this thread it was pointed out by Visions that we were never going to get Pavlich anyway (unless we used the no.1 pick on him).
Fraser was the clear no.1 pick that every club would have selected. This was especially so for us as we had no ruck stocks.
Hasleby was the gun midfielder of the draft, with the next most touted being Fiora. Pavlich was certainly the most highly rated KP player.
It was well known to Freemantle that Richmond wanted midfielders, and rated Hasleby and Fiora, so that they were going to use their pick 3 on the best of those available. Therefore, instead of picking Pavlich at 2, they picked Hasleby, knowing that Richmond would then pick Fiora at 3 leaving them to still get Pavlich at pick 4. It was just some clever manouvering by Freo (for a change).
We would most certainly have used pick 3 on Pavlich if he was available, but Freo knew that and would have used pick 2 to get him. Hence, we would never have got Pavlich!!!!
It is more fair to say as the thread starter says, that we could have had Hasleby.

Yes, we are capable of reading and myself (and a number of other posters) have made it clear that we know we were always going to go for Fraser over Pavlich. Our point is that, in retrospect, it was the wrong option as Pavlich has turned out to be clearly the better player.
Nobody should be blamed for this as Fraser was pretty-well everyone's #1 pick. The ruck deficiency though, was of our own making (it wasn't absolutely essential that we get rid of Monkhorst) and, doing the McKee deal on top of drafting Fraser seems like over-kill.

I haven't forgotten about this, the above disgrace ( Parkin's fault, I hate that guy) plus the draft penalty's meant we gained no good young players between 2000-2002.

That is absolute rubbish!!!!! Freemantle had told made their intensions well known that their pick no. 2 was going to go on Haselby before the draft, so if we had not stupidly traded our pick no. 3, we would have drafted Pavlich. Perhaps it's you who needs to learn how to read.
