Just a thought, although we are building our midfield stocks, and hopefully we finnish top 4 .what are the chances,of us getting Cousens next year, and say we did, would he make that much of a difference to our midfield ? A year out of footabll is sometimes a long time !Or should we concentrate, or getting a young gun through the draft? What would we have to give up to get him if we did?
Would be funny seeing Benny in the black and white especially when we play West Coast and Carlton !

You mean Ben Cousins? ;)
Always thought if he could overcome the drug issue he'd still have plenty to offer. One of the best midfielders I've ever seen, and also one of the fittest.
Lots of "if"s about him here...
IF he can answer all of the questions about his state of mind,
IF the playing group agree to welcome him,
and IF we can get him, hell yes.
This is the 2nd time you have made this thread and the 2nd time you have spelt his name wrong??? For the correct spelling please check your own name!!
Would love to see Ben at Collingwood!!

Sorry for mis spelling his name. For some reason i always thought it was with an 'E' instead of an 'i'.
Any how the reason i have brought this thread to light again,is that i was watching a T.V interview about him about aweek ago,and Ben said that he already has a team in place that he will join next year.
That team was a Victorian Club, but no name was mentioned.
My logical conclusion led me to believe that he seems to get on well and respects Malthouse, and they were seen together not that long ago ,so that's why i thought maybe someone may know something more.
The dilemma about getting him and the reason, why there are so many IF's,is that let's for a minute assume that the club that will pick him up is us,even after Gary Pert has stated that we are not interested in him,if we finnish top 4 at the end of the home and away season season, wouldn't he
have to nominate for the draft, then what stops all the teams below us getting the chance to grab him first?

I think it will be to much of a risk for him to say he only wants to go to 1 club. If he does this he will have to nominate for the preseason draft and he may get picked up at all. I think he will go into the national draft for a bit of security. It will then be up to the clubs to decide what draft pick they are willing to use for him. The only way I can see Collingwood getting him is if they use a second round draft pick

No most clubs dont want him.
melbourne, north, bulldogs wouldnt take him as they wont risk sponsors, carlton wouldnt want to upset judd nor would they have cap room (no matter what anyone says),
essendon are rebuilding,
hawthorn cap,
geelong dont want him nor do they need him.
The unknown is where we stand in all of this do we want him? is he clean? does he want to play for us? etc
I don't think you have to worry about the year out of football, he spent most of 07 out and came back superbly. A good pre season into him which he would get at Collingwood, he will be fine and wont have to worry about the hamstring going out again.
From everything I have heard, he is far from clean. But it's all speculation.
I would love to see him clean and running around a footy field again to finish out his playing days, going to hurt with it not being in the blue and gold.

Its interesting that you say he's not clean. I don't reckon we should risk him if he's still using. Where'd you hear that rumour from anyway?? Have you got a source??

Would love to have him, depending on the price. 3rd round or later I would look at, and I don't think that's too unrealistic given the obvious issues he's been facing.

Would soak up to much of our salary cap, which is a shame
I'm not sure he would be that expensive- getting older, bad history etc.
I would love it if Benny was playing in our midfield, say what you like, he is one damn good footballer!
If he's given the all clear & our players are happy for him to come on board then I would love to have him on our list.
If he has one club in mind & that club has agreed they will take him then he'd only nominate for the pre-season draft. If he doesn't care where he plays then obviously he would nominate for the national draft.
If he made it clear he only wanted to play for 1 club then I seriously doubt any other clubs would pick him up, a bit like the Gehrig situation last year. I mean, would a club want a player with his baggage on it's list if he really didn't want to be there?
If we are the club he has in mind we may well get him for a pre-season pick which wold be very sweet.

Quoted for truthiness. :thumbsu:
The man is an out-and-out champion midfielder and I loved watching him play. It would be great to see him tearing it up again, but even better to see him do it in the black and white!
If we have to rely on Ben we are no better than Carlton at their worst.

If we have to rely on Ben we are no better than Carlton at their worst.
How is that?
We haven't finished near the bottom to get him (tanking) or cheated salary caps etc.
The guy has had off field issues, no disputing that.
Will he have a positive effect on our playing group. On-field and training track, no doubt yes. Off-field?? I suggest he'd be under very heavy scrutiny if he was to sign with us.
I'd pick him up for sure. Will probably cost us around a 2nd round pick, around the 30 mark overall depends where we finish. Aker was traded for pick 34. I think he'd get picked up before the 3rd round.
If we have to rely on Ben we are no better than Carlton at their worst.
Nobody said we have to rely on him. We are a very even team and share responsibility on the field, but the fact is a fit and willing Cousins would add tremendously to any midfield, especially ours.

I don't think we are relying on Ben Cousins for us to go to glory. We are already a very good team. We are just lacking one midfielder, most likely a clearance player, and Ben Cousins would be a great asset to get rid off that liability in having a lack of effective clearance players.
We can do without him, but our strength will be far more greater with him.
I'm on board with recruiting the fallen champion.

Could just be the difference between finishing in top 4 and actually getting the flag next year - with an already strong and deep midfield, he would just add that extra class and experience that would really overwhelm the opposition. It would be close to having Buckley back, without the leadership role.

What price, are you talking about draft round price?

The one thing that's almost certain is that if Ben Cousin's says he wants to play for Collingwood, he will play for us.
No club is going to pick him up without a full commitment to their own club, he has too many other 'doubts' hanging around him.
We would still probably have to get him to sit out the National draft and go in the internal one, picking him up with probably pick 6/7 after a few clubs lists are full.
As for the salary cap, not a problem, looking more and more likely that Rocca and Wakes will leave at seasons end, and with room from Buckley, Clement and Licca retiring, we would have enough for a 350-400k a season offer, 2 year deal.
As stated above though, i loved the way he played his footy, and if he doesnt end up at the Pies, hope he goes to a good club with a chance of playing finals.
Would soak up to much of our salary cap, which is a shame
He won't be interested in cash.
