As much as i think that fraser is injured.
I would be massively surprised if he pulled out.

bringing in reid after 3 weeks no game time? yeah not the best idea but we just need a contest thats all he doesnt need to kick ten
We just want ried there so setanta, waite and thronton all have men. If juts one is loose all day it will hurt

Yep ie Reid. Did anybody watch the Kangaroos game. That selection basically cost us the game because he wasnt match fit. And MM has done it again. Let him play some VFL before we bring him in.

I agree he was poor against the roos.
But this is slightly differnt last time, reid was unfit and difnt play due to injury (hip) i think he trained twice before the game, in this case he has still trained and only missed games as he was an emergency at least this time he wont be blowing at half time.

3 ruckmen = no thanks.
Reid should be raring and ready to go and have an impact after being forced to watch from the sidelines for 2 weeks while fit. This is his big chance.

I think it's a very balanced side.
Although we have been in terrific form over the past month we have generally gone in with the 1 tall up forward in Cloke.
Personally I'm a big fan of the 3 talls up forward structure (that's where Rusling was pivotal) so bringing in Reid is justified and provides Cloke with some assistance down there and Reid can also stretch the Blues' defence.
Pendles is a wonderful inclusion and automatically deserves a spot yet, I thought Cooky was stiff. He'll get another crack at it this year as he is one for the future.

am very happy with that side, i wouldnt want to see bryan dropped (especially against his old team)!
Reid should have an easier initiation to the year against the blues backs...
Yay Reid is in, makes me happy

yes 100%
and rotate Fraser and Bryan up foward leaving wood in the ruck
Reid hasnt proven himself yet and now his chances are becoming limited..
i hope he has a day out i really want to see him become a great player for us but i just cant see it :(

Give Reid a chance. He is 14 days older then Matthew Kreuzer. He is basically a 1st year player in age trying to play KP.

people said the same thing about cloke when he was in the 2s halfway through his 2nd season. It is a ridiculous call for a player so young. He has been one of our best in the 2s this year and has hardly been fit and had shocking service from this mids. He will be a very good player
Reid cant convert... and cant handle preasure (not that Ive seen anyway) - I hope he proves me wrong this week, but i really dont thinks he's up to this level.

hmmmm, i think that is a tad harsh. i think he will mature both mentally as well as physically with age! Cloke has been converting pretty weel in front of goal recently, if he did i cant see why everybody couldnt. he was shocking!!!

Many players come into a senior team after being out for longer than 3 weeks.

VFL form shows nothing, especially for big forwards in a bad team,\
the collingwood staff obviously see something in him, they re-signed him for a 3 year deal recently
so why not give him as many chances as he needs to show something at top level. he is very young and with a team doing so well across the park, we can afford to blood these new players...

Gee if we are going on our recent VFL form, lets hope none of our players ever get injured because we wont have anybody to replace them.

I'm very happy rhat Reid is getting a game. He didn't have the best first game for this year but hopefully he can find some form and tear it up. He probably wont be an overnight success but he needs game time and exposure to be a better player down the track.
Also a good sign that Pendles is back, hopefully he's alright to go!

I am sort of wondering that too. Certainly a huge challenge for him to overcome his previous (understandable) AFL jitters, but they obviously think he is ready. I just hope they are not throwing him to the lions (lucky it isn't actually Brisbane) and he doesn't get eaten alive.

IMO The match commitee are probably trying to get Reid to make the tall forward position his own given that the club doesn't know when Rocca will be back(according to reports).
I'd expect him to play a fair few games in a row from now on if this is the case.

I think the Reid inclusion is pretty simple.
We needed a tall forward. Our next best tall forward is Reid.
Wood and/or Bryan can't be relied on as forward on a full time basis.

I'm delighted Reid's in the side... I've been hanging to see him get a consistent run in the seniors and I hope this is the start of it. I think he's capable of being one of our top-shelf players in a couple of years.
I also think Clokey is struggling without Rocca or Rusling there. If nothing else, Reid will lead hard, creating movement and another marking forward for Carlton defenders to worry about.

Yes, it really is that simple Jabso.
The level of football knowledge (or lack of) of some posters on here is staggering.
I ask them, how many games did players like
Roughead
Kennedy
Clarke (Bris)
Rider
Gumbleton
Hansen
Thorpe
all of who are about the same size and play in a similar position to Reid, play in their first 18 months.
Why do supports of Collingwood expect every one of our players to be an automatic superstar of the competition in their first game.
Those same supporters would have been the ones calling for the sacking of Swan and Davis after year 1

All I want from Reid is for him to keep his feet in marking contests, I don't want his man to constantly get an easy ball like in the North game cause he went to ground every time he didn't mark the ball.
I dont care if he doesn't kick a bag of goals or gets 20 touches, hopefully he has a solid game this Sunday

exactly , it takes a freak of a kid to be near the top elite level of afl within his first three or four years let alone be a consistent contributor, judd is probably the one that sticks out most to me of doing that.
key position players especially will definitely not do that, maybe their fourth year it might start to change but its very rare. i dunno what year buddy is in. but thats just an example of a player that is a freak aswell.
reid will come good, i was surprised when someone pointed out hes 14 days diffence in age to kreuezer, that pretty much puts it into perspective.

So maybe I was a bit harsh on Reid. I just remember sitting there in the North game expecting Reid to at least put up a contest only to see him fall over and watch his man run away with the ball. I hope he can prove me wrong tommorow, at the moment I am a bit worried about his size and finishing off skills, but as has been pointed out many times he is young and he will get better. If he puts in a good contest then I will reconsider my opinion on him.

to put it in perspective, a handful of first round picks from this most recent draft are actually older than Ben Reid, including Rhys Palmer. Add to that, talls take longer to develop and this all points to people having no clue.

Ive never said I dont rate Reid.
Just the fact they are rushing a young player into the team for the sake of it. He will be underdone in terms of game time this season and therefore you wouldnt think he wont be able to put his best foot forward.
The question RE Rocca is completely different. He is a senior player 200+ games, he knows what is expected. Reid is <10 games and therefore should be earning his spot with performances at VFL level. You can train all you like but as players would say there is nothing like match fitness and Reid cannot have this as he has only played 3 games in the last 8 weeks.
Im all for giving him a crack but if he comes out and struggles again due to lack of match fitness (ie the Kangas game) it will affect his confidence and if Mick just drops him straight away we are further behind in development terms.
My question to MM is why didn't he play last week??

14 Jun 2008, 13:52
I like the kid and my expectations are that he will be a good player in the future, so I'm not bagging him here i am referring to selection. I'm just a little concerned about his lead up form/prep to this game. It's true he does need chances i just didn't think this week was right. Trial and error is ok when your down the bottom rebuilding but we are after a top 4 spot ATM. It's true we may not have a 2nd tall forward ATM so a window has opened there, but our form has been fine without Rocca. Having said that (about selection), good luck to him personally and i really hope he cuts it up on Sunday.

Why not??? Well he is still very young, very dependent on taking uncontested marks, is a poor kick, has shown no real form this year, has a question mark over his fitness, was diabolically bad against North. Not the sort of player to take into big games I would have thought.
Nine times out of ten these sort of moves end in disaster. I sense a little panic in the camp.
