View Full Version : Eagles in 1998

I just watched the Eagles VS Bulldogs game fromt he WACA in 1998. That was the first game I ever went to.

It was interesting to watch now that I know everybody.

Some comments I have in retrospective...it is a good memory.

Woosha did not play until the 10 minute mark of the fourth quarter and imediately made a big impact. Was he already out of sorts with Mick by then? Cetainly doesn't make sense to leave your dual premiership captain on the bench for 3 1/2 quarters.

Paul Symmonds. What happened to him? He was quite a kick and was pretty mobile.

Cuz looked just as good then as he does now, but more mature and refined now as a player. Talent was still pretty raw and eager then.

Morrison. Started at full forward and kicked 4 goals, including one fron the goal line that might have landed in Gloucester PArk.

Gehrig. Why? enough said. He was awesome and without the right coach will NEVER meet his potential.

Mitchell White. First game back after knee Reco., kicked 1.5 or 6. Missed some 30 metre sitters at slight angles.

Chris Lewis. Shirtfront on West. Best I ever saw. Wirrapunda is classier than him - doesn't scrag as much, but just as exciting.

Guy McKenna. Most poised player I have ever seen.

Metro. Very handy across half back. Sorry that Freo have wasted his talent.

Fewster. Did nothing.

Gardiner. Was good in the ruck but didnt do much else.

The Team. I think Woosh should get this tape and show it to the boys this week. Even though we have played with a lot of passion and courage this year, this team doesn't come within shouting distance of that team for heart. They came back from a 52 - 4 quarter time deficit to lead by as much as 24 points and win by 13. I wish we could have passion transfusions, unfortunately passion is something you either have or you don't. It is a hard thing to teach.

Adrian Barich - Boundary Rider for Channel 7 had this conversation with Bruce McAvaney at halftime.

Bruce: Is there any Breeze down there Barra?

Barra: Yeah Mate but it ain't an eight goal breeze.

(at half time there were 16 goals all kicked at the Trinity College end of the WACA.)

Umpires. Gave some soft 50 metre penalties...IE one on Banfield as he kicked a goal just after a whistle for a Bulldogs free kick in the goal square. Crowd was so loud that the unmpuire couldn't even hear his whistle I bet.

In my short time as an Eagles' supporter this ranks as the top three games I have ever seen them play, behind Brisbane this year in round 5 and Essendon in round 4 in 1999. Bar the premierships which I am going to watch again tonight and tomorrow night.

Remember that game very clearly.

As for Paul Symonds, he changed WAFL clubs (West Perth to East Perth) in the late 90s or possibly 2000. I don't know if he's retired or on the injured list. Was one of the forgotten players of the West Coast Eagles.

You've got to be kidding. You're generalising from one great comeback. The team this year has played with a great deal of passion and courage on most occasions and Woosha has acknowledged that in his press conferences after the games. The difference is that the 1998 side was a much more experienced and a fair bit better team.

Just to continue...Fido did not play.

Peter Matera. Scintillating. Smothered one kick fully, and a hand pass.

Jakovich. Did his ankle with about 3 minutes left in the game. Had problems for most of the year after that.

Tony Evans. Played well but was injured early.

Waterman. Powerful across half back. Shame he is with the Shockers now.

Milli. Steadiest ship in the storm.

Phil Read. Beaten badly in the first quarter. Spoken to quietly by MM at quarter time, with smoke coming our of Mick's Ears, and was good the rest of the way. This was Read's 8th game. Might have been a turning point in his career.

Jason Ball. Not as good as Gardiner even then.

Braun. Reminded me of why we got him. Silky-ish skills, and good pace.

Kemp. Kemp. What can you say other than Kemp? He was great.

I think that covers the 22.

This game was the start of a six game winning streak. Broken by Melbourne after Farmer kicked 7 goals. Round 19 I think. That Dees game was the second game I ever went to.

Paul Symmonds. What happened to him?

Still playing for East Perth............I would have kept him on the list for another season or so.

So would I.

Bloody harsh delisting the bloke on 99 AFL games when it wasn't as if he'd had a bad season.

That was a great game. I remember after being belted by 8 goals in the first quarter, I was pretty p*ssed off. I thought they had blown it and proved me wrong when they got back and won the game.

I would put this game along with the 1990 game against the Saints. I was sitting at the game when I saw Ugle dragged after 6 goals were kicked against him, only to see him down in the forward line and kick 6 goals to win the game for us.

Touché.

Seriously, anyone happen to know his middle name - too much coincidence and general 'insiderness' for mine.

Ill bet you Sabre's intellect against Frodo's charm - who wants a bet?

You're on.
Worsfold would have Braun's guts for garters if he found out one of his midfielders was messing about on BF prior to our most important game of the season. Hmmm, unless Brauny already knows he's been dropped this week?? I'm going to be keeping a close eye on the ins and outs tomorrow.

What does reading and posting on a website, have to do with playing a game of football - I've thought it for awhile about ole MDB, but the post of remembering who got 3 brownlows that game, sealed the deal.

I expect to see Frodo's charm very soon.

You do?? Just as soon as you deliver me MDB's tousled blonde head on a platter, this bet will have been resolved in your favor, and I'll consider paying up.

Actually when Frodo sees this thread, you might see an example of his charm...

Pssssssst - between you and me, that was what I was referring to.

Anyway, one of you fanboys(or girls) will know his middle name, cough it up.

Or MDB, last time someone made a slight comment of you being Brauny, you disappeared, care to contribute?

For the truly curious...MDB's thoughts on Michael Braun: here (http://www.bigfooty.com/forum/search.php?s=&action=showresults&searchid=29959&sortby=lastpost&sortorder=descending) (Good to see he has only voted for "himself" on the odd occasion in BFWCPOTY ;))

But frankly I think this is best kept quiet. What's the point of having "MDB" around if he can't do his work of keeping us informed in peace and anonymity? :)

TheRealBuzz
28 Aug 2002, 13:56
I might be wrong, but I'm pretty sure Brauny's middle name is David.

MDB, let it be known that I have stuck up for you through all the trade threads. ;)

kuepper
28 Aug 2002, 13:58
Well if I am right (and lets face it, when am I wrong?), this must go down as one of the quotes of the year, by Brauny himself:

Braun deserved BOG because not only did he get the ball himself, but he stopped a very dangerous player in Harvey (who is in the top 10 of the AFL for disposals) from getting anywhere near the ball.

The best players aren't only those who can amass 30+ possessions - those who stop damaging players are just as important - and that was Brauns role today.....he played a fantastic game.

Well I am sure you are not one to blow your own trumpet, but toot-fking-toot!

I don't know what you're talking about, Rod.

Can I help it if I think Brauny is quite possibly the hardest, toughest, highly skilled footballer that I've ever seen?

P.S. I think this is just the tip of the iceberg.
Blocker = Leigh Brown.

You can keep on thinking Im Michael Braun if you like......

Just because I take an interest in Brauny doesn't mean that I am him!! Gee, the amount of people that write about Ben and you dont all go accusing them of being the guy himself!!!!

Come on guys, do you really think that an AFL player would waste their time on the internet??? 90% of them wouldn't even know how to use a computer.

So just to set the record straight - no, Im not Brauny, but yes, I do consider him to be a tough hard player whom I rate rather highly.

True, but how many can recite his brownlow votes per game? And how many use his initials to post?

No doubt on the latter, but this reeks of a poor coverup - what else do you have to do between training Brauny? Occassional ad, hairdressing appointment, and maybe the odd visit to the solarium, aint like it is hard to find some spare time.

Why hello there, long time no speak (still using that ladder too, you'll be glad to know) - in short, I aint.

She feels the need to chime in threads such as this (go back 20 or so posts while Mr Braun, Mr Barich, Mr Brown and myself were having some nice banter, and she then felt the need to have a crack at me about trolling, so for the want of anything better to do, I had some fun :)

Just for the record, age, sex and location makes little difference to me, from the old, crusty and bitter ones from WA (who know who they are) all the way through to the cheerleader types from our most southern states, if required I'll do my duty and educate them ;)

The sad part is that I stop on by, to find 15 posts discussing it.

Shame on you all - especially you Carly, surely one of your heads must have something better to talk about.
