From what I've read this guy suits our needs perfectly. A silky skilled mid is exactly what our team needs at the moment.

It has been mentioned in other threads and by the sounds of it, he is
pretty damn quick. That is what we need most in our midfield, speed.

Is that his real name? Poor kid. Would of been tough times at primary school:D
Is he like a trav johnstone type player? It'd be good if we could pick up a skilled power runner like a foley or kerr.

I like Sidebottom, and if he was there for our pick i would definately pick him.
The other player i like is King from WA purely beacuse of the pace and running ability. Two things that we lack at the moment. When this guy does his draft testing i think he will shoot up draft boards. (please see below stolen profile)
Kieran King Midfielder 181cm
East Fremantle 05/03/1991 80kg
King is an Australian junior running champion but proved in the 2007 NAB AFL Under-16 Championships that he is also a talented footballer. He averaged 19 disposals in the three games playing across half forward using his pace to full effect by ending the carnival with the second most running bounces of any division one player (13). He was able to do so because only 26% of his possessions were won in a contest, and he posed a threat pushing forward with an average of five inside 50s and two goals per game.

looks like if brisbane want to get a decent midfielder this draft they will have to tank for it
because apparantly this years draft is a very good one
or maybe a mid that really suits brisbane could slide to brisbanes pick

:confused::confused::confused:
I would've thought that with a good draft you're a better chance of getting good players further down, hence not needing to tank.
In any case, tanking talk is nonsense - we're looking finals-bound.

And because the draft is so strong there is a good chance someone like sidebottom will be around with our 1st pick which should be 9ish depending on how we go.

Ah, I see we're coming into draft mode where every midfielder is "silky smooth" or has "great disposal" or is a "pure athlete". Hey Bunno is a "hard-at-it" type with "a big tank".
Carry on.

You just need to know how to read them, TFB.
"runs all day" - he's always chasing after better footballers
"great athlete" - has no right foot or left foot and thinks the handball is a lunchtime primary school sport.
"latecomer to the sport" - Mum and Dad wouldn't let him play competitive sport until he was 25
"silky skills" - the only contest he will go near is So You Think You Can Dance
It is all in the translation.

You forgot...
- The TAC Cup coach declaring that "Player X is the best prospect we've seen come through our system since Player Y".
- 'Was rated as a potential top 5 pick until he injured his pinky toe earlier in the season'

Dont forget my personal fav:-
We had him rated as a second round pick, and it was a toss up between him and (insert palyer chosen in round 2), we were wrapped that he was still there in round 4.

He's a true footballer = makes up for a lack of speed with a lack of size.
A superb athlete = can't kick or handball.

Had the flu at draft camp, which affected his results.

But for an injury last year would have been a top 5 pick, we were lucky to get him at pick X. (see Mitch Clarke)

Clean below his knees = can't mark the ball
Good inside player = no pace and no skills

Polkinghorne and Sidebottom - just love those names - would only need a Bassingthwaite and a Fetherstonehaugh to have a fabulously named foursome

I doubt he will be drafted. Cannot nail a regular game for the Bushies.
The pick of the Bushies are Jack Ziebell and Steele Sidebottom.

But the name! The name!!!
With a name like "Dash Barolli", I'd imagine it's either a tuxedo or smoking jacket and a cigar or pipe that's slowing him down.

There is a lot of heat on Ziebell but I am firmly on the Sidebottom wagon. Widely described as a clearance specialist and also claimed by many to be the best kick in the draft. Isn't lacking pace either. Sounds the perfect fit for our current needs. Hope we get him.

By the sounds of it there will be a few mids, who we would look at.
Not just the kids from the draft either. Didak and Cousins on the radar for some clubs too maybe. Provided collingwood want to trade Didak of course. Exciting times ahead i think.
Just on Sidebottom, how tall, weight?

Another point of interest is that both Ziebell and Sidebottom are Vic Country boys, which is historically a recruiting zone that our club likes to tap into. (Notting, Adcock, Tyler, Henderson, Austin, Lappin, Brown, Bradshaw etc).
I know we always have a "best available" policy for the first round, but I am confident that we'll be able to satisfy both that requirement and the dire need for a quality mid with our first pick this year.

best available is usually the best way to go with drafts...however we definitely need to make it best available midfielder this year for picks 1 and 2.

No. More like Ash McGrath.
Lukey at various times has been listed anywhere between 177 to 179cm

Since watching the National Champs I have been thinking Sidebottom is the perfect fit for the lions. According to a few first round mock drafts he should be available around our first pick. Although if Collingwood finish below us and Sidebottom is available dont expect him to still be there for the picking. Just my thoughts/predictions. Guess we will have to wait and see never know what could happen.

Leigh was quoted as saying "We've clearly invested in height in the draft. Now, in the medium-term, we've got to invest in the midfielder position which occupies two-thirds of your team" so I think it's fair to start talking about Jack Ziebell and Steele Sidebottome as potential draftees. I've never been great at knowing what's happening at U/18 level but it looks like Steele would be an ideal draftee looking at these reviews.

Same here:)
Especially with the imminent retirement of Lappin we will need a replacement. Although, Dalziell has done quite well for himself lately.
No question we need at least one class injection into our midfield over the next couple of drafts. But it is also interesting that our two best performed midfielders over the last month (Riska and Dazzle) have been very low draft picks. While you do increase your chances of picking up an elite mid by using a top range draft pick, it is also easier to pick a smokey midfielder from late in the draft.

I agree, but like backing outsiders you can only get lucky so many times. It's time to use our top picks on mids.

It sounds like we might not take any key position players at all.

I agree. It will be interesting in 5 years time to see if our strategy of getting classy talls in 2005-06-07 pays off. But there is no question that we need to use this year and next year to load up on a couple of quality midfield prospects. That ought to see a range of our first round picks all maturing at roughly the same time.

I certainly hope it does pay off. It'll be a nice slap in the face for all those critics who think Lethal can't rebuild a team. Oh, and I want another chance to (hopefully) beat Collingwood in a GF.:D

I reckon Ziebell will go around pick 6, and I think we will have a pick around the 8 mark. Pick 8-9 should be about spot on for Sidebottom I reckon.

Sidebottom, Robinson, Ziebell - one of them for our first pick
O'keefe, Blease, Swift - one of them for our second pick
(with other teams picking tall timber, we may get a slider in Jetta or Deboer for our second pick. As long as we avoid best available  crap for the first two rounds)

:D best available have netted a ruckman and a KPP in the last 2 drafts. both are top-tier but its time to get a Mid.

I know a lot can be based on so called potential but it is still worth noting that when this season commenced Champion Data had rated the depth of our midfield to be the greatest in the AFL.
I still think we have a very well balanced squad, sure some might suggest a current snapshot with the inclusions of a Joel Selwood and a Cyril Rioli would be the difference between having a position, say 4th, and fighting for a finals berth this year. Who really knows?
Long term, again who knows but looking forward and not backwards, I do agree with you POBT, the timing of “the maturing” of Clark, Henderson Clouston Garner and Leuey with a possible first round 2008 drafted midfielder might just occur around the same time. :)
