View Full Version : Decoys & Taggers: Time for people to learn these roles

The Hawthorn side is winning a lot of games not just because Buddy is kicking a lot of goals. There are many other roles in the side and a couple of them aren't that pretty.

Decoy: The role of this player is to take his player away from the action to free up space for Buddy. He might go through the match not getting a lot of the ball, but he's probably done exactly what the coach has asked of him and our side has got another win on the board.

Tagger: The role of this player is to stop an opposition player. Usually they get to tag a superstar player. They might go through the game and not get many kicks themselves, but if the player they're tagging has had little of the ball or been under constant pressure and ineffective with delivery then they've done their job.

Before you go slagging off a player ask yourself whether he did what was asked of him by the coach. Not every player can kick a bag of goals, get a load of possessions or take a dozen marks a game. They've all got roles to play.

So, why don't some of you yellow-bellied slag merchants go and learn something about the game.

Obviously you are talking about Boyle. Yeah....sure we all know he is supposed to act as a Decoy, but that does not mean he is supposed to act as a manequin.

Since coming back from injury his attack on the ball has been slow and pathetic (when it is near him and SHOULD go for it.)

Worse than that, his defensive pressure has been non existant. No point freeing space for buddy if the opposition has the ball.

Obviously Tim Clarke.....Alot of people who are saying that Clarke should be dropped are only saying so because they would like to see our more experienced players back - I.E Guerra, Crawf and Sewell.

It really is silly to suggest that anyone who calls for these players to be dropped knows nothing about football.

Geez Wally you'll get banned for saying that.

So, you want people to actually understand what's going on in a match?
You mean the coach actually has a plan, players play a role, there are tactics in place and that is the reason we are doing well?

Right...

I think its much easier to just slag off at any scapegoat whom I can blame for anything that I think is wrong at any time during the game.
I just keep calling out "Man up, man up" and "Kick it, kick it" - that usually does the job!

If Clarke was such a vital tagger he would have been playing ahead of Tuck, and McGlynn, but he doesnt. The time is running out for him.

Didn't say people couldn't comment on these two players being dropped. Go for life and say Boyle and Clarke should be dropped as often as you like. Whatever makes you happy. ;)

This is more aimed for the gherkins who just have their football brain based around stats for each game and totally abuse and slag off anyone who doesn't rack up a load of stats.

(Personally i think Boyle is on thin ice, but deserves one more game... maybe.)
