View Full Version : Melbourne Changes VS Sydney
Manuka oval, smaller ground which may or may not help us. The swans play the SCG very well, but we tend to have more success there aginst them than at the G or Dome.
We are in desperate need for a tall target, Juice played on the weekend, kicked 4, with Sautner ready to return there is no point having Juice fight for a spot that he ain't going to get. Straight into the 1's. Showed enough promise last year to get us all excited that we may have a good player. Valenti was named in Sandy's best, time to get him back on the park.
Bode, not good enough. Had 2 chances to show something, anything, and despite having a task that few can complete (Nathan Brown=gun) his time is up. Same goes for Yze. Played for himself against the Tigers, selfish when he got it forward 50, didn't run hard enough when they had it. Not against a farewell game for him, he's been a great player for us, but all he is doing now is stifling the development of someone else (Maric anyone?)
Some people talking Morton should be dropped? I don't think so. Had a few average games, missing targets, but expecatations are placed way too high for top draft picks, we need to give him some slack. Heard a Dees supporter behind me slag him as he was coming off the ground yesterday. Not on, and I hope that he comes out and dominates just to shove it in that muppets face.

didnt newton kick 4 goals in the Sandy reserves? That doesn't warrant automatic selection to the dees, its not that hard to get a game in the vfl 2's

Morton out for me, a step back to VFL doesn't mean a step backwards in his development, his kicking effieciency has been terrible and against the swans I don't want to play him. Valenti takes his place, he is perfect for a tough game against the swans. I'm happy to persist with Bode, his game on the weekend was much better than against the pies, however I can't fit CJ in the side because I want Bell in ahead of him to give us more defensively (and to get McDonald in the midfield). We need a target up forward so whilst I reckon it is about a 5% chance of happening, I'm going to pick Juice and hope it happens, Yze can make way.

Dunn to Goodes, Warnock to Hall, Garland to Mickey O, Frawley on Playfair. McLean, Jones, McDonald and Valenti going through the midfield to try and break even in clearances against a strong Sydney midfield.

I think we need to be tough with Bell. He was in the best for Sandy, but lets give him another week or 2 to really get some momentum and form. Otherwise it feels as though it will be a token demotion.
I didn't think CJ was that bad. My brother is a Richmond supporter, and we both had microscopes out yesterday on 2 players respectively (Bode and CJ, his were JON and Hyde) I was prepared to give CJ a quarter without any criticism, then put the torch to him, but playing on a wing I liked his game. All may not be lost, and I'm gunning for him to keep his spot now. Bode did nothing yesterday which made me thankful that he is getting a game. Petterd, Bell, Whelan would all perform the job he gets twice as well.

He's not stifling the development of Maric, even if Yze wasn't there Maric wouldn't be playing. As stated thousands upon thousands of times on this board, Maric wants to focus on his schooling.
If he gets a game at all, it will be rounds 21 and 22 if anything.

I've been a fan of Yze since he burst on to the scene in 1995 but i think it's time he and the club call time on his career

Manuka Oval has exactly the same dimensions as the MCG. Even the scoreboard is old wooden one moved from the MCG. It brings back memories.

Bode out for Bell
Valenti in for Yze
I'm still unsure about Morton, if he trains well during the week, he can make the trip to Canberra.

I reckon Valenti should defienitly come in, He was played as a small forward for about a quarter and a half on the weekend because he was getting heavily tagged in the midfield, and he did very well.
He reads the play very well and he has such clean hands, He also took a couple of strong marks(wich is very impressive considering his height)
He had around 22 disposials, and kicked 2 goals on the weekend.:thumbsu:
Bell got a fair bit of the ball but he turned it over to much, So i think he should have another week at Sandy..

Out: Morton, Bode
Don't care about Newton not earning his spot, if he doesn't do enough to keep it then drop him, but we need another tall in the forward line and he's our best option for the future.
As for Valenti, consistently performing well in the ressies, and deserves his spot. Has a better future then Bode.
Morton rested, not dropped to the ressies. Give him a couple of weeks off to refresh. Need to manage young kids more and not burn them out.

Agreed, but wouldn't be to disappointed if morton was kept in the side. Considering it is a Sunday game Melbourne will name 3 additional players to the bench, Valenti Wheelan and????

Whats wrong with Yze?
Form. He was good against Collingwood, was a junk time king against the Saints and was poor against Richmond.
Sad to hear Newton won't be playing for another month, did Mahoney give a reason? Fitness I'm assuming?
Out: Morton (Needs to have a rest, he got 20 touches last week but hid the target with about half) and Bode (I don't see a role for him in the team)
In: Valenti (Will suit us against the way the Swans play) and Whelan (Shit we need him back)

Agree on giving morton a rest
Why dont we bring up Cheney for a game got in the best for sandy - couldnt hurt for him to know where he is at and can improve on for 09.
Bell is having a terrible season - trade bait?
Need to get dunny out of the middle - too slow (decision making and running) settle him down inthe forward line!

Howdy all - cant post this as a new thread - but thought it of interest - we look as though we are going to have 2 home games in Canberra next year.
http://www.foxsports.com.au/story/0,8659,23882328-23211,00.html
Also - reckon its time to blood as many new players so we can assess them and clean out or keep as their performances warrant.
We need big changes - and it might cost a bit to do it - i.e. promote some more rookies, but at least we dont sit at the end of the season having to decide the future of a player and say 'i wish we saw him play at the highest level' or instead 'we better keep this guy on our list because we havent seen him yet'. We need only those players who have a future on our list in 09.

He's playing for his career, but that is making him even more selfish then before (and that's pretty damn hard thing to do and i didn't think possible).
People say he was good against collingwood, but i dont think he was great. Probably good enough to keep his spot, but he was so unbelievably selfish i would've happily seen him dropped.
In the last quarter against collingwood when we were still half a chance, he had 2 shots at goal from the boundary from outside 40m. Both missed. The first one i think Morton was 20m in the clear about 15m out straight in front, Yze blazed away, Morton stood there for another 10 seconds with his hands in the air to make sure Yze knew he was there. Second shot, further out still on boundary, could've centred to Slyvia who was 30m out, again straight in front. Yze blazed, missed. Slyvia let him know.
Kick those 2 and the margin sits at about 2 goals. You can't have a player of his experience who needs to be told he's done the wrong thing by the youngest bloke in the team
Yze is playing for himself instead of the team, which is funny because he would survive longer if he did the team things. After an alright game, junk time goals against the saints and poor on the weekend, time to go. He's been a great servant of MFC, give him a farewell game, then pick a player who'll puts the teams interests ahead of their own.
Fair answers, I havnt watched enough of the Dees this year to judge Yze, I thought he was a walk up start, however, what I did see was the game against the pies!
For your sake, hope your mob dont come out with your 'kill em all' attitude, we are not as soft as the pies, I dont think that will help you against us, however, the 'no fear' mindset you guys seemed to have was impressive, hope its a good game, good luck!

Was almost finished a long-winded spiel about how good you blokes are, and how Collingwood are a pretty average unit, victim of its own hype, blah blah blah when my computer stuffed up and I lost it all so I'll get to the point quick.
Swans half-backs are arguably the best in the comp- Kennelly, Malceski, Matner. Tambling ripped Wona apart last week running off him so I'm a bit scared about what these blokes will do. Swans are a well-drilled team, 2nd probably only to Geelong, probably one or 2 game breakers short of me being prepared to drop some cash on them. Hopefully as in some recent games we can get close, maybe even surprise you with a win.
C-mon Dees, I don't care if I'm not going to be there, I just want a win!!

I was thinking the same thing, Dunny was bloody good in his chase and tackle of Nathan Foley.
Need to give him a license to roam about, stick him on the Half Forward Line or just let him roam from the wings.

Goodes always turns on the style against us so a kneecapping is in order, but at least Godders isn't around so he can't whack him...and get away with it. I reckon play Dunn on him, like the idea of him being a tagger and has a good body shape/aerobic capacity to stay with him

When you tend to look at Simon Godfrey, you look at a punching bag no matter light you see him in, so to an extent I don't blame him for flattening him...Mind you, he appears the only player to have played the game where both players, officials and spectators wanted to dropkick.
But I still loved him

What is young Valenti not doing right to get a game? Did he sh!t in Bails breakfast bowl or something.
Valenti very stiff IMO.
Do you think Bailey has looked at recent performances against Sydney and realised that White never gets anywhere near Jolly. Tears him apart every year. Thinking it might be a 3 way rotation through the ruck, to forward, to bench, unless he is think big PJ on Barry Hall, to which I shudder.
Anyone know the forecast for Canberra Sunday? You would imagine that we won't play 3 ruckmen if its raining.
WHAT THE HELL!?!?!?
We can't play 3 ruckmen, it simply does not work we have tried this time and time again.
I wouldn't mind this if perhaps White goes forward and stays there for a majority of the game.
Still why the hell is Valenti not getting a game? It's bordering on ridiculous.

He may well have... but regardless he wasn't that spectacular for Sandy last week. He was basically a poor man's Colin Sylvia, took one very good grab up forward but he did not demand a place in our side.

CD my good mate, I pray you are wrong.
On another note, I must be the only one who is happy to see Bode get a few games up forward. He impressed last year in a few games by running the lines and finishing with goals. I know his background is defence but we have other defenders way ahead of him. Before we ignore his last call for clemency and strap him up and put a few thousand volts through him I'm glad he is being given another chance to impress in a different role - I expect that he will do allright.
