In light of the proposed draft and trading concessions to get the GC off the ground, should we be extending our contract lengths? I suppose the problem will be we will need to contract the boys all the way till 2012, when the Western Sydney team is supposedly coming in. Is it worth the risk of extended contracts to ensure none can get snapped up for free by the GC team?
I think for particular high-risk players we should consider extending their contracts beyond the concessions. For example, local players, like Ryan Davis, should be signing a contract before the Western Sydney team comes in at least. Guys that may be targeted and are vulnerable, like Seabs, should definitely have contracts beyond this time. Guys that just won't leave, like Cox, we shouldn't bother with. Kerr could also be a bit risky as they could offer someone like him a lot more than we could.
Do we have any NSW or Qld players otherwise? I don't think we did, but I may be off the mark. Who are our other risky players?

Good thread.
I've mentioned a couple of times if we are looking to possibly trade players like say Seaby we need to get their contract extended to 2010. This is to ensure they can't walk out and we get nothing in return from the GC.
Problem is who do we extend contracts to?
Our key players obviously.:thumbsu:
Our promising youngsters:thumbsu:
And due to the PSD and GC and West Sydney concessions anyone we may want to trade with a perceived trade value:cool:.
Gee, that doesn't leave much flexibility in our list management at all.
I'd suggest older players say 28 and over will be ignored by the GC and West Sydney, they would have learned from Freo is my bet.;)
Players like Seaby, Kennedy, Staker, Hansen, McKinely, Rosa all fit into the types they will be chasing IMO.

Too true Obeanie1, it is difficult because even players we think will not be interested in a move may be if the $$ are right. That will be one of the main risks, players leaving chasing front loaded contracts. I think as we move further down the list though, there is a greater risk in signing these players for too long than there is in losing them to the GC franchise.
I wonder what the club will be doing about this. Obviously, this year will not be the one to act. When should they? During the year before the GC is in? More than a year before they are in?
It is 2011 they are coming in, right. So, they will be in the 2010 draft? Shall we be signing them during 2010 (for 2 years to cover GC and 3 to cover NSW) or during 2009 (for 3-4 years)? I think it will be during the 2010 season, with the really risky boys being signed before (your promising NSW and Qld boys).

Staker and Davis are the only 2 NSW/ACT boys.
We dont have any QLD boys.
So most of our team are from Melb, SA and Perth.
Davis will be a target for the West Syd team I have no Doubt.
IN 2012 Davis will be:
23yrs old, 189cm, 89kg (give or take) Inside midfielder or Defender with 5 years experiance at AFL level and would have played with and against the elite players in the comp!
Possible Captain Material for new Franchise.
Could have Midfield Built around him.
Would be helpful with players transfering in from out of state as he has had the Experiance.
Lots of possitives for the new Franchise to weigh up, Thats why I think he will be a big target.
Staker: 28yrs old, Experianced KPP that could play both ends, Leadership ability, played in big games eg Finals, Derbies etc
196cm, 96kgs Could be handy till a Rookie steps up and could be helpful with Transfering Players as he did it.
Dont think you would build a Forward line around him, but he could fill holes created by injuries and inexperiance.
Anthony Stubbs WCE (SSP): 192cm, 82kg KPP
So if I was building a team around RETURNING HOME Players then Ryan Davis would definately be a target, and Brent Staker if he didnt cost too much might be an option.
Other NSW/ACT boys that might be tempted to go Home.
Dylan Adison- (W/B): 186cm, 83kg mid
Daniel Cross-WB): 187cm, 86kg, Def/Mid
Malcom Lynch- (WB): 178cm, 68kg, Sf/Mid
Taylor Walker- (Adle): 191cm, 86kg, KPP
Tony Armstrong-(Adel): 183cm, 72kgs Smf/Mid
Mark McVeigh- Ess: Will be 31 in 2012
Lenney Hayes- STK: Will be 32 in 2012
Justin Koschitzke- Stk: Will be 30 in 2012
Adam Schnider- Stk: will be 28 in 2012
Khan Haretuku-Stk (SSP): 198cm 98kg Ruck
Trent Stubbs- Melb (SSP): Brother of Anthony Stubbs WCE also a scholarship holder.
Some Under 18 Carnival players who might get Drafted.
Ranga Edwickarama SSP Cats: Mid- 178, 79
Scott Reed Coll SSP: KPP- 193, 80
Kade Klemke : HBP- 180, 78
Josh Bryse: BP/Mid- 186, 82
Dylan Mcneil: Mid- 178, 77
Max Wilson: Ruck- 197, 105
Luke Bruest: Mid- 184, 74
Jordan Foster: KPP- 190, 85
Xavier McMahon: Mid- 188, 85
Brodie A"Vard: Ruck- 198, 90

... this is ludicrous, the program is after all an AFL funded marketing exercise ... they should be yelling from the roof tops to get the attention of the target Sydney market and teenage athletes ... yet it is almost being kept a secret by most clubs!

i think we should sign as many as our young players + our stars beyond 2012 for sure no arguments about it.
