I think people are seriously jumping the gun when it comes to this bloke. He didn't have a full pre season and is still carrying an injury. When Masten is playing well (like on friday night) he seems to be taken off or left in the forward line. Wait till he has a full pre season under him. So far this year his average stats are:

15.1 disposals ( 4.7 contested)
4.3 marks
4.5 tackles
2.2 inside 50s
2.1 redbound 50s
1.4 clearnces
70% game time

Compare this to the 4 best midfielders of this season in their first year

Gary ablett Adam cooney Simon Black scott thompson
8.3 disposals 11.8 disposals 12.2 disposals 8.7 disposals
1.1 marks 2.3 marks 3.1 marks 2.1 marks
2.1 tackles 1.6 tackles 1.2 tackles 0.9 tackles

its pretty silly comparing stats with players in different years.

not sure why people would be at all concerned with the way masten is going, getting the amount of games he has been in his first season is an accomplishment in its own and he's shown that he can have an impact at the highest level.

like you said, wait til he has a full preseason and gets a lot bigger before we judge how good/bad he's going to be.

As usual, stats mean 2/3 of ____ all on their own.

Does Masten burst through packs at full tilt and kick goals like Cooney? Does he have the same freakish balance and vision of Ablett?

If you have to compare his first year stats to another first year player, then compare him to Simon Black, or maybe James Bartel, who are similar types. Even then, the stats don't take into consideration the era they debuted in or the respective teammates they had.

Same goes for Masten vs Palmer comparisons. Palmer's going well, good on him, and is getting more of the ball than Masten. He's also laying half as many tackles. The two play different roles, and for mine Palmer is playing his better to this point in time. I reckon Masten will be alright, but the notion of wanting to call that he will be a superstar or a dud based on 9 games is ridiculous.

people should just give the guy a chance.
he is a skinny little feller who needs a few presons
he WILL be loyal to our club and possibly a future captain

comparing touches isn't the greatest example because in today's game there are a lot more possessions around the ground. i think there are 700 a game now, as opposed to about 620 10 years ago... and im pretty sure this figure shot up very quickly around about 2005-2006.

but Masten is going along just fine... he's a young skinny kid who's gonna take a year or two to develop fully but for the time being he's not doing anything wrong and given most consider him already in our strongest 22 thats a great achievement for a first year player.

That's basically what the thread is about.... and I have no doubt in predicting he'll be our next captain.

i do. not our "next" captain.
there are others who deserve to be in line before him.

For mine, Cox sooner then later.. and Waters, if he can actually play 22 games without getting suspended for half of them he could be a contender in a year or three.

Ebert is very good too.

A 18 yo kid comes in and shows probably the cleaniest hands + extracting skills since some bald prick and he cant escape criticism?

On another note, he seems to be developing some nice guns. He may not have the power through his hips/abdomen/thighs, but his guns are coming along nicely.:D

16 Jun 2008, 21:04
I compare him to a harder, more inside version of Butler

I don't expect anything from the 2007 mob for another 3 years, 3 of them are inside mids and I don't remember many that had a serious impact until they were 22+

Got to be patient with them, goes for pretty much every draftee

who would have thought Bartel would win a Brownlow before Hodge/Ablett/Ball/Dal Santo ?

Or that Ablett would ascend to superstar status ?

Most would have called Hodge/Ablett/Bartel good solid players in the first 3 years but nothing that special - now look at them after 7 years and they are 3 of the dominant players in the game.

got to be patient

Most of his disposals are kicks as well. Something we need in a midfielder, penetrating kicks at that.
He will be good for us indeed. Chuck on 5-7kg of muscle and 20-30games experience and we have a serious midfielder:thumbsu:. We didn't pick him up at no.3 for nothing.;)

Its funny with his kicks.

In Games, i've noticed he's getting an equal amount of 'Shocking kick''s as he is 'Now thats a beautiful kick'...

Some of his kicks are quite the charmers.

I heard he wanted number 9, Cuz was his boyhood idol etc but the club didn't want to put that pressure on him. Hope he gets whatever number he wants. Would love to see the '9' running around again though...

Give him a full pre season, then lets see what he can do!
A full pre season to a footy player is like viagra to a 70 year old! Without it, they're performance on the field/in bed is going to suffer, refer to Daniel Kerr and his torn hammy six weeks out!

Oh yeh, lots of red meat and some long weight sessions over summer wont hurt the kid either! ;):thumbsu:

The club would never retire the number 9 based on a player disrespecting the club - numbers are retired out of respect for a player.

We need to give it to masten because he is the future and we have moved on (if he wants it that is)

Someone mentioned on another thread in BF forums that they have a jumper with 13 on it and they got Masten to sign the jumper and asked him if he would ever change and he said and i quote "No way, its my lucky number"

I honestly believe Cuzzy did more good for the club than he did bad...there are so many afl players like him he was just stupid enough to get caught. He is a champion of the West Coast Eagles and any young player should consider it an honour to wear his number.

His working hard atm abit of a tradey, seems to be doing okay.
