Whilst I'm glad he's going on, I would prefer him to take the 2nd or 3rd tall defender roll or play up forward. We are setting ourselves up for a big fall in defence if we don't start blooding the younger players there. Let Glass or someone else take FB and only Milli as a replacement if things go bad.

i don't know about this one.

great player and a hard man to replace in our line up but i don't know about his knee. i would rather him retire on a high than do his knee in round 5 of next year and never play again. of late alot of our champs (kemp, bluey, waterman) have left the game on a low.

I agree Visro...use him sparingly. Good point

I agree Visro...use him sparingly. Good point Same - have him play on 3rd best defender and let Glass or Lynch or Gaspar play on the FF. If it gets to a crunch situation, McIntosh can be moved onto the FF. Have him as back up while a younger player learns the ropes.

He has been handy when pushed forward in the past, reminds me of Silvagni.

I'd like to see him used sparingly at full back with the young guy who the Eagles want to develop as the next full back, Gaspar?

My very thoughts.

And he will only cost us half his wages to the salary cap as a vet.

I disagree with this.

Why put your third or fourth best tall on say Lloyd when you can use Milli?? It would be stupid of us to do that. Glass may learn by having 8 goals kicked on him by Lloyd but it aint doing WC any great favours in the game.

A lot of you are Wilson fans and want him as our number one FF next season? According to your logic we should delist Wilson at years end to let McDougall and Lynch play FF??

If McIntosh is our best full back, which obviously he is, then he should get the best forward in the opposition's team. Its like playing Cousins off the bench cos we wanna give Judd some more experience???

Im very happy that Milli is coming back and i expect him to get the best forward week in and week out next year.

I have to agree with you here Jod. If we plan on making a serious attempt at the finals next year, we will need our best players in the key position roles and I don't think anyone is good enough to take that role from Milli.

I am glad he is playing on, though I stated here last week that this was to be his last year and I am glad I am wrong. He is still one of the best full backs in the AFL. Jason Dunstall and Tony Lockett tend to agree.

You make a very good point Jod.

I think it's all down to time frames. If we want a real crack at finals footy next year then you're right in that Milli is our best FB.

IMO we wont be ready for a real crack until 2004/5 and by then Milli will sureley be retired. If we don't have a decent full back in place to replace him by then it could cost us dearly. That is why I feel we need to prepare the way next season for a real crack in the following season.

ps I don't think Lynch is a FF and McDougall is unproven so BB seems our best option, and his body hasn't had Milli's problems

So does Alistair Lynch

The reason McIntosh may have to be used on the 2nd or 3rd defender is because in 2-3 years time, he's not gonna be there anymore. Realistically the side is looking at making its charge into the finals around that time, and if we dont have a player(s) with experience in the FB and CHB positions then we're gonna have major problems.

The forward line is a bit different as Wilson hasnt endured 10 years AFL and his body seems a lot better able to handle say 3-4 years than either McIntosh and Jakovich.

We're agreed that the midfield will only become better with time; the forward line with McDougall, Wilson, Fido and co is competent; next season is the time to start looking towards creating a long term defence

I agree with you Frodes that once Milli retires it will be tough to find a ready made replacement but thats the circle of footy life. Kemp retired, Kerr arrived. Matera on his way out, Judd arrives. McKenna retires, Hunter bobs up as a possible half back flanker.

We will find someone but until we do we must continue to play our best FB on the opposition's best forward. I read somewhere this year that Milli hasnt had anyone kick more than 4 goals on him all year. He is still very good and still amongst the best FB's in the competition.
