View Full Version : Ben Cousins - 12 days to go

Ben Cousins has until the 30th of June to nominate for a WAFL or VFL side (cant see him nominating in any other state) if he wishes to be playing AFL in 2009.

In tradition of the Cousins epic I assume he will leave it to the last minute to keep us all guessing.

It is a 99.9% possibility he will be at one of the following Melbourne clubs for 2009 who will be having a crack at the flag;

Hawthorn
Geelong (where his father played)
Collingwood (under his first AFL coach Mick Malthouse)
Western Bulldogs
or even (hold your breath) Carlton (he would make them a top 4 side)

Does anyone have any news on where he might be headed in 2008 and 2009?

Can't see him playing at Hawthorn next year. He just wouldn't get to us under the draft rules.

I know they always say Collingwood are always a top chance of recruiting any star player, which is somewhat incorrect, I think Cousins is a realistic chance of playing for the Pies if he decides to play next year...Some of the younger guys are really lifting to fill older players' shoes, and it is a breath of fresh air for some of the older players and thus could be a good environment for Cousy...(Burns, Lockyer, etc) They have the money too which talks alot of languages...

If we could get him for next to nothing, and on a low salary than I wouldn't mind taking him. If he's that bad of a influence on the youngsters we could always give him the ass.

That is not correct. To play in 2009 he only needs to get picked up in one of the drafts at the end of the year (and of course satisfy any requirements of the AFL). As the previous poster pointed out, Stuart Dew was not on anyone's list last year yet is playing this year, so why would Cousins be any different. All Cousins needs is a full pre-season and he will be a star again next year. The guy is a gun.

The difference is that Stuart Dew didnt face trial for bringing the game into dissripute and have to conform to the AFL's special rules.

I am quite sure that one of the requirments for Cousins to return in 2009 was to nominate for a WAFL (or similar) side before the end of June. I may be wrong but I am sure that is the case.

As would I.
I dislike collingwood as much as the next person, but I'd rather see Cousins at a strong club with a good list than to finish his days with a straggler like Melbourne or St Kilda.

On the news here in Melbourne they were reporting something about Cousins. I didn't catch the story, only the news update. But they said something about his plans to nominate for the draft this year.

And I'm sure I saw a photograph of them having coffee in some paper. I don't think they are great mates but I think Judd is smart enough to waste his time hating a guy with a serious problem.

Regarding the Chick/Embley fight, the other story was the fight was about Embley bringing over Ben ex-girlfriend over to Chick's house when they were 'busy' with some girls and etc....

Love to see him back but I reckon its more likely that he won't play again.

Does anyone know if he is eligible to enter the ND or only the PSD?

If it is only the PSD, he has little chance of getting to a competitive club.

If he can enter the ND, then it will be which ever club that wants him pulls the trigger first.

As much as I would love him to slot into the Hawks midfield, I can't see Cousins coming to Hawthorn.

I can't see the Hawks fitting him in under the salary cap in the next yr.

My tip is he will end up at Melbourne, as they will have high draft picks in both the national and pre season drafts.

Didn't Embley take Cousin's ex (who apparently is good mates with Embley's Mrs) around to Chick's house looking for Ben during a binge? Appraretly all three of them rocked-up and Chick didn't like it.

Exactly - I actually think that he will struggle to get on a list at all, and if he does, he will come very cheaply. It very much is a case of what club will take him, not what club he wants to go to. No doubt he would be a great pick-up and would perform, but clubs would see it as too big a risk I would have thought.

Carlton NO F-ing way
Hawks as above
Between Ess, Rich and Collingwood

IMO cancel collingwood ---> PSD whoever finishes lower between ess and rich will get him.
Melbourne WON'T pick him up nor will he agree to play for a rabble organization.
WCE/FREO obviously will not be interested (FISH BOWEL effect)...

Ess V Rich just took on a little more importance....

Collingwood
Carlton
Hawthorn
Bulldogs
Geelong

Collingwood and Carlton would be the only two to entertain the thought off that list, I would reckon. The others don't need him, and probably don't want to upset what they have there at the moment.

I don't think he will have that many options.

The only person who tapped on Judd's mrs which is true was Gardiner. Without a doubt.

Judd is still mates with cousins, back in judds early days he would go out clubbing with cousins and gardiner so make your own assumptions.

The Embley and chick thing was because Cousins was living with Chick and didnt like the fact embley and the ex mrs all rocked up to try talk to Ben knowing he was on a binge...

I never said that Melbourne will use their first pick on him.

I say there is a possibility that he will end up at Melbourne, because Melbourne will have a lot of draft picks as Bruce, Green, and Miller will be possible trades, will be cashed up with Neitz and Yze retiring and other players being delisted, and could use a draft pick to pick up Cousins.

Hawthorn and Geelong will struggle to fit him under their salary cap, can't see him going to either the Western Bulldogs, Kangaroos, Sydney, Brisbane or the Adelaide clubs.

He won't stay in Perth, so that leaves Melbourne, St Kilda, Richmond, Carlton, Essendon or Collingwood.

oh god please no. at this stage, he could be playing in the reserves anyway. theyre too fukn good to be able to fluke cousins.

as stated earlier by a previous poster, yes, cousins would turn carlton into a top 4 side.

but realistically, i can only see him going to collingwood in that list. doggies and hawks and cats already have cracking mids. carlton have great young mids who are under judds wing.

that just leaves the pies. ohhhh how we would hate them that much more.

but lets look at this with wide eyes here boys, drug habbits dont develop overnight. he woulda been on the drugs long before any of us found out. he could of been on them in his brownlow year. which is scary really. to think what he cudda done clean. the producers of ice would be loving it tho "ice - the substance of champions!"

If Cousins wants to play AFL again he will go to whomever will take him and although word is he isn't as flush with $$$ as some people think, again I don't think $$$ will be a huge issue.

Points though - Could he be picked up in the National draft without playing for an eligible club.... I would think not.... and even if he could, he would get paid minimum wage like other draft picks (unless he goes top 5 or 10 or whatever)

If he goes Pre-session draft he can put a price on his head but again, can he nominate if he is not playing for an eligible team - as don’t forget he has been de-registered as a player.

Obviously with players that get drafted from country leagues (Luke Vogels is one that leaps to mind), you don't need to be a reg player with the VFL/WAFL-- an affiliated country league is good enough.

Would be very very surprised if no Victorian club would touch him. The Pahhhr would be the only non-Vic club that might (unless Freo have a wide perverse streak). Because of the tarnish that now attaches to him, no sane club would pick him sight-unseen without interviews, vetting etc.

Therefore, if there's a club that he has an 'in principle' deal with, it's in the interests of that club to talk down his return and deny any interest (and Cousins to meet his end of the deal by either making himself scarce when other clubs call, or sounding lukewarm when they interview him), so they can use their 4th round pick on him rather than having to use their 2nd.

Is a non-current AFL player allowed to nominate only for the PSD, and not the ND?

looks like 12 days was right?

CONFESSED drug addict Ben Cousins will play state league football this year, his first major step in resuming an AFL career in 2009.

It's believed Cousins will register with a VFL team before Monday's deadline.

It's possible Cousins, who is in Perth, may register to play in the WAFL.

But indications last night were he was likely to move to Victoria in the coming weeks and restart his football career.

Cousins is expected to fill out the necessary paperwork to play VFL, which would include a playing contract.

AFL rules do not allow him to play for VFL clubs Collingwood and Geelong – effectively AFL reserves teams – which means Cousins will play for one of 12 VFL clubs, including Tasmania.

As of late last night, the complex situation means the club Cousins would play for is not aware of his intentions.

Carlie Merenda, of Flying Start management group, flew to Perth last night to finalise Cousins' immediate future.

"Carlie will be in Perth over the next four or five days doing a number of things for Ben, a part of which is informing him of the processes that need to be put in place by Monday, if he wants to play footy," Flying Start boss Ricky Nixon said last night.

"That's something Ben will have to make a decision on over the weekend, which includes which state, which club, etc etc."

Nixon said it was "more likely than unlikely" Cousins would play VFL this year.

Several AFL clubs have contacted Nixon about Cousins playing for them next year and this step is the strongest indication yet Cousins will attempt an AFL comeback in 2009.

It's believed one club has said it would draft Cousins if he was mentally and physically fit, and if he makes himself available.

That Cousins, a Brownlow medallist, premiership player and former West Coast captain, is embarking on this pathway strongly suggests that an AFL comeback beckons.
"Ben was given a process by the AFL and he accepts that. He wants to go through that process and he wants to show at this stage he's capable of going through that process," Nixon said.

The AFL Commission, in announcing its 12-month deregistration of Cousins in November, said Cousins would be free to play this year, subject to state league constitutions.

AFL chief executive Andrew Demetriou said last night: "He's entitled to register. That's fine if he wants to play this year. We've always said that if he wants to run around this year, it would be good for him."

Demetriou was supportive of a Cousins comeback.

"If it's part of his rehabilitation process and it helps him get back to good health and playing footy is part of that, absolutely (it is good for him)," he said.

AFL Victoria chief executive Peter Schwab said last night he was not aware of Cousins' intentions of signing with a team.

"I haven't heard," Schwab said. "But if he makes an application, if he applies the right way, and the forms correctly, I can't see any issue with it."

Port Melbourne, which was linked to Cousins earlier in the season, said last night it had not spoken to Cousins or his representatives.

Cousins just bought a 1.25 million dollar unit at the Burswood could this mean he will be staying in WA if he returns to footy or will he just sell it and move elsewhere?? if a Vic side wants him?

Do they have any ties with an AFL side?

That's a tricky one. They are currently melbourne's affiliate, but they will change to st. kilda's affiliate next season. But if he was going to them because of an AFL club, then it would be melbourne.

As much as i'd love him in the red & blue, i can't see it happenning. We're at least 2 years off finals, and he'll be almost finished by then.

But Sandy are one of the more successful VFL sides, so maybe he just want to join a good side in a beach-side suburb?

I like Collingwood, Geelong and Hawthorn at those odds.

Maybe Melbourne give Cousins one million for a one year contact and get him through the pre season draft and then bet a million at $12 to get out of debt.

Wayne Britian is kidding himself if he thinks he wouldn't draft Cousins if he was left at the bottom of the draft.

The Richmond assistant coach was spot on

``You just can't say: `No, we're not going to go after Ben Cousins,''' Royal told SEN.

``Probably we'll look at it two ways, as long as he's fully rehabilitated, does he come into our midfield? Does he take the spot of one of our up-and-coming developing midfielders? That could be the case.

``Or does he come into your midfield with his experience of being a Brownlow medallist, a premiership player, a captain, does he come in and actually teach your midfielders certain aspects of the game which have helped him over the years?

"So you can look at both sides of things.''
