Just joined the ranks of Full HD tv owners and wanted to know what sort of AFL broadcasts I'm going to be seeing this weekend.
What resolution are 7 and 10 showing their AFL HD?
Will I get Dolby 5.1?

Hehe me too. I don't think Channel 7 broadcast footy in HD anyway so you're only getting 2 HD games a week through Channel Ten.

Yeah Channel 7 is useless and still only displays in SD
10 HD is a big improvement over the normal picture but in Perth we often get the foxtel feed at the Saturday night timeslot so I don't watch the HD one. I am still unsure whether they are displaying the saturday arvo one in HD yet, they weren't last year.

As far as I know 7, 9 and 10 all use 1080i on their HD channels. They are capable of transmitting 5.1 but I doubt they'd do it for footy. Regular Dolby Surround decodes pretty well in digital though, plenty good enough for sports programming.
Channel 7's HD is just an upconvert of their SD broadcast. Ten's Saturday night game is a proper HD broadcast though and is excellent, it's also in 5.1 DD.

Guess I'll have to watch the Eagles this Saturday night to check it out.

Foxtel's July mag shows that they are going to start braodcasting some games this year in HD. The first will be Hawks v Sydney.

I don't notice that much difference between HD and normal tv. Its all pretty much the same to me.

What?! The difference is night and day. What tv are you using? Is it calibrated? How close are you sitting?

I have a 50 inch Pioneer plasma. What's calibrated? I sit about 3 to 4 metres away, directly opposite.

Ten's HD broadcasts are of exceptional quality. I do wish Seven would lift their game and show the matches in genuine HD.

Having had a look at 7's SD and HD broadcasts, there is a bit of difference.
SD looks sub par, almost analogue like and their HD broadcast is more like a SD broadcast. Pretty poor quality.

What year Pioneer is it? Calibrated meaning professionally setup, or done on your own using a calibration disc. You're too far back anyway, for full HD broadcasts you need to be about 2.5m close, or even closer, to a 50 inch screen to fully resolve all of the extra detail.
Move a bit closer to the screen during tomorrow night's HD footy broadcast and then switch between 10 and 12 and see if you notice a difference.

Too far back? Its about 3 metres or a bit more if the couch is in recliner position. Who sits 2 metres away? Anyway I have stood closer to have a look during the footy and have switched between those channels and it has just left me wondering if its a HD broadcast or not. To me looks the same as 7 and only marginally better than foxtel.
Anyway don't know what the exact year of manufacturer is but I got it brand new 3 months ago.
Nothing wrong with my TV, I just don't see the big deal with the HD thing.

the footy isn't that special in HD, it is better though...
if you really want to see your tv show off, watch some dedicated HD programming... 10HD have a documentary series on megastructures screen each weekday afternoon... it can show what your tv is capable of...

Agreed. Ten's HD is very clear.
No HD on Channel 7 for footy; sucks.

actually, i forgot how much better it is... 10 broadcast is quality...
except at the moment the commentary team sounds like ned from south park... they do have problems with the audio on the HD broadcast, the audio seems to cut out quite a bit...

I have that problem with the Footy Show in HD, always cuts out at the wrong moment too. Anyway, I'm yet to see a match in HD, Southern Cross Ten haven't caught up to their city counterparts yet
