They just said on AFL teams on Fox Sports that according to Champion Data Gazza has an estimated 20 Brownlow votes so far for 2008. To qualify this Champion data picked Jimmy Bartel to win last year and was out by 1 vote on the final tally. Compared him to Judd and Kouta in previous years.
Very Interesting.

How many votes did Judd poll in how many games at the start of 07? I wonder if that will be broken. I hope he tears WCE a new one so he has better memories than the freo game.
did they say how much black was on, IMO Black would be a few ahead of gary atm.

That was a quick suspension cats2rise, you must have offered some sort of inducement, in cash or kind, to a certain mod to be back that quick?;)
It's interesting that Champion Data predicted Jimmy's votes that closely... maybe Gaz is a chance this year.
I'd like to see how many votes CD have estimated for other players; Richo and Black in particular.

Now back to Gazza-
They compared Gazza from memory to a run of 11 games Judd in 06 who got 16 votes and Kouta back in his hey day got 19 votes. I will tape the repeat and get the info correctly for you.
I don't read much into predictions, specifically Jimmy got a 3 in one of the last 4 rounds last year when whoever was providing the predictions for TV had him getting nothing.
It's a shame stats don't translate to umpires giving votes.
Though most Brownlow winners deserve it, there are rounds that you must shake your head at when they recieve votes over others.
Sense making is not my forte tonight, please excuse me.

Ok here is what they showed on AFL Teams:
Judd games 5-18 2006 averages: 27 disposals, 3 marks, 7 clearances, 5 inside 50's, score 19.11, Brownlow Votes 16.
Kouta games 7-17 2000 averages: 32 disposals, 8 marks, 8 clearances, 5 inside 50's, score 29.13, Brownlow Votes 19.
Gazza games 1-11 2008 averages: 29 disposals, 5 marks, 5 clearances, 6 inside 50's, score 14.12, Predicted Brownlow votes by Champion Data: 20
again Champion data predicted Jimmy Bartel would win last year and was only one vote off the actual tally.
I am not saying that this means anything other than it is an interesting comparison.

That period of games was amazing from Kouta. Just seemed that he was faster, fitter, more skilful and harder than anyone else on the field.
Opponents would try anything to beat him, and yet he just still somehow came out with the ball, and kicked goals all over the place.
Must say, Ablett's past few weeks have looked eerily similar. He's not as tall and athletically gifted as Kouta was, but his ability to keep his feet means that everyone else ends up looking like bumbling fools whenever he is around the footy. That's what Kouta used to do to opposition players.

His chances have increased this year, not because of his stats, but because he has stopped back-chatting to the umps.

Must say, i have noticed this.... Was discussing it with a few mates recently.
I think he'll nail the brownlow and go one step closer to becoming one of the greats.

Deserving of it too:thumbsu:
I hope he wins, I like him, and also the fact that it would mean a big pay day for me :D
The boy has gotta go close but again it rests with what the men in yellow and green think on the day.
However he has had a purple patch this year and he has been a clear BOG in a handful of games where as last year he had 30 disp and Jimmy & Smithy had 29 a piece.
The best thing would be that with all this talk about blokes being illegible for the Brownlow for Gaz to come out and win in by a dozen votes and shut them all up! C'mon Gaz!!

I was talking to an American mate on my footy team about Kouta on Thursday night. When he was up and going he was probably the most destructive player in terms of pure athleticism I have ever seen. Sadly once he did his knee he was never the same again. One game I saw he played ruck, was roving his own taps then moving forward and jumping over peoples heads to score goals - ridiculous.

He stopped backchatting them because they actually give him a free kick when he gets held now - he used to get nothing!

According to Realfooty.com.au:

10 B Kirk (Syd),
A Goodes* (Syd)
9 S Black (BL)
8 K Johnson (Rich),
S Goodwin (Adel),
B Sewell (Haw),
C Judd (Carl),
S Pendlebury (Coll),

Interesting that Jim is still up there. I know he had a few good games early which I think people have forgotten about with his recent quiet form.

You'd think he'd be on 23 now after that performance. Just want to point something out though which I really love about his game. He's stopped complaining to the umpires!
Last year he had a good year, but he complained at just about every call. Umpires remember that and take into consideration on the 'fairest' part. Now Jnr looks like a totally different person, one that doesn't say a thing.
I remember posting something in reference to this last year, just after Jimmy won. Jimmy never says anything, in fact it is funny to watch when he ties someone up for HTB, he often looks for the umpire and shows them that he doesn't have his hand in there.
Maybe someone has let Gary know that to win, he needs everything to work out. Even going to the umps at the end of the game, I guess showing good sportsmanship.
Great effort by Jnr, I hope it pays off with something he's been dreaming of.

Corey is a B&F type player, not a Brownlow type player.
He is a fantastic team player, does a hell of a lot of grunt work and helps out his team mates no end. But he's rarely flashy so a lot of what he does goes unnoticed.

I would have him running second behind Gazza in our Brownlow count. Then Chapman has had some eye catching games and James Kelly could have a few as well.
That said, Bartel is obviously a bit of a darling of the umps, so the reality may be that he does indeed have a few more votes under the belt than he should.

In rounds 2, 3 and 4 this season, Bartel had 38, 30 and 31 possessions.
In every game last year that he had over 30 possessions and the Cats won, he got the 3 votes. Going by that logic, he has 9 votes at least.
In contrast, in 2007 Corey had 30+ possessions 6 times but only got the 3 votes on one occasion. He received 2 votes four times. This season, he has had 30+ on 7 occasions but going by last season, he may only get one or two 3 voters for that.
You'd think he'd be on 23 now after that performance.
You would think so, Lets say after playing 12 games he has 23 votes, thats just below 2 a game. so If he keeps this up and if he plays the remaining 9 games he could have 40 or so votes come brownlow time
Lots of if and coulds, but at the same time it's fun to speculate:p

I can definately see Ablett getting at least 4 more BOG's by season ends, not to mention the odd 1 & 2 votes.
Does anyone know the record, as Ablett could realisticaly get votes in the mid 30's.

Does anyone know the record, as Ablett could realisticaly get votes in the mid 30's.32 by Robert harvey in 1998 and Des Fothergill joint winner with Herbie Mathews in 1940 also got 32. Thats not including 1976 -77 when both umpires gave 3, 2 & 1 votes
Gaz is definately on track for a record:thumbsu:

IS a two horse race....For those of you who don't watch much of the Western Bulldogs, i will let you in on a little secret, Adam Cooney is very good.
Sure, not Ablett good, but he definately does the things that attract votes and leads a midfield that has contributed to 11 victories. Cooney will poll a number of BOGS, so Ablett will have to keep getting votes (which you would have to expect he will) to ensure victory as Cooney will continue to poll (except when the paddle pop lion destroys him again in rnd 16!!!)
simon black would be right up there atm. at least 5 bogs, would not have polled last 2 rounds but

Gary Jr this season from the Supercoach stats has received 30 frees for and has conceded just 8 against. Hopefully that sort of ratio manifests itself with plenty of votes in the brownlow for him. He has been in absolutely magnificent form all year has Little Gaz!
