View Full Version : If you finish bottom who would you use your PSD #1 pick on?

Given your and the Eagles position on the ladder lets assume this doesn't change. As a supporter who would you be happy for your club to use the #1 PSD draft on recruiting an uncontracted player?

On the drafting board I posted a fairly interesting scenario regarding the Dees.

No doubt you will be chasing one of everything, a quality ruck, a KP forward, a mid and a KP back. Already Warnock at Freo has been linked to Melbourne due to his brother being there.

Also it seems Kosinski at the Saints is out of contract.

With the #1 PSD pick the Dees are in the ultimate position to either negotiate a great trade and or pick up a player for free with the PSD pick 1.

So how about;

Either Warnock or Kosinski for a 2nd round pick, say 19.
Either Warnock or Kosi for PSD pick #1.

D Rich with your first round #1 pick.
A quality KP Back with your Priority 2nd round pick #17.

So the Dees end up with a 20yr old 200+cm ruck.
A 25yr old 200+cm ruck/FF.
D Rich - best mid in the draft.
And another quality KP back.

Not including any other trades or late picks thats a pretty good start in rebuilding your list IMO.

Thoughts?

Mate there is no way that if Melbourne finished last they would pass on Natanui (Not sure of correct spelling). It just couldn't happen, this guy is a freak and will be the saviour to the Melbourne Football Club. I have heard some unbelievable stuff about this guy, corporates will be lining up to get on board once we pick him!! I hate to say it, but I dont want to win another game!!

Hmmm Koschitzke would be handy...
I'm getting excited reading about all this, and it's my wish that we DO take Daniel Rich with the number 1 Pick.
Winning games is my number one priority, however I think we will still finish bottom even if we win one or two more games which is optimistic at best. Go Dees

I don't think that we really need a key back with the young KP stocks in the backline at the club. The major holes are a full forward which will hopefully be filled by Newton, a ruckman which will probably be filled by Natanui and then speed in the midfield that can be filled with draft picks after pick 1 due to the hard nuts like Jones, Moloney and McLean.

I wouldn't be pinning too much hope on Newton at full forward.I'm not convinced he's up to it.I hope I'm proven wrong!

It would be worth the MFC also having a back up plan for Full Forward.

I posted a similar thought on the Eagles site. We were debating who would Melbourne take with pick 1, Rich or Natanui. Either way is a win win situation but I agree, Natanui is such an eye catching player, he's a gun for sure but eye catching and a marketing agents dream. Rich is a gun but doesn't stand out as much. Just imagine how many Natanui shirts, dolls, hats etc you could sell. Basically there is no other player out there who looks like him.

If the Eagles finish 15th we'd be happy with either however a gun mid is obviously in greater demand than another ruck. Looks like we could both end up happy campers come draft day:thumbsu:.

I'd be keen for us to grab a couple of players from Freo. Ryan Murphy is one who I'd be very keen in trying to get to the Dees. He is a talented kid, but just can't seem to pull it together in the west, and in the HUN this morning Dermie was calling for a Victorian club to bring him home and help him deliver on his promise.

Pick 18/Chris Johnson/Jamar--Murphy/Warnock

Pick 1- Natanui
Pick 17- Best player available (if we don't get Murphy)
Pick 18-Freo

Of course if we could acquire one of these guys pre-season then thats all good, but clubs don't let that kind of thing happen these days, and freo will probably be looking for as many pick as they can get their grubby hands on.

I'd pass on Robbie Warnock in order to get Naitanui, put a bit of confidence in PJ and Meesen who are coming through.

Use our PSD pick on someone with a bit of pace, hopefully we are able to throw a bit of money at a big-name, and tempt them to enter the PSD.

Too expensive. Either
1) Jamar for Warnock (direct swap) because Warnock is leaving and Fremantle should consider this option. Otherwise, Fremantle will lose Warnock for nothing.

2) Murphy should worth late 3rd rounder to 4th rounder. Pick 18 is too expensive.

3) Chris Johnson. Perhpas give another season a go.

It's asking a bit much to have two insanely good ruckman. Having a superstar ruckman (Nat) and a quality second string (Warnock) is all you need IMO. So, if it all works out nice and dandy we'll have two brand spankin new youngin rucks coming to Melbourne with Jeffery *cries* and Jamar on the way out.

The reason I think we shouldn't go for Rich is because, in my mind, it would be harder to pick up a freakishly awesome rucking marketing machine as opposed to a quality midfielder

and to all the other do gooders out there, why don't u ring triple m when lyon is on and abuse him. every week for about 5 weeks they talk about the "best" thing for the bottom clubs. lyon and brayshaw always say go the tank, in not so many words. or give archer a bit of shit when he blatantly says he wants his team to play for picks, if they were in the deez position

CaptainDavey

As always, tanking has proved nothing, nudda, zilch, teams like Carlton and Hawthorn have achieved bugger all since their tanking 'attempts'.

I'd rather my team be a Geelong or an Adelaide, built without bottoming out and having ourselves whored out to the rest of the competition. But if you want to see your team being uncompetitive and end up a bandwagoning piece of shite like the Hawks, well you haven't got much respect from me

was that meant for me or everyone in general, including lyon and archer. having been a member since 94 i think i have been an seen enough of the good and the bad not to be called a so called bandwagon jumper. just wanna see a flag, thats all. as would g.lyon

The media can talk all they want about tanking but we aren't tanking. People think just because teams are losing or they've decided that the senior players aren't performing and they get dropped to give a kid a go it's tanking. It's not about wanting to lose, nobody wants to lose, it's just the pain we're having to go through to build a premiership side. I'm sick of losing but I'm also sick of mediocre seasons like in the past, I want to go to a Grand Final in 2011 wearing my Melbourne jumper and cheering the boys onto the 13th flag.

i dont think we're tanking i just think we're playing shit football and dont wanna win meaningless games like the bulldogs game las year. but at the same time i actually think we're a shit load better than our ladder position suggests and thats why i'm worried we will do something stupid like win the last 6 games of the year and finish tenth and lose out on all the best picks

i'm not a tanking supporter, but i don't think M is out there on her/his/its own limb on this point,...... of course no one here will actually say it.

You're on drugs.

Agreed!

Rich does appear to be the type of midfielder we desperately need, good inside and a smart finisher. We're ok for inside mids I reckon, but with TJ gone Bruce & Morton appear our best outside options & that worries me a bit.

I'd be willing to pass on Natanui if we could secure Rob Warnock. Rich + Warnock would strengthen 2 areas at once & that's hard to pass up...

Full Forward is a headache we can tackle once we've got the engine room sorted. Newton shits me but I hope he comes good, otherwise Garland would be the one to have a go at full forward in a full strength team with Rivers & Petterd stabilizing our defence.

U would be crazy to not take nicnat at 1
imo rich is overated there are other very good mids in this draft
I rate Ziebell very highly
if anyone can snag him for a pick 5-10 they got a very good deal imo his top 5

:pHow this for funny. I was watching a documentry on tanks a while back and they were rating which tanks were the best in certain areas.

The Americam Abrams had the best armor, suspension and accuracy but was most expensive.

The Russian one had the fastest reload time, was the cheapest.

The German Tiger was most versitile and could go under water.

The French tank was the best in only one area.......it was the fastest. Yep, the French know how to retreat in style:D

Just like ramping up defense on your country's border - not realising that there is a few more areas that actually make up the perimeter of the country...

Ahh Maginot, Dean Bailey's round 1-2 teams owe you for inspiration.

Is it just me, or is that poor bugger being used as a step ladder a dead ringer for Cameron Ling?

To answer the OP, it's hard to say at this early stage without knowledge of who is likely to be available. Warnock is talked about a lot but is no certainty to want to come home and may be surplus to requirements if Naitanui is our first pick. IMO, we are in desperate need of a quality ruckman to replace White, KP forwards and some pace and polish in the middle. I would like to see the club aggressively pursue which ever one of those needs it was unable to fill in the draft.
