think he is improving and can get alot better just a couple of things l noticed about him. 1 is as soon as he gets hold of the ball and about to go for a run he takes a bounce when he doesnt have to. i reckon he loses about half a second when he does this, which can be the diff in being tackled. Just grab it and run son. worry about he bounce after your 12 steps. cant believe the coaches have not picked up on it. 2 is when hes in a pack he takes his eyes off the ball and looks at the oncoming player. this is a bad trait with him which must be eradicated. Looks soft when he does this.

Alot of players bounce the ball well before the required distance if they anticipate traffic up ahead. If he is in the clear he is more than entitled to bouce if he is going to run through traffic, as then he has a fresh 15m to run without worrying about a bounce

cos if he looked at the footy he'd know how to sidestep, dummy or baulk around then eh wouldnt he?
the footy cant tackle you..so dont bother looking at it.i know i dont have to to bounce it

you could worry about taking the hit, you could pull weird faces out of fear of taking the hit, you could scream like a girl for all i care
just as long as he gets around the player and doesnt take the hit i dont care what he does
foley was caned a few years ago for this exact same infringement. doesnt seem to bother him :thumbsu:

You obviously didn't watch the St.Kilda match then did you?
He ran about 30 metres with the flight of the ball into oncoming traffic and took a mark, was smashed, went off the ground, then later came on and almost won us the game.

Let's not be dogs & jump into this kid just because he isn't playing like G. Ablett yet!
He was still 20 years old at the start of this season.
He is averaging 30 posesions per game over the past month. (& IDGAF if there are often more handballs than kicks. It means he is finding the ball an average of 30 times a match. Excellent appetite for work)
He is now taking the game on & asserting himself.
He is showing leadership now. (A number of times on Sunday he was barking instructions to the team... running up to others to have a word in their ear at critical times)
He covered every square inch of the ground on Sunday & was a massive part of our surge in the 2nd quarter.
I just reckon we are far too quick to look for negatives about Lids.
We have a dead set gun here who will be in our top 3 best & fairest for years so let's enjoy the show fellas...

Think you are over analysing fanatigger... He's been a bit quiet this year in terms of the long runs with the footy, it was great to see him still tuck the nut under his arm and leaves all in his wake on Sundaty - hopefully keeps doing it;).
Perhaps an early bounce is unnecessary but I've never seen Lids get into trouble because of it so I wouldn't be worried about it. I haven't even really noticed him do it that often anyway.

The minute Lids set foot on the field in yellow and black, it was like looking at day when we had been looking at night for the forever. The first thing i said when he debuted was that at ____ing last we had a player who looked like he knew what he was doing and knew how do it, without having to go to his post it notes. He is developing exactly like Luke Hodge. Slowly setting the base for a long sustained career as a top class player. ;)

Yep i second that
This Kid has been good for us all year. :thumbsu:
Judging by how many players do that, I'd say that's what they're trained to do.
If that is the case, then I think there must be some reason/rationale for it.

Yep like hodge but quicker also apparently bench presses the most at the club so has developed his strengh ouyt fo sight, which is definately showing through this year, has made a significant step towards becoming an elite player :thumbsu:
RECORDS!

This thread is total bullshit. What more do you want from a 21 year old running, goal kicking midfielder than than 30 possies a game. Are we expecting perfection from humans on this board. Every player has flaws, Deledio just has less than most. Has been an absolute gun this year - some people are never happy.

Na, I reckon there might be a grain of truth in the OP. Players are judged on so many stats, or KPIs in the bullshit business jargon of the modern game, and "running bounces" is one of them (I wonder if they count stationary bounces). I think that creates the temptation to do exactly as the OP says (and I have noticed too). RFC coaching staff need to tell Lids it's not how many bounces we care about, it's how far you carry the ball. I've seen him dawdle and have 3 bounces in 15m, when none are required. Just go, boy!
Having said all that I am very happy with how he is going. We do need him kicking more than handballing but he is winning more hard ball now and I'm confident it will all come together and he will be a bona fide superstar.

I have a theory... (for what it is worth)
If there is a bit of room to run but you are not in a wide open space, take an "early" bounce and this will give you 15 M of running space to make your decission on disposal or perhaps take a 2nd bounce.
If you were to take off for 10M & then find yourself under a bit of pressure there would be less time/space to effect a clean disposal because you will be worried about being pinned for running too far.
Taking an "early" bounce at the start of a gallop or indeed during one gives you 15M of decission time from that point onwards.
Like a bit of insurrance perhaps?
Is this over analysing? :o

no, this is...... if you have a footy brain, assess what suits a given situation and do what you have to. That way, you never do the wrong thing when it comes to bouncing it early/late. ;)

Otherwise you end up doing what has now been added to popular footy vernacular - "An Andrew Raines".
Grab the ball, put your head down & sprint for 10M, find yourself in trouble & handball sideways to some poor guy with Dean Soloman bearing down on him...
In fact I believe all new rookies & recruits at all AFL clubs no longer get heads flushed down the crapper or have turds slipped into their locker when they first join the club. (Occ. health & safety issue apparently)
Instead they get taken out to the training track with the most senior, biggest, toughest, meanest players on the list & they get set up and get thoroughly "Rainsed".

or you can do "An Andrew Raines with a flying sukohara and a double pike", by
grabbing the ball, putting your head down & sprinting for 10ms. eluding the first player, becoming unconcious because of the first elude, and not handballing sideways to the poor guy, with Sola bearing down on him, but running slap bang into Sola, and having us pissing ourselves laughing at how ridiculous that looked. ;)

he is good but can be great. understand he is young and can only get better.
IMO Deledio has so much more talent hidden away in that body of his...with maturity he will be an elite player of the game and i hope he does because he has all the qualities to become a champion like so many others in the game.
