View Full Version : ROUND 13: WEST COAST vs GEELONG, SUBIACO

After proving to Port Adelaide that going the knuckle does no good in modern footy, Geelong head to Perth for the 2nd time this season to face the Eagles. Geelong are looking to stay in top spot, the Eagles caught in a slump with 1 win from their last 11.

In team news, the home side gets back a few premiership players. Late withdrawl from last week Kerr returns, as does midfield buddies Fletcher and Braun. A little extra firepower up front also is in with McKinley and Hansen (after his most recent trip to where Bruce Reid got taped up) also in. No change for Geelong, and no bookie would have even put up a market for that.

This is the first of 2 meetings this year (they meet again in the last round at the Cattery). The Eagles lead the head 2 head 21-15 with a draw in 2003 (and 2 wins that mattered the most). They also lead the ledger in Perth 8-5, and 6-4 at Subi. Including the draw, the hosts have also won 4 of the last 7 against the defending premiers. However Geelong have been successful in their last 3 visits to Subi (including Freo fixtures).

TIP: Geelong by 48 pts, can't see the Eagles stopping the support cast if they try to contain #29.

Should be an interesting game. I'm confident but a little wary of the Eagles. They have been struggling, however, their home form lately hasn't been too bad. They beat Adelaide and took it up to Sydney - two teams that will play finals this year.

I must admit, I'm a little dissapointed that we never really got to see Geelong v West Coast when both teams were at their peak. This week the Eagles have brought in a few premiership players and they'll need them. Geelong have so much depth running through their midfield and this is where the game will be won. Also, despite the Cats missing Scarlett, I think West Coast will struggle to kick a competitive score. I thought Geelong might have brought in Wojicinski to break the lines of the big Subiaco ground but we've made no changes. The match-up of the game will be Cox v Ottens. Two premiership ruckmen and two of the best going around. Ottens is still running himself into fitness and form so I think Cox may take the honours.

I think this game will be tight for about a quarter and a half before Geelong break the shackles through sheer numbers in the midfield. The big ground suits the Cats style of play much more than even our home ground. We used to have a terrible interstate record but it has been good of late.

I really had some form of optimism about this game, until some of the youngins like masten (I was expecting a 4 goal, rising star nomination, gamebreaking effort from him on ablett ;)) got pulled out.

So funnily enough my confidence has dropped with the input of the older players, which shows how much i expect from them in the future i guess

I'm hoping Kerr plays on Ablett because that match would be interesting, but i'm sure that ling will tag him and not let me see that matchup.

Cox Vs Ottens will be great to see, Cox should rebound in fine form after his drop last week against Hille. I hope.

Ebert to get the rising star  :thumbsu::thumbsu:

Hansen to do something unexpected, be it a horrible career ending injury, or a game that he wont be injured in ;)

Selwood and stokes in doubt

Joel Selwood and Mathew Stokes did not join their teammates at Melbourne Airport and they are no certainties to make the trip.
"They are going to do a fitness test so they are very close to playing, otherwise we wouldn’t have selected them," Thompson said.
"We have got our fingers crossed that they will be okay."
Ryan Gamble, David Wojcinski and Kane Tenace are the emergencies for the Saturday night match at Subiaco.

Saw both teams first-hand last week, if both teams play the same way Geelong will win by 80-120. I highly doubt that will happen though, the eagles managed to nearly get Sydney 2 weeks ago and if they can play like that again they are in with a real chance.

If WC are switched on and the Cats are off the boil (6 day break and playing interstate), as the Pies proved they could shake them.

Wouldnt be surprised to see the Eagles up at half time though.

Stokes out, Wojcinski in From 3MMM.

At least Stokes will get to watch it from the sidelines. If he passed his medical yesterday, do you think this is just a precaution? or a tactic to bring our resident speedster to the wide open spaces of Subiaco?

I'm looking forward to watching the match, and think we may pull away at a steady pace from the opening bounce, pulling up part way into the third quarter scores becoming closer towards the end of the fourth.

Umpiring hasn't been that bad, just a couple of inconsistent decisions, i'd be a lot more annoyed at them if we were losing though.

Crowd has gone dead silent, it feels weird seeing WC playing so bad, they were such a powerhouse team making a semi just last year, the plus is they are playing a lot of kids and they can cause the occasional upset here and there (vs Adel and nearly v Syd).

I commented on that too.

If you climb for the mark and end up with the ball....it's a mark, but if you climb over someone and don't......it's in the back....or at least it used to be.

Still, don't want to be seen complaining at this point in the game:D

I wouldn't go so far as to say Premiership form, we are a little sloppy but really you can't complain can you.

As for umpiring, it's been a bit ordinary. Both sides have had things that warranted free kicks, and some that didn't. Chapman got a gimme goal from a poor decision.

Ricardo
21 Jun 2008, 21:57

That stroll in goal from Gary just summed up the half:thumbsu:

There was a hint of intentional irony in that one...

If anyone needs to 'toughen the F up' it's those pompous Geelong supporters constantly complaining about the umpiring when it has no impact on the game as indicated by their 57 point half time margin.

----

Don't know what was meant by the whole thread is tanking... I believe tanking is defined as losing intentionally in order to pick up some young talent. Supporters conceding defeat half way in the game whilst down by 10 goals is NOT tanking, it's being REALISTIC. I'm not going to go all out and put all my money on west coast to win this game, but I'm not asking for us to lose by a lot on the flip side either.
