View Full Version : ROUND 13: MELBOURNE vs SYDNEY, MANUKA

For the first time in season 2008, we venture to the Nation's capital. History suggests that Canberra was chosen as our capital because it was a mid-point between Melbourne and Sydney, but it's football that we're trying to dissect. Before the dommsdayers come out, the decision to play this game here is for money (which Melbourne need as much as a win) and was made well in advance of the 1-12 record that the Dees have. For their part Sydney are the sleeping giant creeping into the top 4 almost without any fanfare (albiet 2 games behind 3rd) and are running into form.
Only additions for both sides at the selection table being the early Sunday game (which Brisbane and Sydney viewers can watch on FTA as well as Pay). And with all additions on the bench it's no guarantee that Matthew Whelan, Mark Jamar, Shane Valenti, Ben Mathews, Nic Fosdike or Luke Brennan will be in the final squads.
This is the 2nd meeting at Manuka between these sides. Sydney won by 8 goals in Round 18 last year in what wasn't a high standard clash. Head to head overall it's the Swans winning 104-91 with a draw.
TIP: Sydney by 48. Other interest will be in the crowd figure (will it get to 5 figures?) and whether Melbourne wear that ridiculous clash jumper.

Does anyone know whether there is a curtain-raiser for this game, or is it just the Auskick kiddies having a run around?
I do not think we can win, Sydney is great out fit. I just hope we play well and play for 4 quarters and only lose by under 5 goals. The key will be how well our young midfield can keep up with the experience hardened bodies of Sydney's midfieders. Also how well or defence can hold up to the fire power sydney have up forward.

I've got a bad feeling in the pit of my stomach about this game. Usually feel confident before all swans games but for some reason I am highly nervous about this one.
Melbourne by 9 points

Funky?
I was feeling fine till I read this. But still belive the swans will win by about 6 or 7 goals.

Apparently sunny day around 15 degrees with around 8000 tickets sold in advance so far. Just arrived from Syndey for the game and looking forward to an away game with a sea of red and white!!!

Sorry Cas, maybe that sick tummy feeling was from the dodgy fish I ate last night, but I still have a horrible feeling the Swans are going to drop this one.
1. Melbourne have been very competitive of late without being able to chalk up wins
2. We are due for a loss
3. We have much more to lose, a loss in this game would seriously damage our credibility and top 4 aspirations.
4. Even though we've won 4 of our past 5 in Canberra, I'm not convinced we play Manuka very well.
I heard that Melbourne were at something like $8 to win this game. If I were a supporter of the Demons I would be having a serious punt at those odds because I reckon it is way over.
TIP: Sydney by 48. Other interest will be in the crowd figure (will it get to 5 figures?) and whether Melbourne wear that ridiculous clash jumper.
It's a Melbourne "home" game so we will be wearing the good old red and blue, no silver.
Thank God.
Swans Emergency Ben Matthews did not play in the Reserves yesterday leading to speculation a player is in doubt. A veteran, Matthews has made a career out of tagging or running off Half Back Flank.
If someone is in doubt the speculation would be pointing toward Kennelly or Malceski.

You got an absolute one sided affair being played at a small ground in a regional centre. What are you expecting?

dunno, maybe a bit of quality from a so-called elite and professional sporting competition.
i guess its an event for canberrans, but does nothing for the game....and its just a band-aid for the Dees.

goodsey will be fine if stenglein didn't get cited neither should he same action, but will roosy please play craig bolton on bate he's their only avenue to goal and he's got bevo and mattner on him, should show more respect to an underrated player
Worried about Goodes - wish they'd show a replay or two.
carry over points may cost him? he got a reprimand earlier in the year didn't he?
better quarter from us... umpiries still doing a pretty bad job both ways...
happy with Chris Johnson who has had the better of o'keefe thus far... Bate has been good down forward, and I think Dunn is doing a reasonable job on Goodes...
need McLean and Jones to start getting more of the footy, and a better target up forward...
