View Full Version : How many of our boys could get a gig at Brisbane?

So Brisbane are clearly the benchmark in the competition so i thought i would put the question forth as to who in our squad would get a game in the competitions benchmark. Below is a list of the 22 guys that played for Brisbane last week. It looks pretty strong and i cant think of any major players that are missing.

Next to there names is there position to the best of my knowledge...im no Brissie expert. So who do you think from West Coast would get a game with Brisbane...if so someone from the Lions has to be dropped.

Jason Akermanis - midfield
Marcus Ashcroft - backline?
Simon Black - midfield
Daniel Bradshaw - forward
Jonathan Brown - CHF
Jamie Charman - ruck?
Robert Copeland - not sure...
Shaun Hart - midfield
Des Headland - midfield
Chris Johnson - backline
Nigel Lappin - midfield
Justin Leppitsch - CHB
Alastair Lynch - FF
Beau McDonald - Ruck
Malcolm Michael - FB
Tim Notting - not sure...
Martin Pike - backline
Luke Power - forward
Christopher Scott - backline??
Brad Scott - backline??
Michael Voss - midfield
Darryl White - backline

Nothing concrete as i will await all of your thoughts but a few queries i have are....Jako, he is pretty one dimensional but in that one role of CHB, he is extremely good. Would he play CHB for Brisbane, Leppitsch obviously wouldnt be dropped but maybe moved to somewhere elso on the ground. McIntosh or Michael?

Would Phil Matera get a forward pocket role? Wirrpunda? Cousins and Gardiner are no brainers but is there room in there very talented midfield for Kerr or Judd? Could Wilson add some bite to there forward line? Is Peter Matera still good enough and could he replace someone off half back or on a wing?

Questions questions....

Your thoughts? Oh and if any Brissie supporters see this, your comments are welcome.

Gardiner in the ruck would take Charman/McDonald's position. Possibly even Cox as the back-up ruckman

How many of our boys could get a gig at Brisbane?

Isn't that question akin to asking how many English test cricket players would make the Australian test cricket XII???

You wouldnt throw Leppitsch forward and use Jakovich at CHB who may i remind you has been way better than Leppa this season?

Cant really replace Wirrpunda with a tall. Perhaps McIntosh for White and Wirrpunda replacing someone else? We really are in a spot of bother if only 6 of our guys can break into the Lions squad.

Oh and what about Peter Matera, could he not replace one of the Scott's or Chris Johnson, surely he would get a gig in front of Copeland.

Very doubtful that Jakovich has had a better year than Leppitsch. Leppa could well be AA CHB this year.

You can replace Wirrpunda with a tall when White usually plays as a loose man in defence - Wirrpunda could do the same.

As for Matera replacing one of the Scotts - dont count on it. B. Scott will most likely be in the AA side wh ile C. Scott has still had a better year than Peter. He wouldnt get a gig in front of Johnson either. He would get a go in front of Copeland - I must of missed Copelands name.

I wouldnt say youre in a spot of bother if only 6 of your players could get in the side. Considering the Lions are the best team in the league and the Eagles are around 8-10 in the league youd be silly for thinking that anymore than maybe 7 or 8 players could crack into that line up.

Just out of interest Macca, how many Freo players do you think would make it in?

I'll stick my nose in before Macca comes back.

In all honesty only 5 maybe 6 at a squeeze, on this years form. The 6 would contain 3 backs, 2 midfielders and the maybe is a tall.

It's an interesting topic and really makes you think of your team in the large perspective.

If done on this years form, extract Farmer (you have him there on reputation).

Two other backs could come under consideration, Shane Parker (consistently good) and McPharlin (I know you don't rate him).

Anyway, around 5 would be a fair show of where both sides (Eagles & Dockers) are at the moment.

The other way of looking at this is assessing how some of the Brissie players would fair in a lesser team. Would White go missing, Lynch struggle for good supply, Jonathan Brown struggle and Chris Johnston be able to run off as much. Interesting question.

I might be biased, but this is what I think.

Jason Akermanis -
Marcus Ashcroft - Bell (midfield)
Simon Black -
Daniel Bradshaw - Croad (forward)
Jonathan Brown -
Jamie Charman - J. Longmuir (forward/ backup ruck)
Robert Copeland - McPharlin (half back)
Shaun Hart - Hasleby (midfield)
Des Headland -
Chris Johnson -
Nigel Lappin -
Justin Leppitsch -
Alastair Lynch -
Beau McDonald - Simmonds (ruck)
Malcolm Michael -
Tim Notting - Farmer (forward/ midfield)
Martin Pike - Pavlich (half back/ midfield)
Luke Power -
Christopher Scott -
Brad Scott -
Michael Voss -
Darryl White - Parker (backline)

Id say Pike, Michael and Leepitsch have all had better years than Parker this year. As for Mcpharlin...when have i ever said i dont rate him??

In direct answer as to who would get a game. My thoughts:

Jason Akermanis - midfield
Marcus Ashcroft - backline? COLLICA
Simon Black - midfield
Daniel Bradshaw - forward
Jonathan Brown - CHF
Jamie Charman - ruck? GARDINER
Robert Copeland - not sure... PETER MATERA
Shaun Hart - midfield KERR
Des Headland - midfield
Chris Johnson - backline
Nigel Lappin - midfield
Justin Leppitsch - CHB
Alastair Lynch - FF
Beau McDonald - Ruck
Malcolm Michael - FB MCINTOSH
Tim Notting - not sure... JUDD
Martin Pike - backline JAKOVICH
Luke Power - forward PHIL MATERA
Christopher Scott - backline??
Brad Scott - backline??
Michael Voss - midfield
Darryl White - backline

So, plenty would get a game. Its just that Brisbane heave good depth in their squad as well as a good helping of stars.

So you dont think Cousins is good enough to get a spot :D

What about Wirrpunda?

9 Dockers?? I think that was a little bias. Haselby, Pavlich, Bell would be the only 3 certs with J.Lo, Farmer and Croad being just on the fringe. Farmer in career best form would obviously get a go but he has had an indifferent year.

I think Jako is a big chance for AA. Leppitsch hasnt been that good all year.

So you rate McDonald and Charman higher than Simmonds?? And you don't think McPharlin and Parker are as good as Daryl White or Copeland?

Id give Simmonds a spot in front of Charman. Parker in for Copeland. I rate White though, a good player.

From the eagles -

Gardiner would easily take over #1 ruck

Cousins would fit in beautifully with Voss and co, but would probably take Black's spot (although I'm sure you could find an alternate spot for either of them somewhere)

Jako would take CHB no question

McIntosh is still in the best couple of FBs in the league, and with the help on supply from the midfield, no-one would kick a goal

Peter Matera would be a luxury off the bench

Wirrpunda across half back

Phil Matera in a pocket

Kerr, Judd, Cox and Gaspar would also be close.
