View Full Version : We must do what hawks did in the early 2000's..if you cant kick the footy we dont want you
We have more butchers in this team than I have ever seen in a side
In the early 2000's hawks coach at the time (schwabb) said we wont recruit players that cant kick the footy
we must do the same....Kerr for all his praise is a shocking kick...Priddis cant kick...stenglien cant hit a target....
our two best kicks to a target are Shanon hurn and lecras....
we must not recruitt buthcers ITS that bloody simple...if the Rich cant kick we dont need him....We need two lace out players....lace out means lace out...speed is overated..as the ball can always travel faster than somone can run...if you hit a a target it makes you look quick
In this game we have conceeded 10 goals thru turnovers...7 of them have been throough missing targets by foot
Geelong are not playing that well they are just feeding off our missed targets...then fanning out when we bucther it
Flecther must be delisted.....hes another shocking kick..hes a liability not an asset....

And while we're at it, surely Darren Harris has run his race as forward coach. When we actually score from a set shot, I'm surprised, and yet every other side in the comp make it look easy.

Which probably says a lot about the calibre of everyone else...

Geelong can kick? I thought their game plan remove pressure from the ball carrier allowing lace out kicks to forwards. Grow up West Coast are struggling with a game plan too match our goods. The Game evolved the same time we lost some prime players that kept us competitive, we need to build a squad of quality with confidence they can win a flag. If the individual don't fit the way we want to play then they must go.
I think we can rebuild well. We shall see.
Hurn is one of the worst kicks to a target in the squad
dont agree with that....in the final last year he was ok
my point is we have a team of butchers....Judd and cousins masked the fact we had a team of butchers...because they were so good at finding open space....they kicked when they were not under pressure...
we dont have guys like that anymore....
and look we are in for a bleek five years...why..in 2010 the top 20 players will go the new sydney team and gold coast team....
its actually going to be a bad time to be in the bottom half of the draw....just getting rich or another high pick is suddenely see us in the top 4...
I think it will be 2011 before we play finals again.....

Geelong can kick?
That's our major strength, ability to hit targets from anywhere. That and bigger bodies. It lets us get rid of the pill straightaway, disguises our lack of leg speed.
Weve got more butchers than a butchers convention - Ayyyyyy!!!! :thumbsu:

Anyone watch the Bulldogs today on Foxtel?
Hard to believe they actually play in the same competition as us.
Best foot skills in the AFL by a fair margin. We should watch their tape on Monday as well as ours. Might learn something.

Collingwood (with many players out) had the dogs on toast for most of the game.
Had they been accurate in the 2nd quarter they really could have been out to a 40 point lead by half time.
Dogs have good skills but are not unbeatable.

This is not a new issue. Even at the team's peak, disposals were very, very poor. At what point does the blame go to the coaching?
Who is the skills coach?

Agreed.
Judd and Kerrs disposal was a tad over-rated IMO.

Isn't it that guy we got from Fremantle? Michael Brodbridge?
If so, it explains a lot

I just checked, Michael Broadbridge IS our skills coach
Recruiting an ex-Fremantle coach for skills training, seriously what were we thinking!!!

Oppositiion pressure or percieved pressure can usual effect clean disposal skills.
The boys were rattled last nite skills were zero, exception being Lecra`s goal sense.

With the money we have, and the no limits on what can be spent on coaching staff... I'd be throwing everything at decent skills coach. I'd also look at trying to recruit a specialist match-day coach to help with team tactics. Would Sheedy like a part time job?

as ive said before this current squad has never been great by foot, but we relied on winning loads of ball through the midfield with Cox, Judd, Kerr, Cousins, Embley and if the opposition midfield won the ball we had Stenglein, Selwood and Braun to lay on the tackles and stop them moving it forward....
we scored goals through sheer weight of possession going forward.
now we have no Judd and Cousins....
Embley has been very up and down although he seems more up lately.
Kerr is struggling as the first midfielder, although i'm confident he'll break through in the same way Cousins did.
Stenglein and Braun are way out of form so opposition midfielders are running riot as there's no one to stop them....
the ass has just fallen right out of our midfield, and we don't have the quality up front to win matches without loads of ball.
with our forward set up, and the way it has been under worsfold, if we had an even amount of inside 50's with the opposition, we usually lost. but with our dominant midfield, we'd usually have at one and half times as many inside 50's as the opposition (i.e. 60% to 40%) and through that weight of possession we'd be able to get a winning score...

I dont think he said that, but it is important to have a balance in the midfield. There is no point having good in and under players who can win the football at the stoppages if you dont have the classy players in the middle who can deliver it lace out to your key forwards.

To be pedantic, it was Clarkson who said that after he saw the types of players Schwab and his recruiter picked up during the previous drafts. Clarkson has spent about three seasons weeding out the players who can't hit targets and has worked assiduously with his assistants to improve the kicking abilities of those that stayed (eg. Chance Bateman used to regularly miss targets but has been kicking the footy wonderfully this season - we missed him on Saturday).
