View Full Version : Did this make anyone else here really angry?

Have heard this weekend that Brendon Fevola has knocked back an offer of 3 years and $2 million from Carlton. Now look this bloke can be as devastating as any forward in the comp but please! He has given Carlton too much disappointing footy and very bad publicity over the years to demand more than this!

I feel Carlton could have easily cut Fev loose after his latest indiscretion but have stuck true to him and as a 27yo they have offered him what I think is a pretty generous deal considering all he's managed to do is keep out of trouble and kick a reasonable amount of goals for half a year.

Sorry if people feel it does not fit here but it made me think back to earlier this year when our elite players put their hands up to play for less. And also that when our forward line was not looking to great earlier in the year people said "how good would we be with Fev?"

My response now is as it was then. I would not want someone like him at Geelong.

Didn't make me angry, but yes, glad that our players are not greedy pricks.

He's 100% pure meathead. Great player, but a deadset knob. I'd love his talent at our club, but not his personality.

Carlton have a lot of young players so they have the room in the salary cap to pay Fev a large amount. Our players have taken pay cuts because we have no room in the salary cap and they want to stay together as a team. I think the situation is different really and if we had salary cap room I am sure a few of our blokes would have been asking for a big pay day.

I think Fev is being smart really. Football is only a short term career and he is getting what he can from the game. Good luck to him.

It wasn't the money, it was behavior conditions he rejected. It doesn't bother me, i've got a half dozen second hand stories about fev which back up his reputation as a ____ing tool, from bullying in high school to going agro at blokes for no reason when he's on the piss.

2m over 3 is money that only a couple of guys would reject without good reason. Frankly if Carlton want to give such a massive segment of their salary cap to 2 players then whoopy doo. They'll lose all those low draft picks they've been stocking because they can't afford their 22-25yr old prime salaries ... maybe we'll land one of them, they can wreck their team all they want I don't care.

You're right. It's not like he'll ever have a career in the media -- some of the guys going around now are a stubby or two short of a six-pack, but Fev seems on another level altogether. Guy has the IQ of a single cell organism, so he's right to try and put away as much money as he can for his slow descent into tabloid-baiting irrelevance.

what ive been told is there is no behavour clause at all and that it all comes down to the $$$$. it doesnt matter anyway, carlton always manage to fit people in their cap. a leopard never changes its spots.... as the saying goes

Personally I would be happier if Carlton offered Gazza a 1m a year deal and gave you Fev for good measure:).

Footballers have very short careers relative to their whole working lives. They have every right to try to maximise their earnings while they can.

Does it also perhaps show how crap the club culture is at Carlton vs Geelong. To me, it screams that the individual is more important than the team. Having said that, would his perception and actions be different if he did come to Geelong?

Yeah, they're extremely hard done by, aren't they.

He'd make more money in one year than a lot would manage in their lifetime. Sif you'd want someone like that at your club...

I didn't say he was hard done by.

Footballers make very good money because they have rare talents. It's the same with any career.

No, I don't want him at my club, but I don't see a problem with him getting the best deal he possibly can. The AFL generates extraordinary amounts of cash-flow. The people benefiting most from this should be the players because they are the talent.

not to mention the cost on their bodies for the rest of their lives.

True, just wonder if he'd take a pay cut if it was to win a premiership. $2 million dollars over 3 years in the stage of his career is something he should take, he wouldn't want to screw up again if he were to get more.

Good luck to them.

They do have room but that won't be the case forever. As much as I hate it Carlton will be damn good in a couple of years. When it comes time to re sign Murphy, Walker, Gibbs, Kruezer, Waite, etc after seeing what Fev has demanded what will stop them from a) not also looking for huge money all because they could get more somewhere else and b) behaving very badly if and when they get it.

I can see the whole 'footy is a job' point of view but it's not like he's being offered pea nuts and has not been paid probably better than he should have up until now. I hate the Blues as much as anyone but I think they have been damn good to Fev and deserve more loyalty from him. Two million over three years will still make Fev one of the more well paid players in the league.

Look, in Fev's defence, it is his agent handling all negotiations, not him directly.

Acting on Fev's instructions.

:D:D Perfectly described.

In the State game, Chappy passed the ball to him on the 50, he marked, Chappy ran on and was on his own about 35 out, but Fev didn't see him as his back was to the goal! Chappy stood there (Fev kicked the goal - it was a top kick - no doubting his talent) but PC made no effort to go and congratulate him - that type of selfish play would never be tolerated at Geelong. Just goes to show the difference in culture at the two clubs.

Don't lose sleep over Fev, The Sim Dog - the man is just about himself, and Carlton will never get anywhere with him there, so I hope they do sign him for something ridiculous.

Yeah probably right. Will only make them more likely to lose other players or try and cheat the cap again I suppose.

I'm the last person to defend the guy but to be fair without him Carlton wouldn't win a game, no matter how many #1 picks and dodgy business/remuneration deals they make. It would be kinda hard I suspect for even the most level-headed person to keep their head knowing that the success/failure of your club depends 100% on you.

But yeah the guy is a tool and he'd be dropped within two games at the Cats purely on attitude.

who cares, let him go far as much as he wants. Nothing wrong with trying to get as much as possible.
Its not like carlton need the room for any other players

Too right. I'll be happy to take a young gun off their hands in a few years if they're trying to pay Judd and Fev half the salary cap. In fact the more they ____ themselves over, the better!

Still Fev is a knob for knocking it back even if there were conditions he was unhappy with. It's hardly unfair for the administration to be asking for some sort of guarantee that he'll behave himself!

If they've learnt anything its that you can buy a grand final, keep the cup, take a few years on the bottom and be ready to play finals again.

Ask St Kilda or the Dogs if they'd take that deal.
