View Full Version : Caro's at it again: J. Brown to Collingwood

Loyal Lion
23 Jun 2008, 23:45
Just on Footy Classified. She's hinted that Eddie will make a big play for Browny again this year.

She is basing this around the time & delay's it is taking Brisbane to sign Browny up.

The "funny season" is starting earlier this year. Who else is out of contract at year's end ?

I watched it and saw NOTHING wrong with what Caro said. She said that with Rocca almost gone, Collingwood are more likely to go after Brown than how Mick has said "we won't touch him." She also added that Eddie would love to nail a big name player for once. Two things that are pretty much accurate.

She wasn't saying that Brown will go to Collingwood, but that Collingwood will see the "delay" in Brown's talks as an opportunity to make a play.

Yeah I thought what she said was legitimate. The longer JB takes to sign on the line the more interested some of the Melbourne clubs are going to become.

What she is saying makes sense. For christ sakes people will find fault in everything she does. Personally I'd rather a journo with a bit of spunk and not a bunch of yes-men like it is in WA. That's why I like to read stuff from Hamo, never fails to entertain.

Didn't bother me what she said.

It probably didn't bother me because I am extremely confident of Browny being a Lion for life.

Very relaxed about it.

can anyone name me one Brisbane Lions Player who has re-signed his contract during the season in the last 10 years. I cannot recall any and if there have been it must be a very very small number.

Mitch Clark
Luke Power
Browny the last time.

^^^ Leuenberger too.

But yes, when you consider that about 30% of all players are uncontracted at the end of each year, mid-year signings for any club are relatively uncommon.

He'll stay, at this stage he has made absolutely no indication that he is home-sick and/or wanting to come home for any reason. The only possible reason he has of coming home will be financial, and I have never perceived Browny to be greedy.

Its fun to read.

I like how half the people are Joffa sycophants who worship his every move, and the other half blame him for Collingwood losses and the behavior of the Collingwood cheer squad.

Then there is Dave the Man who is the Oscar Wilde of our time.

IMO Collingwood are smart marketers and publicity merchants by having an instantly recognisable person, that the supporters can connect with.He bleeds for that team and club.

IMO, thats not greed. Players have a very short span of time to make money from football, they are optimising their earnings for their futures. They are not in the workforce as a footballer, earning the big bucks for more than 12 years say.
A lot leave earlier due to injuries or deemed not good enough. A lot have no fall back plan, ie a uni degree or trade. Does Borwny have a degree or trade does anyone know? I can see Browny being a PE Teacher. lol.

To be honest that's just bad planning. To use a real world example, with the car factories slowly shutting down in Australia what happens when the last one goes? If you work there and plan ahead, you have a fall back plan. The same should apply to anyone who's work depends purely on their physical attributes.

Yeah, but these are young men, or boys even.
A lot during their time with us, are so focused in playing footy, fitness, and all that it takes to get on the field each week, that they dont think past that.

I really fail to see how Joffa is good marketing for the club. How could anyone see his antics and want to become a member? How could you say that people could connect with that? Surely he would only appeal to those who are already members and obsessed with the club.

Other young men are also young men. Playing footy shouldn't be a excuse not to think about things. To me that's just a common trait among young males (and I was certainly no different). Plus, most young guys don't have the luxury of a footy club and players association that are very vocal in promoting planning for life after footy. The upside is that they are still young and have plenty of time to readjust to new goals. Most should have the added benefit of a higher level of self-discpline than the next bloke.

exachary - and footy players should be planning ahead even more so than others planning a career as this is a career that has a limited lifespan, even if you are as old as Lynch, Harvey etc when you retire. The problem most footy players are up against is that they are so molly coddled and wrapped in cotton wool etc they have no idea about life in the real world. For example if I wanted to apply for a job in Perth it would be up to me to find accommodation etc etc, these boys rock up and a home is given to them on a plate be it with a host family, another player etc - admittedly some of them are very young when drafted and it is the clubs responsibility to a certain extent if they are being plucked straight from home.

But back on the subject of this thread JB is going nowhere. There will be tns of specualtion until there is an announcement that he has re-signed and the more we have threads like this the more credibility we have to those than have nothing better to do than speculate and fan the flames. What club in their right mind would not be keen to get JB - doesn't take a rocket scientist journalist to write an article or talk on radio and say xyz club will be throwing all they've got at JB to get him. It;s up there with those tat contribute nothing to dicsussions apart from stating the bleeding obvious like - I hope we win this weekend and that (insert player name) has a blinder.

TheBrownDog
25 Jun 2008, 13:21
Not sure how the thread ended up in this direction, but both clubs and the AFLPA (through ex-Don Steven Alessio) have extensive programs in place for players to expand their career prospects beyond football.

They did a segment on Totally Footy a few weeks ago showing the stuff the Lions do... its quite impressive.

Oh dear please keep Brown, I wouldnt want that team to have a gun player.

Especially as they "stole" Buckley from you!

In fairness though any champion player would be foolish not to go to the Pies especially with all the potential money that can and does come with endorsements and sponsorships etc.

The only problem I see for the Lions is that the Pies have room in their salary cap, do the Lions?

Not a problem with our veterans next year including Bradshaw, Notting and potentially Black (not 100% sure as it depends whether the roll-over is the beginning of the season or the end of the year). That'd probably be a decent chunk of salary cap released since only Lappin is there at the moment.

Interview Browny had with the good folk at Alpha Magazine last month.
He mentioned that the house he was building he hoped to have finished by August. Room or rooms in it for Kyle's massage business. Why do all of this and then leave?? Not a snowflakes chance in hell will Browny leave the Lions. Remember he was a Fitzroy supporter as a young lad.

Caroline Wilson is a speculative, gossip hungry journalist. She is another 'footy chick' trying to sound credible. She often gets her stories wrong. Perhaps someone should feed her false information;"Cloke to Richmond, Richardson to Collingwood!" I'm sure that would keep her distracted, as Browny signs on to stay a LION!:p

That is the funniest thing. :D

The scary thing is he is not alone. If it's a good player - Collingwood supporters offer Egan/Cox/Toovey/Lonie/Holland + 2nd rounder. If it's a great player - swap the 2nd round pick with a 1st round pick.

That imbicile has just offered the royal flush. :D

And lol at Dave the Man. I'm yet to meet another who offers as much entertainment as he does on a forum.

How the @!&$ will Carltoon get Brown ??? If they're generous, they'll offer us Wiggins & Carrazzo & their no. 7 draft pick! It's just ludicrous to even contemplate.

Rather than dealing with Carlton, the Lions would tell Brown to take his chances in the PSD. If he put a price on his head, I'm sure the WA teams or Melbourne would pay it.

Carlton have got no chance. Browny to stay a Lion.

Neither is Carlton. They won't be able to get the deal done.

Melbourne would be the only one to be able to get a deal done I'd reckon.

Pick 2 + Ricky Petterd at a bare minimum, and that wouldn't be enough for Brisbane.

The thing people ignore in this whole situation is the damage it would do to Brisbane if Browny left. For that very reason, they will ensure they retain him.

Browny will be a Lion. Have no doubt.

If Browny left Brisbane, with the Gold Coast coming in as well, I think it could set the club back 10 years, thats why I agree 100% that he will be a Lion, as I think the club would know as well that re sigining him is a must:cool:

I rang the club today and Browny answered the phone, he told me to press three to speak to membership and I was just about to ask him about his playing future.

Anyway, then he answered in the membership area, so I asked him directly "Hey Browny, are you going to stay at the Lions?" He wouldn't answer me directly, just told me to press one to speak to someone.

He was saying that "his source" had said that Collingwood had no interest in Fevola, but had told Brown that they would be willing to offer him a 5 year deal. Billy laughed at him and stated that Brown would remain a Lion.
