View Full Version : Huthcy - Footy Classified 23/06/08
Talk about muppets in the media.
Hutchy on Footy Classified last night...I was half asleep but when Garry Lyon asked him if he had rethought his statement to Peter Jackson last week saying we have no good kids under 25....Huthcy goes no, i stand by that.
Then Lyon puts him on the spot and asks him who would be Essendons best kid under 25...and he says Reimers.:rolleyes:
You'd think Stanton, Ryder, Houli, Winderlich, Davey and Dempsey may have been slightly ahead of Reimers at this stage...
I wonder if he actually watches any of our games.

Hutchy may be a tool but i think Reimers will end up being the best out of the 6 we took in the 2006 draft....:)
There are a couple of people on BB who can verify that i said that while we where watching training reasonably early last season ;)
I've stopped watching the footy show because of him (and Brayshaw)
Hutchy has no clue. It's unbelievable that he gets air time.
I for the life of me can't work out what this obsession we have on our board now about the media.
It seems every week now we have a thread about "Media guy X said this and that".
Why do people actually care?
Do you value their opinion?
If you don't then wouldn't you think it's a good thing they think we are crap?
Each to their own but i just don't get it.

Its not that we value their opinion as much, its just that they are the only people available to talk and print stories in the papers. Some people, i for one dont have behind the scenes access to information. The closest i can get is here. Most of the stuff written here on our board as well as other boards is rubbish too. You have to be able to filter it and determine the best outcome. Even that isnt full proof because your not always right. (Not meaning you, just in general).

I'm not at all concerned with them not rating our kids.
What worries me is these guys are paid commentators yet don't do enough research to make any judgments.
The only reason they said Reimers was because he's been in the news with his orange boots.
You'd expect if they were going to use it as a topic they might have done some background on it and listed the players and said something more. It just highlights how they make stuff up on the spot from what they have seen on the weekend.
Media standards are at an all time low.

I thought he said Neagle or was that Caro?

I agree 100% Hutchy is hopeless and the question he asked about Essendon highlighted his lack of research or wisdom. To leave Ryder, Gumbleton, Houli and Jetta from the discussion shows what a joke he is. He suffers a bit from the total tool syndrome the only questions worth answering are his own and he only values his thoughts. He helps kill the footy show as well

It was actually Archer who said Reimers after Hutchy asked him who is Essendon's best U25 player. The Lyon butted in and said Stanton would have to be the best, and Carro thought Neagle was showing a lot this year.
That was the end of the conversation, I think because they all knew nothing of our list and just mentioned a couple of players they had read about during the week.

I like how Caro said Neagle has been much more consistent this season considering he only played one game prior to it.

By more consistent I think she means. Getting onto the field.
I dont think she knows what she means.

Hutchy and the crew are supposed to be the best at what they do. They represent sports journalists all over Melbourne, and when they come out with tripe week in week out of course people are going to express their dissent.

I suppose i am just more used to it.
I expect it and hence don't take any notice or feel any outrage.
Quite the reverse actually i am really suprised when i hear educated opinion and outside the box thinking.
For mine Gerard Healy is the best by a mile and no one comes close.

Good point. I also like listening to Gerard Healy. However, if I had to choose one media commentator who i think really knows what he is talking about and gives well rounded comments, it would be Luke Darcy for me.

I agree, Bucks knowledge of the game and the current players (including the lesser known types) is fantastic. He provides good, insightful information and from what I have seen is always on the money.:thumbsu:

Yep, Luke Darcy is fantastic. However as he is new he is a little tentative to criticise players.

Of course media personalities are going to be discussed we are all passionate about our team and people feel the need to debate the comments made on our playes by these so called experts

I don't watch the show for quite a few reasons.
It's like they don't watch the game and only care about the controversy of the game.
Also I hate the woman on it, I feel like a sexist hating her.
merv, i agree we shouldn't live and die by these comments BUT i disagree that it is irrelevant. i think the wider problems that it creates could be (potentially):
lessens our ability to lure players to our club
for example.. if someone like chris judd is over in the west and only hearing how bad the bombers are and how long they are going to be at the bottom.. they may only see us play 1-2 a year.. so how are they to know different? then they 'hear' about carlton or richmond being on the up and think.. oh yeah that is where I would prefer to be. (of course this is stupid and wrong... but it COULD happen)
lessens our ability to draw sponsorship dollars
we assume that the marketing managers of companies are avid footy fans and as such would recognise crap media when they see it.. i know for a fact this is not true. they have all the stats about how many ppl watch this and that shows.. what % of club supporters.. how often players are mentioned etc etc etc.. hence why hawthorn is receiving a hell of a lot more attention this year than north did last year.. so if the media continues to denigrate our list it does nothing to help our brand
creates an air of negativity
this is more just the 'vibe' of the thing :). i am absolutely disgusted that on that panel there did not seem to be one person that could list more than 4 of our younger players.. just unbelievable really. and whilst I don't mind flying under the radar.. we have tended to overhype our players in the past (similiar to collingwood.. c tarrant anyone?!) but at the same time it is not going to lead to positive press and good headlines if the chief footy writer of the age doesn't even know our top 4/5 kids!!
so anyway i guess i just feel we can't assume that a regular bigfooty contributor is the a-typical footy supporter.. most ppl (unfortunately) aren't as passionate or have the time to waste on this thing :).. so they rely on the mass media for their information and i want that information to be fair and informed..
Yep, Luke Darcy is fantastic. However as he is new he is a little tentative to criticise players.

i pay attention to nathan buckley's every word. he never speaks for the sake of it (david schwarze), doesn't show any bias or unnecessary negativity (walls, hutchison, sheahan, wilson), isn't condescending (walls), and i'd say 95% of what he says actually adds to the coverage of the game.
i don't have paytv so never really got much of a chance to see healy, but i'm not much of a fan of his articles in the herald sun.

A big LOL to Hutchy who before Sunday wouldn't be even able to tell you any Essendon players under-25 let alone any decent ones.

Hutchy is a moron who thinks every story he 'Breaks' (and I use the word Breaks very loosely) changes the shape of the game. Don’t waste your brain cells thinking about him, better off drinking mentholated spirits, at least it's more palatable!

Hooray for Bucks, totally agree he is fantastic gives very measured commentary that actually adds to the viewing, apposed to self dignification(think I just made that word up) that most other journos and commentators seem to dribble.

No he's not. he didn't name any essendon player - he thinks none of them are any good, and probably can't name them anyway. he made a snide remark about who is going to lead the (supposedly said by Jackson) charge to the finals for us next year (he clearly doesn't think we can make it), then asked Archer to name our best under-25. Arch, put on the spot, just blurted out the kid who has had some publicity (reimers).
Hutchison also said "well we aren't going to say they're any good just because they beat carlton are we!?". Caro responded "well last week we were saying how promising Carlton now are..." Hutch " I DIDN'T!!" Caro: "yes you did. we all did...."
He also mentioned something else about essendon in general talk. Can't remember the context, but he said (paraphrase) "you never know with essendon" in a clearly smart-arse and derogatory way. For whatever reason, he is no fan of ours and will clearly attempt to cause strife at every possible moment.
The guy is a piece of dog ____. nothing more.

He's not a fan of Essendon because it was reported that when he first started out as an 'ambulance chaser', Kevin Sheedy invited him down to Essendon training one night. When all the players were sat down, Sheeds told Hutchy to come out the front. He then said that if any of the players were caught speaking to Hutchy that they would be axed from the club. :D

Does anyone actually respect Hutchy? You could tell that Caro, Lyon and Hutchy have very limited knowledge about of list, so who really cares?
