View Full Version : Who is Geelong's highest paid local footballer?
The Hulkster
25th June 2008, 10:43
Its an interesting question and can be a bit contentious because often figures are just rumour and i expect this thread to be slightly rumour based but often that isnt far from the truth.
But what i do know is that there are a lot of people getting paid very good money to play football around the Geelong area. Some of it well deserved some not.
So who's on what?

id say from what i've heard from good mail, marc dragicevic (st albans) plus he gets flown in from adelaide every weekend that would have him well over a G a week.

Mate a return flight booked in advance would only be costing the club about $120 return each weekend so depending on what sort of coin theyre giving him I cant see the problem especially if St Albans have Draga committed for next season. Although not ideal he can teach plenty on a Saturday for a start and then next year (if he's around) he steps up on the Tue and Thurs night also. In my opinion its all about what commitment he's made after this year.
Youre right its not the AFL but its the way country footy has been for years now. To my knowledge St Marys was flying Kane Purcell down from Qld when he was there and many other clubs have flown players in from interstate weekly also.

Good on St Albans for the Draga deal. Yes its a tad out of the ordinary but hey look at the big picture. A struggling club in a rebuilding phase has now on its books one of the best footballers going around. Will help with both recruiting and development of young players in 2009. My bet is 90% of the GFL teams would have taken Draga this year on this deal and the 10% who tell you they wouldn't are lying. :thumbsu::thumbsu::thumbsu:

There would be players on better than that a week. Is this payers only cos there are playing coaches out there that are getting some pretty decent coin.

It's a complement to the league that players want to travel to play in it.
It is only for 12 months though, draga is back in Geelong next year.

Your a tool Jay. Nobody said players at West are just playing for the love of it. Just said they are playing for a lot less than people think, due to pre-existing relationships with the club. As for the Gowans, speak to the Pres at st Albans. He will tell you he spoke to the twins last year and what they wanted. Somebody at the club has told half of Geelong

Recent premiership coach to answer the first question.
On the second, i distance myself a bit now from the inner sanctum at Ammos just a watcher now. But back when i was playing i know the top few were on around $400 a game. That was about 3 year ago. So i would think $400-$600 for those mentioned would not be out of the question. Too much in my book but thats what you have to do.

I'm a tool? take your blinkers off roosters everyone in geelong knows (except you) that your club is paying out bucket loads.
So now your listening to romours about what you heard what 3rd or 4th hand? your a goose and you can't handle anyone talking about your club if you don't agree with them.
maybe west should offer the Gowans $10,000 between them and come to the team of love, coz thats what counts!

Chubb (St Albans) 700
McLean (St Marys) 500
Carsons (west) 500
Saunders (west) 700
Scott (newtown) 500
Mitchell (ammos)600

Who is back at Portarlington this year... I'm led to believe that Paul was always going to have a crack at GFL level... and it didn't work out, but at least he saw out the season... (might have played in a two's flag?)
Leopold needs to position itself as the club for Peninsula clubs to send their players who want a crack at a higher level too...
Tim Marshall's a good story... but probably the only player who was successful in coming from a BFL club to have a crack at GFL level since LFC left in 1992 for the GFL is Justin Higgins... Brad Grills can be argued as he has won a Lions B and F...

When you look at the list you have, more than half those guys clubs wont be playing finals this year, you just wonder does it make sense to pay a fortune for 2 or 3 great players or spread that money arond 10 good players so you have a more even side and dont realy on individuals to win you games, when i use too play it use to take a team to win games, not a team off individuals.
