Again Ricky has had to do a job on a key midfielder, again he's been pantsed. From all accounts he was on Kerr last night, and whilst Kerr won a lot down back, I think it highlights that Laddo ain't a tagger. Who can we use as a tagger when Sewelly isn't in the side?? Timmy Clarke isn't in our best 22, so shouldn't be considered IMO, who else do we have that could carry this sort of job out???

P.S. - I rate Ladson as a player and he needs to play HBF

Yep we defiantely need a tagger like a ling or a rawlings.....

We seem to lack a tagger and a FB..............

Interesting point who is our number 2 tagger?

Had a few really good shows, was happy for him. If only had of taken his chances kicking for goal I would have been even more so. I was pleased to see Ladson not playing so much in the backline. He is another that could (should) step up if played on the ball more. Im really not the guys biggest fan, but I reckon he can and will change that. Fingers crossed he has a Sewell/ Bateman/ Ossie kind of year next year and really show his potential.
Tag wise last night, Sammy mentioned in the post matech interview that the Hawks were happy to let Kerr have as many possesions as he liked, as long as they were in the back half. Was it really so bad that they gave the guy the role when we were so short on options last night? Given the opportunity, surely the guy is going to improve given these sort of rolls, and what better opportunity against a gun player in a somewhat dead rubber of a game.

Our number 2 tagger is probably Tim Clarke.

We have several players who could do a blanket tagging job much better than Clarke. The only problem being, they are needed in other roles. I don't think any of us want to see Bateman in a tagging role. The only reason Brad Sewell is our first choice tagger is because early on he showed he could shut down opposition players. He is a game-breaking ball-winner, and if he had shown this aspect of his game first, we would never have heard of Sewell the tagger.

Campbell Brown could do a great tagging job on a dangerous forward who runs through the midfield.

Michael Osborne is the obvious choice to play on a defender who plays a lot through the midfield.

Xavier Ellis will probably be developed as a midfielder with a strong defensive game. Not quite a tagger, but a player who is expected to be accountable.

I think Mitch Morton would make a really good tagging midfielder.

Rick Ladson's main problem is his inability to win contested ball too often. It is essential for a tagger to be able to win contested football, as Cameron Ling does.

Perhaps, one of our problems this year has been the effect of the Cluster on our players. When the cluster is setup, most players don't have a direct opponent, just a zone to cover. As a result of this, our players are slowly losing man on man accountability skills. They are good at playing zone defence, but not at tagging or direct accountability.

Ladson is considered to be our best run with player as he has supposedly the biggest 'tank' in our team. Its probably his size that works against him in this area but you can't doubt his courage and effort. One week he is running with Richo man, last night Kerr...evidently the lad Morton will be moulded into this type as he has an engine. Wouldn't be to hard on Laddo, he tries his guts out.

Not trying to be harsh on him, but I think he provides us with plenty of run off the Half back Flank, and seems to get lost when playing as a tagger.

Maybe we should trade for him then ?

I think we should blood a youngster for the tagging role. Sewell is probably our best option, however he has become an elite midfielder on the back of some outstanding offensive work.

I would be giving the likes of Morton and/or Tuck the opportunity to play on the big names. Those two have the attributes (good sized midfielders, good pace, endurance & hardness as the footy/opposition) and it can only really help them to follow the best around and learn off them.

I just don't think we can afford to have a shoot-out in the midfield with a side like Geelong (Ablett, Bartel, Corey, Selwood, Chapman, etc.), especially when they will have a tagger like Ling shadowing Hodge or Mitchell.

usually plays back isn't a tagger & never will be played out of position! Morton has the tank to be a great tagger with Lewis Bateman & Sewell out it shows that covering these players is very hard to do will be great to Sewell & Bateman back after the break!:thumbsu:

Thomas Murphy should be developed into a tagger. He will need to build up his tank and increase his strength but I think he is the ideal type of player to be groomed in that role because if he gets taken to the goal square he can be an effective defender, and if he takes he takes his opponent forward he can be dangerous.

Someone who can't tackle should not be used as a tagger!

Ellis was on Kerr, 100% sure of it. Every time i saw him, he was about 3-4m behind Kerr...

As the title suggests Ladson is not a tagger....and he didn't tag last night. We play a midfield ZONE when the opposition has the ball, not one on one.

I thought he was pretty handy last night Laddo, uses the ball very well, and I think it's a good move making him part of the midfield rotation, espescially with Bateman and Sewell out and Lewis out of early in the 2nd quarter.

Kerr's 40 and Priddis' 45 disposals had nothing to do with Laddo and everything to do with our zone.

I think Morton would be good. Good tank, good mark and can hurt the opposition going the other way.

They put Rioli onto Kerr for a short period in the last quarter which was good to see.

Don't rate him as a player either unfortunately. Soft mentally for me, goes missing at key times during big games. Will need to show something come finals time, choked in the North game last year.

Hope he proves me wrong.

Finally, someone who understands Hawthorn.

Clarkson hasn't placed a hard midfield tag on anyone since the middle of last season.

He's already proved you wrong. In the Adelaide final. He certainly wasn't alone in having a shocker the week after.

Ladson does his job week in week out. This is one of the only threads about him this year and we are 12-2 and he hasn't missed a game. Inner circle stuff.

Would have thought Morton should be looking to replace Clarke.

Sewell is our only quality versatile tagger for mine.

I know Benny Mac is not tall. But he seems to have the pace, endurance and toughness to be a tagger. Could he be considered?
