I was just looking at our last 8 games and was very confident that we would make the finals... Until i saw this

These are our last 8 games

Essendon (TD) N
West Coast (G) N
Richmond (TD) N
Kangaroos (GCS) N
Hawthorn (AS) D
W Bulldogs (G) N
Carlton (G) N
Sydney (SCG) N

They reckon you need to win at least 12 games to make it into the finals and out of those 8 games I think 4 games we should be able to win but still there is some doubt lingering.

What are your thoughts?

I know we were horrible today, but I do feel that this is a little over-reaction at this stage.

There are plenty of others that jump at the chance to eat their own, I did not think we were one of them.

We'll definitely make the finals.
Wont be a meaningful finals campaign though. Also ran.

Yes we will. May even win a final. We're a long way back from the Dogs, Cats, Hawks and Swans though (and that was clear before todays game).

11 wins might be enough to make the 8 this year.

Amazing what a difference three hours makes. At 12 today I thought we were a chance of top 4. Now I am looking forward to getting a final or two into our young guys, but we really wont make a September inprint till 2009.

Anything can happen, time will tell. pointless trying to predict wins.

if we play like we did today we would be lucky to make the finals in the mornington peninsula league

This poll has got absolutely nothing to do with todays result, Even if we won today (which yes it would have been great) I think we have a very tough 8 weeks ahead of us in particular the last 4 games 3 of those 4 teams I feel will be in the top 4 at the end of round 22.

Unless this is a start of a general malaise (and I can't see it being just yet), we'll be in the Top 8. Depending on match-ups, we can make it to the second week and then probably lose to Hawthorn or Sydney.

Would this thread have started if we had of won today, or would the title be "Will we be in the top 4 at the end of round 22?"

I thought the doggies loss was bad, but today was far far worse IMO.

I couldnt agree more, the fact they've both come in the space of a few weeks is a real worry.

I don't know why people keep saying "not this year, but we will be a threat in a couple of years" or "we will be genuine flag contenders in a few years".

If today didn't show you we are nothing without Black and Power, I don't know what will. When they go we will be in a world of strife unless we somehow draft their replacements.

I know.A hard pill to swallow is the way we lost the games IMO.
Too few players who seem to be giveing over 50%.

Power and Brown were great today for us, as good as we had.
Too many others though were poor in application and intensity. But others have gone into those players/lets hope they freshen up over the break ( if Lethal allows them one lol), and we come out firing for the 2nd half of the season.

It was worse than the Doggies loss IMO Why? well I didn't expect us to beat the Doggies so it didn't hurt as much I did however expect us to beat Melbourne and when we didn't it just plain pissed me off We should have well and truly beaten the life out of the demons instead we went in half heartedly and got Beaten by the cruelest of margins 1 point.

The irony here though is IF we didn't get that interchange penalty that cost us 50 metres and a point against us the game would have been a draw.

We don't know that for certain... butterfly effect and all that. 1 point losses do funny things to the way we look at a game in hindsight.

After all the fuss and warnings about the interchange penalty rule,to infringe now is slack - losing to 2 teams that have only won 1 other game each all year is pretty slack - the kicking by the Lions overall this year signifies improvement is needed - better tighten up to have our best chance to make the finals from here - won't want to be waiting until round 22 to sew it up

I don't want to be one of those people who operate with a "i told you so" mentality.

But earlier on this year i said that our main concern would be how efficient our disposal is.

Our gameplan doesnt require a whole lot of the ball, often we win with less of the ball then the opposition. However, one of my main hates is seeing a player pass the ball short, 20 to 30 metres, to a player who has a 50 - 50 chance of marking it due to the pressure of a defender. These kicks achieve nothing, often the defender spoils the ball and it rebounds back with interest.

This problem is compounded when players think they have the ability to hit these targets with precision kicks when they haven't. Why not kick the ball 50 metres to a 50 - 50 contest instead of 20 metres when coming out of our defensive 50. It is important that each player knows their limitations.

Travis Johnstone and Colm Begley would be very useful in this regard, as well as the ability to kick goals. TJ coming off a half forward flank would have ment that Green couldn't get the easiest gig in the game as a loose player.

The fact Matthews took till the start of the 4th quarter to try and rectify his influence hurt us.

Overall, a poor day for the lions football club.

I thought that the weekend, and the game against the dogs, was an example of a fatigued and young squad.

I have been mightly impressed with the lads as a whole this year, we tend to forget how young the squad really is and i believe as a whole they have punched well above their weight division.

We are seeing the effect of having Lappin out and TJ missing, TJ was brought in because the coaching staff knew that the squad wasnt mature enough physically or mentally for the rigours of an AFL season, having both those guys out is massive.

We really needed this break, it would have been great to go in with a win but we hopefully we can come back out refeshed and recharged for a tilt at the finals.
