One of the worst things you can do at a football club is let players go without giving them a real opportunity to prove themselves. A lot of people will say that Murphy and Campbell have had plenty of chances, but in the last 2 years they haven't had enough chances to play as the 2nd key forward alongside Pav.
When they play they become the 4th option in the forward line behind Pav, Tarrant and Farmer and it makes it impossible for them to play their natural games as leading forwards. Just look a Boyle at Hawthorn a good footballer who this year is struggling because he is the 4th option behind Franklin, Roughead and Williams.
Against Geelong in the Anzac game our forward line worked the best because there was no Tarrant. Murphy had his best game since 2006 and proved he was good forward option. Of course next week Tarrant was rushed back against Melbourne and Tarrant gave up in the 2nd half as Melbourne came back and Murphy didn't have the ball kicked to him once.
With the excellent Mayne becoming our leading forward he can take over Tarrant's role from last year working up the field. What we need now is someone inside 50 to kick goals and take the pressure off Pav. That has never been and never will be Tarrant. He got beaten yesterday by Lovett Murray hardly an elite defender and if Tarrant does get it he can't kick, that effort in the 1st quarter when he hit the post from right in front was pathetic.
With 8 eight games left lets give Murphy and Campbell a chance, drop Tarrant and give him the rest of the year off so we can use him as trade bait because he is not the future of Fremantle.

Campbell maybe - but only Scott Thornton gets more chances than Murphy. Murphy is a spud.

Agree. Murphy had plenty of chances and simply hasn't used them. He kicked 2 goals so far this season in, how many games? Tarrant isn't exactly go-to man in our forward line either, yet he works his arse off and manages to kick goals.
He's one of those good WAFL players, unfortunately.

The truth of the matter is Tarrant has heaps more influence on a match than Campbell or Murphy...
dont bowl there

Tarrant is in some pretty good form at the moment how some people cant see that amazes me. If we are to challenge for a flag in the next couple of years we will need Tarrant.

There's so much wrong with this it's not funny.
1. Tarrant has a FOUR year contract. If we traded him, we'd be footing the bill for another two seasons.
2. Tarrant is MUCH better than Campbell and Murphy. Let's look at some statistics shall we?
2008 averages
Tarrant: 9 kicks, 4 handballs, 6 marks, 1.5 goals, 2 tackles
Murphy: 5 kicks, 4.5 handballs, 3.5 marks, .5 goals, 1 tackle
Campbell: 4 kicks, 3 handballs, 1 mark, no goals, 1 tackle
It would seem that Tarrant is worth Murphy and Campbell put together, and a little more. The Tarrant bashing has to stop. He hasn't always been what we wanted but his workrate is exceptional. I think I'd be in the majority here in thinking that his last 6-8 weeks have been his best for Freo.

100% agree. If you watch him on the field i'd say he covered more ground than almost anyone on the field. Long leads and his kicking seems to have improved alot recently. He has been great for us the last couple of games.

I'd say that the addition of Mayne has shown us just how much Murphy and Campbell aren't really up to it. I say we keep Taz in and if Murphy or Campbell want to stay around, then make them earn it. I haven't seen too much to suggest they really want it, though.

He's certainly not worth 400k a year though.

Jetau those 2008 averages you posted are a waste of time. In my original post I made the point that Murphy and Campbell need the chance to play as the 2nd key forward with Tarrant out of the team, those averages were with Tarrant in the team getting in their way.
We need to get our forward line structure right for the future. I think the best combination is
Murphy Pavlich Farmer
Headland Mayne Brock O'Brien
Mayne as the leading forward, Pav as key target 1 inside 50, Murphy key target 2, Farmer small forward, Headland a forward who can roam (injuries may prevent him playing as a full time midfielder) and Brock as the defensive small forward who can also play in the midfield.
The only role I can see Tarrant taking is the lead up forward but Mayne is will take this role for the next 10 years. The 2nd key target inside 50 must be taken by someone who can kick straight and have a physical presence much like Bradshaw or Roughead.
Tarrant got beaten by Lovett Murray, he can't kick for goal and is mentally weak so he is no good. We can either give Murphy or Campbell a go or trade Tarrant somewhere and whatever we get for him use it to get Boyle from Hawthorn who can play and give us that target inside 50.

why do people bag tarrant so much? he does alot of good things, he takes the 2nd bst defender and leads hard all day despite most kicks going to pav. He has good hands and while his kicking on goal is average his field kicking is pretty good. Nowhere near our worst

And the stats don't tell the whole story either. The work rate of Tarrant compared to Murph is a stark contrast. Tas is always on long leads, creating a target and his delivery into the F50 has been good. Murph hardly moves and expects it delivered to him on a platter in the goal square. Similar when he's in the wafl too. Oh and Murph's conversion this year 2 goals 7 behinds at 22% compared with Tarrant's 16 goals 8 at about 67%.
How people still think Murph deserves chances is beyond me.

The reason Pav is kicking so many goals this season [well on target to top the 72 last year] is because Taz is playing his own game so well.
although I agree Campbell needs more game time, I feel Murph has had countless opportunities, since being drafted, to prove himself.
Unfortunately for Murph, he is too good for the WAFL; if only he could tackle, sheperd, work hard around the forward half, present options and give 100% every week like Tarrant , then I might be able to take this thread alittle more seriously.
Murphy for Tarrant.Pfffttt!!
I still don't understand why Tarrant can't play on a Wing. It's done wonders for Richo, taken the pressure of his goalkicking, got him into the game more. He seems made for the job with his athletic attributes.

i'm sick of all this tarrant bashing aswell, like yes in the beginning of the year he wasnt doing too well.. but going back to the WAFL done good for him and i went to both of those games and he done really well at WAFL level.
then we brought him back into the side and he had his best game ever since being at freo.. and now he is kicking at least 2 goals a game and getting at least 14 or so posessions. i admit i do like Murph and Campbell aswell.. but Taz is a really great player and he works really hard
