Big Picture
New Zealand can't quite begin their long journey home yet, and with the taste of victory champagne still fresh following the series victory at Lord's on Saturday they now have two ODIs in Aberdeen, the first of which is against Ireland. It is a chance to give a few of the players who have watched from the sidelines recently a run, although New Zealand will be guarding against any embarrassing slip-ups. For Ireland it's the start of a busy summer, which also includes important Twenty20 qualifiers plus a host of ODIs. Since their magical World Cup campaign they have struggled to reach those heights again as amateur players are torn between cricket and their jobs, while those good enough for professional careers are snapped up by counties. Ireland are missing three key personnel - Niall O'Brien, William Porterfield and Eoin Morgan - for that reason, while Jeremy Bray, David Langford-Smith, Trent Johnston and Boyd Rankin are also unavailable. But this a chance for some others to make a name for themselves.

Watch out for

Ross Taylor He struggled against England, often found out by seam and swing and sometimes by his own impetuosity. He is still the most talented of New Zealand's young top order and the lesser attack of Ireland could be right up his street.

Kyle McCallan Now leading Ireland in the absence of Trent Johnston, McCallan is a hardworking offspinner who isn't afraid to give the ball a tweak. He enjoyed some fine moments during the World Cup. In 25 ODIs his economy rate is 4.25 so he can't be underestimated.

Team news

New Zealand have named a 12-man squad and will make at least three changes from the final ODI against England. Jamie How, who has played for much of tour with a cracked finger, is rested so James Marshall gets another chance at the top of the order, while Scott Styris - who was Man of the Match at The Oval and Lord's - also sits out. Kyle Mills gets a match off so Michael Mason is in the squad as is offspinner Jeetan Patel, who hasn't featured in any internationals to date on the trip.

Without the three county-based players, Ireland have had to draft in reinforcements but Gary Wilson, the wicketkeeper, is on Surrey's books while Alex Cusack won a Man-of-the-Match award on his debut against South Africa last year.

Stats and trivia

These two teams have only met in one previous ODI, during the 2007 in Guyana (http://content-aus.cricinfo.com/statsguru/engine/match/247492.html), when New Zealand came out on top by 129 runs. Daniel Vettori took 4 for 23.

Only two Ireland players who appeared in that game are in the squad for Tuesday's match. McCallan and Andrew White are the survivors to show the upheaval Ireland have been through.

Quotes

"It's been a long tour. But there's no way we want to leave Scotland being beaten. It'll be a hard couple of games, but there's no way we'll treat them as any less important as any other one-day international."

Jamie How confirms New Zealand won't be taking the next couple of matches lightly

If only it could've been worse that Mick Lewis. :(

I was thinking the other day if that'd ever be broken.

no captain is stupid enough to give a guy a full 10 overs if they are going at 11+ per over :D

and that was McCullum - 166 out of 266!

Would have comfortably made 200 if he could have seen out 50 overs.

Scotland look to home advantage

There has always been rivalry between Scotland and Ireland, and not just in cricket, but this has intensified in recent years as both strive for the next rung on the international ladder. Ireland consider themselves as the better of the two teams at the moment, as they reached the Super Eights at the last World Cup and are on the ODI table, but they have lost several key players since then and will face today's match with some trepidation, especially since they are away from home.

Neither team in fact are at full strength, but Ireland in particular are weak in bowling at present, as New Zealand showed yesterday. Peter Connell is perhaps their main bowling hope, while the key players are the batting all-rounder Andre Botha and the captain Kyle McCallan.

Scotland are without the injured Craig Wright, and their key players are the bowling all-rounder John Blain and their Zimbabwe-born captain, Ryan Watson.

Both teams will, in a sense, be playing in foreign conditions. The sun is shining down at Mannofield Park in Aberdeen and the pitch is dry and should provide plenty of runs. Ireland, on winning the toss, decided to play to their strength and the conditions, and bat first.

Scotland Gavin Hamilton, Ryan Watson (capt), Qasim Sheikh, Colin Smith (wk), Fraser Watts, Neil McCallum, Richard Berrington, John Blain, Gorden Goudie, Glenn Roberts, Dewald Nel.

Ireland Reinhardt Strydom, Gary Wilson (wk), Paul Stirling, Andre Botha, Andrew White, Ryan Haire, Andrew Poynter, Kyle McCallan (capt), Gary Kidd, Peter Connell, Thinus Fourie.

Scotland bat in series 'decider'

The final match of the tri-series at Mannofield Park in Aberdeen brings together, appropriately enough, the two winning teams in what equates to a final. However, so powerfully did New Zealand come across against Ireland that it is almost inconceivable to imagine them losing even to a Scottish side playing as impressively as they did yesterday. But, as Scotland's coach Peter Steindl said, "You can never say never."

Certainly Scotland should be able to push New Zealand harder than the depleted and disappointing Irish did. They have a useful array of bowlers, especially in the seam department, and their top-order batting has made good progress this year. They have their sights set on the next World Cup and know how much good an impressive performance, even if victory seems highly unlikely, against New Zealand would be.

The weather has reverted to dull and overcast, but at the start of play at least the wind was low. Sadly, a crowd of no more than two or three hundred is expected; local intelligence says that only the big teams - India and Pakistan (attracting the local immigrant population), or England or Australia - draw significant crowds in Scotland. A man in the street felt that the matches had not been well promoted.

New Zealand won the toss and put their hosts in to bat. The onus is on the newly confident Scottish batting line-up to post a testing total for the visitors.

Scotland 1 Gavin Hamilton, 2 Ryan Watson (capt), 3 Navdeep Pooniah, 4 Colin Smith (wk), 5 Qasim Sheikh, 6 Neil McCallum, 7 Richie Berrington, 8 John Blain, 9 Dewald Nel, 10 Gordon Goudie, 11 Glenn Rogers.

New Zealand 1 Peter Fulton, 2 Brendon McCullum (wk), 3 Ross Taylor, 4 Scott Styris, 5 Daniel Flynn, 6 Jesse Ryder, 7 Jacob Oram, 8 Daniel Vettori (capt), 9 Tim Southee, 10 Mark Gillespie, 11 Michael Mason.
