View Full Version : No real scrutiny after Saturdays loss...
I can't help but think about how Polly's tragic accident on Saturday night has in-effect, diverted a lot of attention away from our very poor performance on Saturday against The Blues.
Quite correctly after such a tragic incident, everyone focuses on life, health and those things that are most important outside this game we love.
This is all very proper & justified but...
Had that tram not been where it was, I reckon there would be a lot more media scrutiny this week on TW, The Club & the players after the horrible result at the MCG.
It wasn't as if we fell away against The Cats down in Geelong or The Swans up here in the SCG bog...
This was OUR special day, infront of a big home crowd at the "G"... infront of Tiger hero's of the past... against traditional rivals & with some-sort of push on to finish close to the 8!
In a somewhat quiet AFL week with only 2 games to come next weekend, I reckon the press would have been full of analysis, scrutiny and some justified criticism.
As often happens after being put under "The Blowtorch", teams come out in the following week and kick some arse.
Sometimes the only consolation from putting in a shocker is the resulting "soul searching", "players taking a good hard look at themselves" and other associated crap cliches that do however make a difference.
So as the players & coaches try to come to terms with what has happened to their team-mate and continue busting their arses in the comming weeks... have they also perversely dodged a bullet?

It will just be deferred and players will be feeling rattled over Saturday nights events. It was a bad one but now time has passed I want scrutiny over the entire four years and have people seriously question things that are not happening.
They have West Coast and Essendon and there will be nowhere to hide if we lose one of those.
At the end of the year is really where the scrutiny will matter. Press this week wont really force decisions that matter.
Im more interested in what they do at the end of the year.
It will be interesting to see if they make any hard decisions or just make the easy expected ones.

There has been a little bit.
It's more of a 'we're over the Tigers' type scrutiny.
We were promising up until the Sydney game, Adelaide flogged us as well, then we won a couple easy games, all of a sudden we're on the big stage again, 4 points out of the eight and we cough it up.
Same old Richmond, they're pretenders, that's what they're saying.

Couldn't agree more.
Saturday was a watershed loss, which will see a lot of supporters unconvinced and not attending too many more games.
Do you blame them?
The reality is we have made little or no progress in four years and lose whenever there is a glimmer of hope for finals or the game has anything riding on it.

Why is any scrutiny needed anyway?
I'm 100% sure the players, coaching staff and entire club would be disappointed with the loss on Saturday. We don't need some 'journos' writing up garbage jut to sell a few papers.
Well done to TW and the coaching staff for refocusing the side towards their next important encounter, rather than worrying about the past :thumbsu:

really, what was surprising about it? we did what we always do. i for one hoped that saturday would mark the turnaround. but it didnt and we move on and await another (hopefully not false this time) dawn.

This is getting old Peter. Being positive is one thing, this is just taking the piss. Another meaningless 'Well done' to TW. To be honest I want them to worry about the past, they need to learn from that game on the weekend, or the loss was pointless. They need to worry about that happening again, otherwise it WILL happen again.
This brings me to my next question, you congratulate TW so much it leads me to this question:
Are you Terry Wallace?

They're the ones who give us 'real' supporters a bad name. Just like the cliched 'snow-going Demons.' They can jump off if they want but they won't feel the true joy of success that the 'stickers' will feel when we're up there again.

Agree - surely the players don't read the papers - what a waste of energy that would be. "Oh no, Mark Robinson slagged us off. I better try harder next game."
It only matters what the coaching staff demand, not what anyone else says.
Slightly off topic just for a second, but given the unfortunate accident on Saturday night and now that we're out of finals contention, is now the time to play Rance in Polak's position for the rest of the year? Especially with McGuane out and Thursty being a late withdrawal on Saturday, it just seems like it's the perfect time to chuck the big fella in and give him the exposure he needs to be prepared for next year.
As for the original post Roachy, I think you're right. Had it not been for Polak's accident, I think we would've been under a lot more scrutiny this week. Then again, as Smithers said, maybe the press are just over us now after pumping us up and then we burn them.

I think we are lucky to escape criticism but rightly so because of the situation. Another positive is that Andy Collins can go about his business and prepare for his debut against West Coast with out the media jumping all over him like they would of had it not have been Graham's accident
Best of luck to Polak and to Andy for the oncoming weeks

Stickers? How long can one stick? They simply can't keep serving up this crap year in year out with no upside.
They don't deserve our support.

The delistment of Tivendale, Hyde and Pettifer are the easy decisions. Hardly clever list management required to trim in that department.
The hard ones are whether to make to try and salvage something for Tambling.

Stawbs, you know better than this
The only time this club ever gets off its ars and does anything is when supporters start taking wooden spoons to the games, or some self serving ____ wit like Mal Brown slags the board off in public.
The rest of the time they sit around convincing themselevs everything is going swimingly Peter Suckmyass style. Or they're simply downing too many beers in the social club and dont care

Agreed. Tme for hard decisoin regarding Tambling. Drop him for a start then delist the spud.
JON and Meyer to go as well. They don't want to admit they have made mistakes with picks that were all top 20.
It would be intersting to see if any other clubs would be interested in any of them?
Remember Tw saying that JON would "silence his critics" this year?"
LMAO!

Meanwhile, back at the halfway house, resident troll and allround legend in his own lunchtime "The Snag" continues on his "Keep Richmond White" campaign...

Was a dissapointing result considering it was a significant day, but as you stated the focus was rightly on Graham Polak's health.

Peter Sasse Graum is almost singlehandedly driving the second nail in TW's coffin. The first being the loss to Carlton after his "line in the sand" comments.
Wallace should be banned from the media.

Totally agree.
We don't need supporters who bag the club when things are tough, then jump on the bandwagon when things are going well.
These are the supporters who give us a bad name, not the ones who stick through the Tigers regardless of how they are travelling
This is why we are fortunate that things have now changed at Richmond, and a new level of professionalism has been introduced.
Well done to TW and the whole off-field team at Richmond for having the tenacity to enforce change, and make the Tigers a truly professional sporting organisation :thumbsu:

Amazing the level of professionalism TW and his team has implemented.
Most of our players can't be allowed to go out on the weekend without a chaperone - and that includes our captain.
Communication on and off the field is still non-existent.
Deep inside 50 or on the Dandenong Rd trolley tracks Hughes, McMahon and Polak still didn't bloody talk.
Totally agree.

Yeah we need supporters that are happy losing games and winning wooden spoons.
Well done to TW and the whole off field team for losing to Carlton in a game they declared a line in the sand.
Well done to Peter who enjoyed losing to Carlton and thinks it showed we have progressed.

yes indeed, well done to the max. BTW, who was the professional that had the players wearing moulded soles in the wet in Sydney?
who was the proffesional that allows them to travel with one pair of boots?
well done for enforcing change my arse...;)

I'm not sure where you get your first point from- we've already won more games this year than on 07, and will not win the spoon.
Fatigue cost us the game against Carlton, the players looked like they ran out of legs.
Losing to Carlton is hardly the kind of measuring stick that should be used to determine if we've improved.
Well done to TW and the coaching staff at Richmond for intorducing solid measurables to encourage the players and ensure the side improves :thumbsu:

We arent going to be playing finals this year. Carlton may well do so, thanks to our roll over last weekend.
Players ran out of legs is one of the greatest indictments on a coaching team in modern footy.
In language you understand; Well done to TW and the coaching team for having the boys fighting fit for 3 quarters of the game.

We are building towards having a team that will be consistantly pushing for finals, as TW stated when he as appointed.
Nobody in the media is scruitinising this because they can see that the plan is on track. The Tigers have improved, and now have a talented young list complemented by stron senior players providing great leadership.
The kind of list that is the right mix for long term success
Well done to TW and the team for crafting and developing a quality list of players that will ensure the Tigers long term on field future :thumbsu:

How many of our current senior players will play in a final? None this year.
Will Pettifer and Hyde still be on the list next year? Will Johnson? Will Bowden?
If you'd kept your posts to the talented young list, you'd have some legitimacy. The fact you consider our senior players as necessary and great leaders makes you a figure of fun.
But you already know that. You've been acknowledging this week that no-one could have predicted our senior players would fall away so quickly.

Well, it's unlikely that any of our players will play finals this year, as we'll most likely miss out.
Not sure who'll still be on the list next year, there are still a few games left for the players to be assessed on.
The club will then site down and work on who to keep and who to delist.
Well done to TW and the rest of the off-field team for continually assessing our list, and pruning it in a way that ensures every spot at Richmond is well earned :thumbsu:

You're really TW's mum, aren't you?
Either that or you're the Tooth Fairy...
Well done to you for praising TW for anything & everything!
Just to revisit this from a different perspective...
This split round is really giving me the shits!
Normally after a bad loss, (and let's not kid ourselves, last Saturday was a BAD loss), I feel gutted, hate life & everything for a few days but at least by about Wednesday the following week, I am looking forward to seeing how the club reacts.
I look forward to Thursday afternoons team selection to see who get's the chop & perhaps which young kid may get a chance to debut.
I look forward to see how we respond on the field, to see if we can atone for the previous weeks poor show.
I FEEL RIPPED OFF THIS WEEK!
1st) Last Saturday really was a massive opportunity for the club to make a statement about the future, on a very special day for The Tigers. Hell... you don't celebrate your 100 years every week! We absolutely blew a massive opportunity.
2nd) No chance this week to self-flagelate, get the negativity out of the system and look forward to this weekend with reniewed optimism. We are just floating around in some sort of split-round neverland at the moment...
Is it just me?
