View Full Version : Port Melbourne v BENDIGO BOMBERS

CrowdedHouse
3 Jul 2008, 13:31
As you guys know, there is NO AFL in Melbourne this weekend and there is only ONE VFL Game on the Saturday - the rest being on the Sunday.

So all the focus this Saturday will be on the Port Melbourne v Bendigo game at TEAC Oval, Port Melbourne.

TV Coverage: ABC1 Live from 1pm
Radio Coverage: 3XX 1611 AM Live from 1pm (maybe 87.9 FM at the Oval)
Internet Stream: www.doublex.com.au

If you are thinking about going but have never been to TEAC Oval before:

Take any train to the city and hop off at Southern Cross or Parliment Stations.

Walk to Collins Street and jump on the 109 Port Melbourne Tram.

After 10-15 mins hop off at the Northport Tram Stop, and on the platform walk back towards the city - at the end of the platform turn left, cross the tracks and keep heading in that direction.
The Ground should be about two blocks away.

So get along and support the Bombers this weekend in the VFL.

I reckon with that lineup, Houli and Slattery will be the ins against Brisbane. Dyson and someone else will go out for them. Unless the Bendigo Bombers lineup doesn't make a difference?

Houli will have not played a game in 5 WEEKS now. Put a line through him for Brisbane.

Whats the bet he ends up going in for groin surgery?

Houli is a 20/80 chance of being fit for Brisbane at best.

He is battling OP and has been since pretty early on on the season.

It is not a simple groin strain as reported by the club.

Mal Michael has been exploited far too much in the 2nd term. Zoning off far too much .

Hooker looks ok once again. Showing something.

Dyson needs to take hold of this game. He should be a step above everyone on the ground.

Williams is very quiet. Good solid spoil late in the 2nd.

Pears playing ok across half back.

Hislop and Hocking a bit quiet coming back from injuries, hopefully they find the ball a bit more after half time.

Chartres hasn't done too much.

I see Magin around the packs a fair bit but doesn't get much off it.

Bellchambers killing the Port guy in the ruck. Although not really doing anything around the ground.

Finally, the Messiah looked alright in the 1st qtr. VFL is definately his level.

Forget about the lack of things he has actually done for Essendon, he tries his heart out more than anyone i've ever seen, and really feel for Courtney Johns right now. He has limitations but i have never seen someone work so hard for his team, and he really must be hurting right now, knowing his career is probably over.:(

On the note of the game, Michael and Chartres have been shocking, Dyson has been pretty good, very good in that 2nd quarter, and hasn't had a large amount of the ball, but impressed with Hocking, Hislop as well. Hooker a bit quiet, but when he goes near the ball he knows what he's doing, looks a natural foward.

Atkinson is also playing well. He always does something with the ball when he has it. Set up Bendigo's first goal with a great run through the centre of the ground and a great kick to Hartigan, who has played well also.

I haven't seen anyone look quite so devastated as Johns after that injury :( He lay on the ground, and punched the turf about 5 times really hard; you could sense the frustration and despondence. He had his head covered as he came off the ground on the stretcher, he was just shattered. Very sad.

In brighter news, Dyson looks ok today. Kicked an absolutely enormous goal from well inside the centre square. Was kicking with the wind, but it went 70 easy and cleared goal line hitting the fence. Tried another one shortly after that went nearly as far, but was just off line

5 Jul 2008, 17:08
Hislop and Hocking both played fairly well with Hislop probably in Bendigo's best. Hocking just needs more game time. Bellchambers did well in the ruck, but needs to improve around the ground. Pears was solid as was Magin and Hooker while Williams was fairly quite. Mal was very average today (maybe an injury?) while Atkinson was very good and was probably Bendigo's best. Hartigan and Skipworth were probably the best of the vfl listed players.

Bendigo is doing an admireable job considering the team that runs out week after week is one of the youngest in the VFL, and generally plays against teams with much more experience across the board.

I think today Bendigo have something like 12 players who have under 20 games of VFL/AFL experience - and most of them haven't played together for any decent periods of time.

:eek::eek::eek:

I think the exact opposite...

Who would you rather:

Johns.... Has been known to be very S__t at (Crucial) times in many games. He doesn't have 1 real spot on the field that he's really good at. He's had hip injuries, Hamstring Injuries and now has a Knee injury added onto his list... Unless he pleads his case well enough to knighta at the end of this year, then I dont see him been at the bombers next year... Well at least not the seniors.

Lee.... Hasn't been given many chances at all under Sheedy (only a few senior games). Can play back, forward, as a utility on the Wing, pretty much anywhere... His only real injury worry would be his shoulder, which left him out for this half of the season:(, but still its not as big as CJ's.

I guess tomorrows tests on CJ will define his future... If its season ending (as predicted) then it would have to pretty much be, bye bye Courtney.

Lee has no more upside than Johns. The fact that Lee has not had many games for Bendigo where you could walk away and say yes he really made a difference in this game says it all. He has done stuff all when he has been able to get on the park.

VFL makes no difference at all...

If you actually watch VFL, its like watching U12's footy.

Nearly every AFL Listed player who plays in the 2's will only put in 50%.

Mal Michael got 5-6 goals kicked on him yesterday.
Jay Neagle, before he got selected for seniors, kicked 0 the week before in the VFL.
Jason Johnson, yeah he gets a hell of a lot of the ball, but his work ethic is terrible in the VFL.
Scott Gumbleton, bearly lifts a finger, but somehow gets 3 goals a game.

Getting to my point, getting sent to play in the VFL is pretty much an insult to most AFL players, why should it be any different for Lee, so what he doesn't get as many BOG's as most players, I wouldn't put in 100% either if I were sent down to play depressing footy.

What games have you watched? That whole post is a pile of tripe. Mal had been very good up until yesterday. Nobody could ever question JJ's work ethic, his skills let him down, that is all. Did you not see Gumby backing into packs to make a contest after missing all year with injuries, he was more focused than any other player on the ground.

Lee hasnt played a senior game in 2 years, hardly qualifies as an insult for a veteran of 5 matches to be playing VFL. Do you have any idea on how Lee plays from watching him or are you just making it up?

All I know of Johns is that as soon as the all hits the ground, where it spends probably more time than anywhere else, Johns may as well not be out there. His ball handling skills are not good, he lumbers around the ground like a dinosaur and doesn't even have anything resembling an AFL level second effort. I am sorry he has hurt his knee, as it's never anything you'd wish on someone, however he does not deserve a spot on our list and should be delisted come end of the year. Show him the door.

Andrew Lee.....I think the fact he's been around so long and yet never really even been able to get a look in, even this year when guys like Atkinson are getting chances, can pretty much tell you he's not up to it.
Again, please show him the door to allow for opportunities elsewhere.

U12s hey? That means the WAFL must be at about U9s level?..... hey! i coach an U9s team. Does that mean I could caoch a WAFL side???

I wouldn't have thought any one would take the exaduation so seriously...

It helped make my point, if you need an explanation.

Just a point, not really defending Johns or Lee but more guys like lonergan, neagle and gumbleton.

I actually remember a long time ago, just when Mark Johnson started playing AFL, he said something along the lines of it was almost easier to get a kick in AFL because others around you are more skilled.

Of course it's harder and faster then VFL but the skills of others around you can make it more difficult to play VFL then some areas of AFL.

If Dyson plays seniors this week I will be bitterly disappointed. Did nothing but stuff around and handball at peoples feet, lost count at the amount of times he squibbed a contest (first qtr especially).

I agree, I never want to see him in the seniors again.

I watch the game mainly because I want to see him dominate but was dissapointed AGAIN. It was a poor showing from a player that is struggling to get into the team. Just dosn't seem to work hard enough to be a outside runner (Stanton type) and is too weak minded and bodied to go and get his own footy.

You'd think that a bloke who was the last person drafted (or about that) in a national draft would consider themselves lucky of a chance to live their dream and therefore do whatever it takes to ensure they became a truly respected footy player. That being said, you can't bag him too much as he's never really had the ticker nor the skill. Clearly the late pick was justified and a bit of a gamble.
