This weekend the Burgers are taking on the hapless Box Hill Hawks. Should get up with an easy win. Great to see Coughlan making a return in the 3rd's

Seniors line up

B Howat Silvester Meyer
HB Pettifer Rance Collins
C Tivendale Caruso Raines
HF Horne Schulz Edwards
F Oakley-Nicholls Connors Polo
R Cartledge King Shelton
Int Corr Clifton Carnell
Putt Carrick Graham
McErlain Keogh

Reserves line up

B Davis Smith Vasilevski
HB McErlain Gourdis Robertson
C Casserly Coughlan Collard
HF Rayson Putt Simpson
F Clifton Currie Gazzo
R Foster Corr Caruso
Int Jordon Cattapan Trajkovski
Riddle Jones Farrelly
De Sousa Abdallah

That Coburg seniores line up looks very impressive. Casserly running in the 3rd's is a bit perplexing, clearly Collard isn't going to be elevated anytime soon. Polo and King are the only Richmond players playing who played last week. I reckon Johnson and Thursty (if he's right) should have had a run around this week (Johnson looked real propy last week)

With at least 2 or 3 changes this week, all players particully Silvester and Rance will be looking to impress

Only RFC players not playing:
- McGuane
- Thurstfield

Collard and Casserly getting fitness in him by the looks... smart move. Nothing to be concerned with. 10/12 rule. We will elevate a ruckman by seasons end.

Should be a good game. Box hill are starting to get a few more senior players back - obviously nothing like 10/12 but we should have a solid half-dozen "Good VFL" players in.

Hopefully the midfields come out relatively even so we get a good look at Dowler & Thorp v Rance & Shulz

Is that Jake King? If so it could be a battle of the mighty midgets....McGlynn v King.

(Hope it's not K3 - he'd just about kill him).

I remember hearing a recruiter say that there are a lot of tall forwards out there as juniors because not many players want to play in the backline.
this is apparently why mainly kpp forwards get drafted and then they try and turn them into backmen, apparently Rance and Tate Pears were two exceptions to the rule

The 12/10 rule only aplies against non-affiliated teams.

Therefore against Box Hill there is no limit to the amount of Richmond players that can play.

Questioning our coaching?

It's common for young KPFs to be trained down back early in their careers. Teach them how defenders try to cut off your leads, increase their defensive qualities, test how committed they are to the team (by learning a difficult position that is less enjoyable) and most of all making them more versatile and useful so if they're not doing well up forward they can be switched down back.

Or you could let them rot in the reserve's forward line and not develop their game at all, whichever method you prefer

In Dave's case he was not picked up in the ND. He was always a project player. Our coaches saw his strengths (elite pace, agility and aerial skills) to be a good fit for the backline, so we picked him in out of the leftovers bin as a project.

Hughes had training down back and he's bobbed up okay.

Maybe they are throwing him down back as a learning curve.

He obviously knows how to play as a forward, but maybe they want him to see what his opponent is thinking to assist in his development.

Gourdis down back...

There was a good reason the guy slipped so far in the draft ( many rated him a 1st rounder ).

Yes, he's a decent size, has very sticky hands, is seriously quick ( not just for his size ) and athletic, but he has one tiny flaw which is particularly notable as a forward...his kicking is 'iffy'...Woeful tecnique, and while on a set shot it seems to work OK, when he needs to kick 'quickly' it's not a pretty sight. He really needs to be taught to kick again from the ground up.

So what do you do with a quick, athletic big man who can't kick? Stick him in the back line.

Hopefully, he'll improve his kicking and become a great KF, but if not, then that speed and athleticism will mean he'll be getting a lot of spoils in down back. ( and, as top 4 tiger said, either way, it'll broaden his skills ).

If we can really improve this guys kicking, he could easily be the steal of the draft. If not he could turn into a Gaspar...A good defender, but you get nervous every time he gets the ball in his hands.

It's a big IF though....But he's well worth the gamble considering where we took him.

If he does get "stuck" down back then that means he's playing too well to be moved and we have ourselves a gun defender.

If he moves forward again then he'll have more tricks than ever.

Every AFL club develops their KPP's like this now, the days of 1 position players are gone. Even Lance Franklin gets moved to the midfield/backline during a poor day up forward and it allows him to have an influence on an otherwise poor game.

I hope that helps some people understand why Gooey isn't just played up forward.

Whats the 10/12 Rule ? Does it involve Andy Collins kicking 10 goals 12from the back flank

The 12/10 rule is when an AFL alligned team like Coburg, Casey or Sandringham play a "stand alone team" like Tassie, Frankston or Port Melbourne to even it up or something like that in those games the AFL alligned teams can only field 12 players from the AFL teams list and the other 10 must come from the VFL sides list. In any other week we can field however many we want or can negotiate with Coburg.

Hope that covers it. :thumbsu:

Interesting point there. I've long thought that in cases like this (and D Kellaway, D Gaspar) that the club should have turned them into opposite side players. So Gourdis and Kellaway become right footers and Gaspar a lefty. The reasoning behind this is that I don't believe that you can uncoach 18 years of bad habits the player has leant on their natural foot. However you can teach the correct mechanics from the ground up so that they become technically correct on their opposite foot.

Interesting idea.

Probably depends on the player though, some people are naturally ambidexterous, others (like me) can barely use their 'wrong' side for much of anything.

I'd guess it wouldn't work for most, but for a few it's be a good idea.

Matt, c-mon mate, with due respect to you, there has been no lack of coverage that the RFC intention was to rookie him in the attempt to turn him into a key defender.

I whole heartedly agree with the move. From my perspective with a LOT of work he could end up being a very capable defender.

Consider some simple ideas, at 193 he is slightly short for a key forward post even given his leap, but ideally sized for key defenders post. He has awsome closing speed to pester his opposition. We lack key talls desperatley. It appears he may not be the most natural of footballers, and thus he has more chance as a 'dour' backman than creative forward. Even if he reverts to the forward line in two years time, how much do you think he may have learned about keeping the ball in the forward 50? I really could go on ...

Now how about giving the RFC some due respect as well?
