Learn. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jack_(name)

This is what I said in another thread about it.

His real name is John but Jack is a common nickname of John. It's only really in the last 20 years that it's become a proper first name, usually everyone called Jack is actually a John/Jonathan.

Some players have preferred to use their nicknames.

Look at Jimmy Bartel who changed from James Bartel.

I think Martin Clarke is Marty Clarke according to official guides.

I think in his first year Harry was listed as Heritier O'Brien, but then he changed it to Harry, and now it's back to Heritier.

jabso, Are You A Teacher Or Similar.

I Just So Smrat!

Seriously though it's just something I've always known and I'm surprised to see so many confused as to why he's called Jack. My grandfather was John but always known as Jack. And through my life most of the people that I've known or heard of called Jack are actually a John. Like I said it's only recently (in the last 15 years really) that people actually are named Jack.

my old man loves to call him spiv, its from JA's days on the sidelines standing around in the Collingwood issue suit, cracks me up every time.

from wikipedia

"Spiv is a British (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_Kingdom) word for a particular kind of petty criminal, who deals in stolen goods or fraudulent sales, especially a well-dressed man offering goods at bargain prices."

Jabso's right - but then you knew that. :p "Jack" has been the diminutive of "John" for hundreds of years, but has only recently been used as a name in its own right.

Now just this morning HOMP (formerly Hell of Mill Park until ScottyD renamed her) commented - get this - that John Anthony looks like what she imagines Julius Caesar to have looked like.:p Don't laugh Opti - she did history at La Trobe and loves her old Romans.

And I can see what she means. JA has a very distinctive, powerful face. A face like a weapon. Yon Anthony has a lean and hungry look, to paraphrase Shakespeare.

So then I sez to HOMP, "Aren't you just thinking of Mark Anthony (another character in Shakespeare' Julius Caesar) ?"

And then HOMP sez, "That's a good nick-name for a player who'll be taking plenty of marks - Mark Anthony."

But I prefer The Jack Attack.:D

I also believe "the Jack" is ye olde slang for various sexually transmitted diseases????

Could be a good thing or a bad thing for an oppo player to find out he is "getting the Jack" next week.

I can't see whats wrong with JA?

Mate cops are people just like the rest of us...they have a sense of humour so I don't see it as a problem.
Bacon just doesn't have much of a ring to it.
Does he have to have a nickname which is some obscure reference to something only a half a dozen people will ever know?

Some nicknames make themselves up like Moneybags others don't.
Some blokes never even get one.
Jack
JA
Whats the diff?
If he does get a new nickname it will probably present itself out of either act or circumstance.

I'm so pissing myself laughing at people who can't figure out where Jack comes from John. Far Kme, how old are some of you?

As far as names go, I'm happy just to call him Jack or JA, and when he gets a goal or does something good, start singing, "we've got the Jack".

Corruption of a song title by AC-DC for those under 12.

AC-DC is a band.

Yes, that's why I said "paraphrase" Prof. And yes, I do realise that I was taking a liberty with the original spelling, but case appropriate. And I can't agree with HOMP - in light of that bust - JC is much too bland looking. Got one of Cassius?
