The Worst today says Browne and Farmer are ins... didn't mention anyone else.
Forecast for Geelong will be 7, hail, and strong southerly wind. Might help in team selections.

Exactly what I was thinking yesterday. The best thing that could come out of Bell's retirement is a hint to McManus.

That may be so, but you know as well as anyone if we could get our top 22 on the park we would give you a run for your money. Maybe not beat you but we would be as competitive as anyone, our style of play seems to upset the better teams more then most.

any news on crowls, on the site it says a week and well they have kinda had the week off with split round..
THORNTON > MCPHARLIN
HAYDEN > MICHAEL JOHNSON
BELL > BROWNE
DUNN > FARMER
Surely Thornton won't survive the cut (fingers crossed anyway)....I'd rather see Mark Johnson get the flick & go in with a Brock O'Brien but can't see it happening...either way, it will be a great learning curve for likes of Palmer, Chopper, Ibbo, Hinkley, Warnock & Head. If we get within 5 goals, we'd have played well.
Match Ups...
Crowley to Ablett
Grover on Mooney
Dodd to Lonergan
Mi Johnson to play small on Chapman
Ma Johnson to S Johnson (this could get nasty for us)
Josh Carr to tag Bartel with help from Ibbo
Mundy loose man across 1/2 back

I know I shouldn't, but I can't help but look at the BigFooty join date for people who post like this...Sept 2007. Makes sense.
That said, I can't see us getting up. I know who will hear about it if we do though.

I cant help but see the join date for people like this.....
Another Freo flag won in March?
P.S Little Creatures beer tastes like cat piss (yes i have tried it before - both the beer and the piss!)
Come and talk to me in another 30 years or so if we're still yet to win one. Then you'll actually have bragging rights. How can a Cats fan who joined in September 2007 criticise anyone's join date? Hypocrite. I try so hard to like Geelong as I absolutely love the way they play. Unfortunately supporters like yourself make that impossible.
By the way your Little Creatures comment is not only one of the most random comments I've ever seen in a team selection thread, it also shows you know nothing about beer. Though given you've tasted - and strangely admitted to it - cats piss that doesn't surprise me at all.
Anyway back on topic.
Out - Bell (ret), Hayden (inj), Dunn (inj), Thornton (omit)
In - Browne, Wiz, McPharlin & MJ
The Cats don't have anyone who can take Pavlich 1-on1. That's not an attack on Geelong either, it's just a fact, no team does. Whether we can get the ball out of the middle fast enough and into his hands to take advantage of it is another story. Tarrant didn't play last time we met and he's certainly an upgrade on Ryan Murphy (who funnily enough had one of his better games against Geelong). Mayne is another who was absent last time we met, Wojcinski is probably Geelong' only defender with enough pace to take him, especially if he's also running through the middle.
Hopefully the Wizard comes back in with a point to prove and absolutely dominates up forward. Would like to see him run through the middle more this week if it's going to be wet as well.
Edge- Fremantle
McPharlin and MJ coming back will obviously help out our defence. Hayden out is a massive loss though as Steve Johnson (3 goals last time) is their only forward I really worry about.
Mooney also kicked 3 last time we met, I have no doubts McPharlin can stop him more often than not though. Unfortunately McPharlin will probably be given the task on Lonergan, which leaves Grover on the big hairy cat.
Dodd is another possibility for Lonergan, he'd be giving up 6cm though.
Edge- Geelong
Sandilands put in a superman effort on ANZAC day, if we are to be any chance he has to do the same again. He's been in AA form and for the first time is actually pulling down some contested marks. Unfortunately at this stage his set-shots still leave a little to be desired. It's very unlikely Ottens will allow himself to be dominated the way Blake & Mumford combo were though.
Unlike last time, this week Sandilands will actually get some assistance - real assistance not midfielder/ruckman Daniel Gilmore type assistance - with Warnock playing and coming of a great game against Essendon.
Slight Edge- Fremantle
They broke even last time so I'll back Crowley to curb GAbletts influence again. Which is not suprisingly absolutely crucial for us. Not sure who else in the middle will be able to do the same though. Ibbo played his best game of the year against Geelong so hopefully he can step up again. Unfortunately without Bell around, who had 31 disposals back in round 6, Ibbo and Palmer will be getting a lot more attention from Ranga & Assoc.
Assuming Browne plays, this will be the fastest midfield we've seen representing Fremantle in a while. Peake, Hinkley, Mayne, Browne and Ibbo all have pace to burn. Unfortunately all the pace in the world is pointless if you can't get the ball.
Big Edge- Geelong
So as per usual it's going to be won and lost in the middle, unfortunately that's where Geelong are strongest and Fremantle are weakest. My tip, Cats by 5 goals.

Midfield Comparison:
The Cats are in the best shape they have ever been. With the midfield class of Bartel, Ablett, Ling and Corey it will certainly be a extremely difficult task of the Dockers midfielders. Consisting of players such as Palmer, Crowley, Peake and Sandilandes. Not only do the Geelong midfielders use the ball well and move it forward quickly they share it around running their opponents of their feet. The Cats make it easier for them to do this by using whats called the centre corridor. The Dockers MUST flood numbers back when the cats gain possession in the centre of the ground. This will cause the Cat players wide otherwise they would have to bomb it to a contest in the forward line. Fremantle will need to maintan this and a aggressive aproach for four quarters to win the game in the midfield but infortunatley it is highly unlikley for this to happen.
Back Comparison:
Both teams have a solid backline. The Cats' consisting of player such as Scarlett, Harley (Skipper), and Milburne just to name a few. This will be very interesting to watch because Fremantle should have a number of quality midfielders coming back for this clash. The Dockers best defender Luke Mcpharlin looks set to return and as does Michael Johnson. However rebounding defender Roger Hayden lookset to miss. Antoni Grover should get the job on Mooney as he is the strongest defender at Fremantle. This is one of the more even areas of the ground but it all depends on who is on the ball come match day.
Forward Comparison:
This is were both teams are strong. In my opinion it will either be a shoot out or a low scoring struggle due to the fact that both teams bost talent in the back and forward half. Matthew Pavlich the captain for Fremantle has kick 19 goals in his past 3 matches however 2 of those 3 have been at Subiaco. Jeff Farmer has a history of magic at Skilled Stadium and it seems to be his deciding match in his career. Chris Mayne for Fremantle came pick 40 in the 2007 NAB AFL Draft. He had impressed this season and his last few weeks have been extremely impressive. But the Cats forward half is just as good. With Players such as Mooney, Chapman, Stokes and Varcoe who are all capable of kicking a bag of goals.
Important Points:
If the defenders of both teams are on their game come saturday it will all be down on the quality of the midfield. Geelong ooze depth and quality there and so if this is the case the cats should come out easy winners.
The only way i can think of Fremantle winning is if Sandilandes wins the effective ruck knocks and if Fremantle kick straight and kick allot of goals. A forward line shoot out would be Fremantle Best bet...
The 1 point loss at Subiaco in round 6 would be fresh in the minds of many Fremantle Players. Especially of the Fremantle Captain Matthew Pavlich who hit the post with 30 seconds left. If he would have kicked that goal the dockers would have grabbed the lead and probably held on for a remarkable win.... It wasn't to be.
ZYxiYPDLVYc
Conclusion:
The Cats will be just too good and even if the weather is going to be shocking come saturday in Geelong im sure that and Goal Fest wouldn't be enough for Fremantle. The Cats are just to good a side to lose this match.
Geelong by 39 points

Edge- Fremantle
Just FWIW, many people think Geelong have the best defence in the AFL (see the thread on the main board). Yet you think Fremantle's forwards have an edge over Geelong's backline? That baffles me a little.
Pavlich will be double teamed I would imagine.
Don't no if this has been discussed.
But for some reason I was under the impression Browne was injured?
Good luck to him.

Bet $100 to get $105 back? Barely covers the petrol for the two trips to the TAB.
Whats the forecast for this weekends game? I reckon we're good value at something like $8 if the sun is shining at first bounce. Don't expect to win, but you never know in a two horse race.

TAB Tri-Bet quotes Freo @ $17 to win over 15.5 or $9 for either team under 15.5.
The second one is pretty good. Gotta feeling it is going to be tight so I put $25 to collect $225 on that one.

Geelong probably do have the best defence in the AFL. However I don't think you have the best match ups 1-on-1 for Fremantle. That's how I was looking at it, from a 6 forwards versus 6 defenders perspective. You have nobody who can take Pavlich 1-on-1. Tarrant (whether you rate him or not) requires a very similar defender, his work rate is enormous, especially compared to Murphy who played in his place back in round 6.
Warnock didn't play last time, so Sandilands wasn't spending much time up forward. Whether it's effective or not, when they are alternating up forward they require a tall - in Warnocks case a tall and mobile - defender which also limits your options for Tarrant and Pavlich.
Farmer i'd also back to beat his man 9/10 times in a 1-on-1 contest.
With Mayne, Farmer, Solomon and...i don't want to say it...Mark Johnson...arrrggghhh....up forward there will be a lot more defensive pressure than there was last time we met as well.
Again all of this more than likely won't matter. Firstly, your midfield is great at transition and always get back to help out, so this 6 on 6 view is a little redundant. Secondly, we often play a lose man (MJ) which will allow your boys to do the same.
I certainly wasn't saying Fremantle will win, we won't. I was just trying to look at each area in isolation or else my little review would've looked like this-
Fremantle are 14th, Geelong are 1st.
Edge Geelong
Which wouldn't of given me much to do on my lunch break...

Farmer beat his man on a 1 on 1? Maybe 3/10 he would beat them 1 on 1. He gets goals when he crumbs or does some magic thing in a pack. 4 out of 10 he gives away a cheap free kick. 3/10 he is beaten soundly.

Memories, humor me for a sec..... Are you serious??
I have noted in some of your other posts that you mention making predictions in the past and you have often been correct. But finals action next year? top 2?? Please, how do you come to that conclusion? I am not taking the piss, I am genuinely interested and want to know. I for one reckon we are in for a much improved season next year...but to go from the dungeon one year, and then top two the following year.... what's the go?

I for one reckon we are in for a much improved season next year...but to go from the dungeon one year, and then top two the following year.... what's the go?
Yes I am serious.... but it does depend on a few factors which we won't fully know until December, I am however confident most will come to pass. I do often make major predictions and have been rarely wrong on them. I also make a decent amount of money on these predictions through gambling, which is how I justify the time I spend researching it.
The breakdown is as such, we have Hayden and Pharlap down back, they would be backmen in any AFL team, ie, they are quality. Up forward we have arguably the best player in the league in Pavlich, if not the best, top 5. Alongside him we have a servicable tall in Tarrant that needs a good defender or he will punish you, in essence frees up pav somewhat.
In the middle we have in my opinion, the best RUCKMAN in the game. He might not be the best overall player, but in ruck terms he is number 1. This is important because it gives us first hands on the ball more than any other team.
So why aren't we winning games now? The area we are most deficient in this season is the midfield runners, clearance winners and clean disposals, as we all know. So what is going to change next season to help this?
1) Palmer improves his already very decent performances
2) Ibbotson and to a smaller extent Mayne improve
3) Hasleby will be back sometime during the season , near to his old BEST form
4) Headland may be back
5) We have a top 3 pick to recruit another quality midfielder, though by end of season it will most likely be top 2. I think it will be Daniel Rich. We also will have 2 TOP 20 picks to get another 2 good midfielders.
6) Cousins if he nominates will most likely be coming to Freo
So combine all those improvements to our middle with the following :-
1) We are removing 8-10 duds off our list at the end of the year (all besides Bell have cost us depth on our list). This is another major reason why our team is so bad at the moment, no depth to cover the injuries.
2) None of our key players are outside their peak AGE zone, so barring injury their performances should not deteriorate much if at all, some may improve.
3) Even with most likely the worst midfield in the competition we almost managed to beat the current top 3 teams, due to our other quality players.
4) Harvey, or SOMETHING, has changed the old Freo habit of what I call "Not trying", so our performances should be less yoyo.
In 12 months time people are going to be talking about how Freo were "so bad last year and are now a team to be reckoned with". Going to be funny watching the journalists eat their words and act like they knew it all along. Kind of like how a lot of supporters here are now supporting my decisions I said we should take earlier in the year - which at the time I was crucified for.
At the end of this year Harvey would have removed almost half the Chris Connolly list and we will be winning a lot of games.... going to be good times for us soon.
That's the story of his career. He's fit and healthy now and we hope it can stay that way.
Its the story of his life. I remember at school he would never train and if he ever did have a run it was always in runners. He didnt play many games at all. Always had a fragile body. To be honest, at the time I wondered how much of it was in his head but its hard to argue with his continual hammy strains.

settle down peoples.
Freo could win, everyone knows we "could". But truth is we probably won't.
At the moment we are finding those who that will be there in 09. It is that simple.
Thanks for the great in depth analysis on this crucial game. Especially the productive input from the pussies.
Browne gets a game because Bell retired. If he did not retire, Browne would be an E.
I am excited. That excites me. Thanks Belly. Love your work.
My prediction for 09 : Browne will be on the list.
