View Full Version : Assistant coach
In the wake of the mob down the road signing Voss as a new assistant coach, I thought we might chase someone of the same ilk as well. I reckon Buckley or Ricciuto would be fantastic choice. Played the game recently and command respect from all players. Players, especially younger ones, would surely look at them in a different way than Wallis or Bond.
The reason I'm starting this thread is actually because someone just asked Slappovich on 6PR if he's heading to Freo as an assistant next year and he refused to answer. If we're gonna search for an assistant, then I'd rather have Bucks or Roo than Slappo.
Thoughts?
Buckley said no to the Eagles...wanted to concentrate on media for another 2-3 years...and by then, Mick would've just about had enough and there goes Bucks...
Well, Slappo aint the brightest spark but he sure knew how to be a defender...

after the troubles down the road i wouldn't want him anywhere near Freo.
You don't need big names to coach well anyway.
Pardon!!! It's less than 12 months since everyone in the football world was telling us how good the Eagles coaching staff was, that we were dills for not picking Sumich as our head coach.
So what happened?
And why is Voss such a good coach already. The same Voss that was going to be Carlton coach but withdrew at the last minute, was going to be Gold Coast coach and jumped ship. Pass thanks.
I wouldn't swap our coaching staff for any at the Eagles thanks.
And might I suggest that you get to know some of these guys. Good people, good football brains, plenty of courage.
We are on the right track although there is a way to go.
CC didn't leave the team in great shape.

I realise we don't need any more Essendon influence, but I would just love to see James Hird at our club.

I agree that you don't need to recruit a big name to be a good coach, and history tells you that the best coaches weren't necessarily the best players, but there is something in this. If we have a recognised midfield deficiency, I really don't see any disadvantage in bringing in a successful midfielder with fresh ideas about what makes a functioning midfield tick. Buckley, Riciutto or Hird would add this for us.
Much as I hate to say it, The Eagles will do well out of this signing. I reckon Voss will only be there 2 or 3 years, but they will get two things out of him over this time.
1. The experience of a member of the Feb 4(/5) midfield, when they have a young mid group looking for cohesion.
2. The inside info of a guy who has been at the AIS appraising the young kids coming up. Couple this with the Eagles likely low position on the ladder this year, compound it with this draft being the last roll of the dice before the new teams rip the guts out of the draft and the Eagles could be drafting deep this year and drafting well. Wouldn't surprise me to see them trade some reasonable names (and/or delist) in order to get a swag of kids in this year.
I hat to say it, but bringing Voss in is likely to be the move that sees them pushing for at least one flag over the 2010-2012 period.

i listened to a part of that convo on 6pr tonight. they were talking about a need to re-shuffle things in the freo coaching box because things might be getting stale in there
?????????????????????????????????????????????????????

I'm pretty sure he still has aspirations for the GC team, and depending on how he goes at WC, he'll probably be in better shape for the job despite what Tweetle Dumb at the AFL says. It's a good move for Voss and a good move fro the Eagles I reckon. I put a post up earlier hypothetically suggesting he would be good in our mix just to help teach our midfield how to be a weapon rather than a liability ... time will tell of course, he could well and truly be a dudd, but our midfield sitting under the most dominant ruckman in the comp at the moment and we are still one of the worst clearance teams in the league, I can't see how he could have hurt.

Well, that's their opinion I suppose. The next caller then asked Slappo if he's heading to Freo as an assistant next year [not sure if he mentioned that it was a rumour or what] and Slappo didn't say anything while Hardie broke the silence and said that he [Slappo] can't answer that atm. OK, Hardie and Slappo may be full of $hit and no one from Freo made any contact re: assistant coach, but if they're not, that means that FFC is on the look-out for another assistant, maybe to replace someone [Malaxos???] at the end of the season.
That's why I said, if that's the case, might as well throw money on someone like Buckley or Ricciuto or even Hird. They would all be much better options than Slappovich.

I would imagine Germo would be the one moving on...

German has only been there 1 year which wouldn't go with the "stale" message.
I was talking German up before the start of the year, but i reckon he has done a shit job if he is in charge of the midfield.

the only person who could possibly be going stale is malaxos, and he is not really involved in the match committe anyway
Haven't seen this much excitement about a coaching appointment since the Saints appointed Tim Watson.
A great player does not necessarily make a great coach.

That makes sense to me.
I think something needs to be done with our ruck coaching, we need more imagination here as I think we could be taking greater advantage of Sandiland's dominance. We should have a lot of revenue to use in our football department, lets hope we go for the best.
I can think of worse people than Jackovich to have around. He's a South Freo boy for a start and although he mightn't be the sharpest tool in the shed there's one he did really well and that's play footy. His preparation and professionalism was pretty good by all accounts and he knows what it takes to go all the way. He also strikes me as the type you'd want at your back in a war and apart from all that I remember him fondly from his battles with Carey. They were giants of the game. There's probably some kind of chemical bath you could put him in to get the slime off.

He would be good as a development/ skills/ something else coach for our young guys.
Because as a tactician he's as useful as tits on a bull when I've heard him for souths. Just like his commentary, takes way too long to get his point across, and then you're not even sure what the hell he is on about.

We had muddy waterman on our coaching panel for 3-4 yrs(Ex Slime) so being ex slime shouldn't count against anyone if that particular person fulfills a desired role.
Like to see belly on panel as the strategist-plenty of learned people suggest he is a deep thinker re footy.
'ruck coach' has been our achilles hill for about 5 yrs with eastaugh then spalding
It was reported on the news tonight that Bell has said he doesn't see his future in AFL or, perhaps more suprisingly Politics. He is going into property development apparently. It's not uncommon of course for people recently retired from any industry to want a break from it. A few years out of the game once he's made a sufficient pile of money might see a change of heart I suppose.
I would be very surprised if Bell takes up an ongoing coaching role in the medium term. A terrific football brain and above all else would be a terrific mentor to players on simply how to handle life as a pro footballer, but I don't think he sees himself doing that sort of thing for now at all.
