Don't think we will make it but where there is life there is hope, would be good to win the next couple to make it interesting. They say because the top 3 have won so much 10 or 11 wins will make it.

Apparently before the West Coast game we were 250/1 to make it now we are something like 4.50/1

I like your optimism but we won't make the finals, simple as that.
4 weeks ago you probably thought we'd be lucky to win 2 of our next 4 games. 16 points later we are 2 games and percentage outside of the 8, with a good draw, having seen Adelaide lose their best two forwards today, comprehensively beaten Brisbane and having seen the side stabilise over the past month. My optimistic side was brutally suppressed for most of this season but it has escaped its captive and is back in full voice! Big crowd next week against the Tigers and we should be able to bury them. Still one week at a time but finals are on the cards! Jump on now.

I have bolded the two that I expect us to win!! and have underlined the ones that are 50-50 with only game I would expect us to lose is the Bulldogs game! so if I'm right that will be six more wins that would give us 12 wins!

On this forecast I expect us to finish one or two games outside the eight!! but as long as we are winning we are a chance!

I expect us to win against the Tigers, Demons, Eagles. Every single other one is a 50/50. If we could just get passed the Pies I reckon we will certainly win the 2 after that. STOP! Got to stop myself from getting too far ahead of myself. One week at a time. Bring on the Tigers. If Richo doesnt get up then we are an even better chance! Wow am I excited tonight. Richmond have had the wood over us the last couple of times we've played them in big occassion football so they are going to be a much tougher proposition then some are predicting, especially if they win in Perth tommorow. Remember it was only a couple of months ago we gave them a 8 goal head start.

Hamstring starin. Most likely to come back next week. I fully expect us to get over the Tigers. Their team is pathetic. Unfortunately you can never lock in a win against them. Hird farewell game comes to mind....
Anyway, we'll see how they go tomorrow but even if they do get up, don't under-estimate how horrible the Eagles really are. Massive match next week! Watch the bandwagonners get on now.

Im sorry also. Pessimist or realist? Who knows but Ill enjoy our wins and feel we have genuine reason to get excited now. Hopefully you are proven officially incorrect. Tigers, Pies, Demons and Eagles. There's another 16 points and 8 straight wins! Watch Adelaide slide out of the 8. Havent seen the Saints fixture but hopefully it is tough. Brisbane will probably get in simply because of their home ground advantage.

Are you referring to draft picks or that our team might get ahead of themselves? If anything the extra wins will give them confidence and it would be great for our kids to experience finals action. 9th is always a disappointment but Im eyeing off the top 8;)

I love the Essendon Football Club and would love to see them to play finals football, but i just don't think we're ready nor good enough. And yes, i was referring to draft picks although i'm not supporting tanking or anything like that in any way.
All the group is wanting to achieve at this point in time is getting games into younger players and developing as a football side and i think that's exactly what we should be doing. Finals is the last things on our mind

Realist. We have purple patches. It happens when they're young.

I hope I'm wrong, but I don't think we'll have the consistency to make finals. I'm just very excited about the fact we've won four in a row and are showing good signs.

Can barely remember it but did it involved Melbourne Sydney and West Coast which we won by 2, 1 and 1 point respectively?
Cant remember the other team. Richmond perhaps?

Very different team from last year though. Still have so many young guns to come in! The future is bright for us.

We then lost to Richmond R21 when we could still of made the finals.

I think some of us are underrating the Pies. We could get lucky and catch them on a down week but they are going to be pushing for a top four spot and will be relentless vs us.
Still if we are lucky with injuries and keep up our form, we're a realistic chance, especially as Adelaide and Brisbane might be struggling.

Greetings Bombers pardon the intrusion. Watching you blokes last night I thought you guys were a bit 'Cat like' in the way you won the centre, owned the corridor and played on a lot after taking a mark. This is good football to watch and while sometimes you can cough up goals as you master this type of game style, it DOES put pressure on the opposition. Better this than running around worrying about Simon Black and the two power forwards.

I laughed out loud when I heard Knights was appointed but I have now dined on the all too familiar dish of humble pie and the guy deserves some credit. Essendon are now two games outside the top eight with seven to play. One thing that does confuse me is that one or two Bomber posters appear to be worried about the Crows when they have NEVER defeated you in Melbourne.

Make no mistake, Melbourne will be a tougher opponent for you than the Crows will be. They are an absolute rabble at the moment. Good luck and................Believe!

REB

Fixed:p

Cheers for the sentiments, but finals from 2-9 is perhaps a bridge too far. We're two years behind Hawthorn as I've been saying all year. It's looking good for the future.

Having said that, with big game players like Lloyd, Lucas and Fletcher still capable of producing genuinely good football, perhaps they can lift the kids up when they inevitably come up flat in one of the games in the run home.

I've missed finals.

I can't say that I think we won't make it... Because, for some strange reason... I think we will.

I'm tipping on the Bombers to win at least 4 or 5 of the coming 7. If we're lucky, 6, and if the Bulldog's bus explodes, 7.

Wishful thinking? Maybe.
Hopeful? Damn right.

I love the optimism but think being 3 games (8 points plus decent %) out from 8th spot, we are really going to be up against it.

I would think that we would have to win 6 out of our last 7 to sneak in and while that's not out of the question, it's a big ask from a young list like ours.

Time for a cliche - every game is a final for us now and probably has been for the last month. The boys have shown they're up to it so far.

Personally, I would love more than anything to see us knock Collingwood off in a fortnight and put them back in their place but let's build it up with some revenge over the Tiges next weekend.

one or two games out? nah, I don't think 8th has *ever* needed 14 wins. Heck, there have been seasons where 14 wins will get you third.

Over the past 10 years.
2007 - 12 wins
2006 - 13
2005 - 11
2004 - 12
2003 - 13
2002 - 11
2001 - 12
2000 - 12
1999 - 11
1998 - 12
1997 - 10

the kicker however, will be our percentage... so we need to smash teams. :)

The door has been left ajar, but I certainly won't be jumping on it until we are undefeated through to round 21... :)

That said, finishing on 12 wins, 1998 style, would be quite exciting...

adelaide, carlton, brisbane and north all have tricky draws. that being said, 11 wins will probably get us 8th spot.

although winning 5 of our remaining games will be tough. if i was a betting man i would guess we will win 4. but in saying that, on our day we could beat any of the sides we play besides the dogs.

at least our destiny is in our own hands. the sides we play are the sides we will need to lose to get above them on the ladder.

StKilda is the team we'd be looking to displace.

But being 19% behind them, we'd need to win 3 more games than them out of the last 7.

The Saints play West Coast and Freo in Subi and play Port here.......so there's 3 wins already.

But 7 wins would book us a place for sure, so you could say that Essendon can control their own destiny.

As soon as I heard McVeigh was injured I wasn't confident about the game yesterday. Monumental effort by the lads yesterday though. Injuries have simply destroyed our season. With a little bit of luck we could have made the finals this year. Pity but it is great to see the likes of Lonergan, Reimers and Jetta prospering this year. That's what this season was all about and finals would have been a bonus.

Im back on lads. Still certainly a chance. Pity that we lost last week but the win over Collingwood makes up for it as we had pencilled that in as a loss. Bulldogs look very vulnerable at the moment also. I think back to our last game against them and rue what may have been but now it instills me with confidence that we can get over them! Melbourne and West Coast should be two guaranteed wins. There are plenty of teams looking shaky in the 8 and this bodes well for Essendon. Im looking at Collingwood, Brisbane and Adelaide. Should get over the ageing Crows and will come down to Saints and Doggies. The belief is flowing through my veins and no doubt many of you are also starting to get a rise in your lower regions.

It is going to be almost impossible for us after the way this round worked out.

There are 3 teams in the 8 that have 36 points and 1 in ninth.

We have 28 points.

The lowest % is StKilda who are ninth at 100.63% and the highest Collingwood with 113.47%

We have 86.02%.

So we have to win 3 more games than any of those four on 36 points and that is without even considering Richmond or carlton.

It's possible, but extremely unlikely.

27 Jul 2008, 19:38
Would have thought the round went in our favour for the most part as it leaves many more teams vulnerable. Needed Adelaide to lose but if everything goes as Ii hope we should be able to surpass them later in the season. At this stage we have to rely on quite a few results to go our way which is not ideal, but if you were to tell me 2 months ago that we would be in a position to make the 8 after 17 rounds I would have scoffed at you. As it stands we have a favourable draw and a stable team that is learning every week.

Richmond loss could be costly though.....
