View Full Version : Why we can win

I really believe we have a good chance of winning this game for a few reasons

1/ Ruck- this is where we can really exploit the bummers. Gardy should beat Salmon and Hille-giving us first use of the ball if he performs like he did on the weekend

2/ Midfield- we have alot more pace than the essenscum midfield do. If we can use it to our advantage then watch out!

3/ Our forward line-IMO we should go in with a preety tall forward line because essendons defence isnt very tall and we can exploit them there too

4/ they dont have as many small pesky forwards. Although there forward line is good it is going to be very one dimensional without Hird. Mcintosh has been in good form of late and he can match it with Lloyd one on one and on the lead.

I reckon if we can get off too a good start then we can do well!

IMO our only advantage is our ruck. Our midfield is good, but they have quality players in J.Johnson, Caracella, Ramanaskaus, Misiti and co. to counter ours. So midfielders cancel each other out (this year at least, as Judd and Kerr get better few will match us).

Their defence will hold our forwards. They have Fletcher and Lucas who are both quality players and should be able to take out Wilson. And recently we've seen without Wilson our forward line crumbles. Apart from Fido, what other proven forward do we have?

IMO our defence should be able to hold essendon's forwards now that Hird is gone (though not a definite, may still play). But we're unlikely to dominate them.

Its also at Colonial, where Essendon are very strong. Will be a tough game, and anything less than the kind of intensity we showed on Sunday will mean we lose.

I think we have better individual players through the midfield but there midfield plays better together if you know what i mean. They dont have one individual midfielder in the quality of Cousins. Johnson is good but he is not on the top line of midfielders in the country where Cuz sits with guys like Voss, Bucks, McLeod etc...

If he turns it on like he did against Nth we will be a show. Kerr is also in red hot form and Matera is also playing well. With Wirrpunda back and probably Fletcher i think our midfield is the key.

Fletcher v Wilson is also important. We need Wilson to at the very least kick 3 goals. He is our main target up forward, his pace is great but Fletcher is so intelligent and knows how to read the play. Our midfielders need to deliver the ball with accuracy to give Wilson a step up.

Hird will play, i think it is just smoke and daggers.

Agreed. This is still a do or die final for Essendon so they will put their best players out on the park.

You guys gotta be kidding thinking you got a chance of beating the Bombers on their turf. A few factors that will determine your fate:

1. Travelling fatigue from being the Leyland brothers.

2. As good as you played against North last week, it was in Canberra which is not exactly intimidating as an away venue, l heard as many cheers for Eagle goals as l did for Roos goals. Bombers home turf is a completely different kettle of fish.

3. Bombers to bring it home for Reynolds.

4. Eagles played their final last week, hard to come up twice in a week.

5. McIntosh and Jackovic are past their best, watch for Lloyd and co run them ragged.

You guys have a great side in the making, defence will be a problem in the future as Jackovic and McIntosh leave the scene, but fill those voids and Eaglers will see September action with some success, just wont happen this year, thats all.

2. Don't forget, we squeaked one in at Optus Oval.

3. A problem. Reynolds will get a bigger send-off than Lady Di. And Sheedy's a bloody master at whipping up the troops.

4. Hard to tell.

5. McIntosh will beat Lloyd, if he's fit. The only time Lloyd's ever badly beaten him was when he was on one leg.

That said - it'd be great if we won, and we've got to be a chance, but the bookies are paying $4.40 at the moment for an Eagles win, and they're a fair bit less passionate than us. So not likely.

PS: We're still getting better odds than Collingwood!

Your first 3 points have merit. Your last 2 dont. We will give it all we've got and if we get up....well all the better :D

I beg to differ on number 5. Noone this year has run Jako & McIntosh ragged. In fact they'd be close to the best CHB/FB combo in the league this year. Lloyd was murdered by McIntosh at Subi a couple of months ago, and I can't see him doing much better this week.

More of a threat to us is Hird (if he plays). We just never seem to match up well to him. I just hope Michael Collica can do the job.

Good luck boys, we'll all be watching and cheering.

If he plays, give the job to Green or Hunter IMO.

Yeah fair point.

I really like both of them and think Hunter especially could be damaging running off him. Green has improved out of sight in the second half of this season and is now definitely in our best 22. I still like Collica as a back up plan however, his track record has been great since coming home.

Im not downplaying Collica's importance...he is still one of our best defenders but a little bit of youth and enthusiasm from Hunter or Green could be what we need to beat Hird. If Hird gets on top though then switch Collica onto him.

Green actually matches up pretty well on Hird- has the pace to stay with him, but is also a decent in the body on body marking contests, which is important given that is one of the more under appreciated areas of the essendon skipper's game. If he plays, i'd fully expect to see Green go with Hird, whilst Wooden gets the job on one of the midfield guns, most likely Jason Johnson.

If there has been one characteristic of Worsfold this season, its that he is prepared to trust his younger players with the big assignments- onceor twice this has led to us getting burnt, but on multiple occasions, it has been what keeps moving us forward- witness Cox's coming of age in the absence of Gardiner,or Judd and Kerr's emergence as pre-eminent midfielders, or Lynch being bought into the side to nail down the vital FF spot, and responding magnificently, or Hunter being sent to CHF during the final quarter against carlton, and then marking and goaling... the list goes on..
Constantly, Woosha has given the inexperienced players the tough jobs, and frequently it has paid dividends.. Belief by the coach is engendering self belief amongst the playing group. Look for these tactics to continue against Essendon- if we win against them, it will be some of the young guys who step up to make it happen!

6. Dean Rioli, Justin Blumfield and Chris Heffernan
will strengthen the Bombers as I think they will all play.

The only thing Rioli will strengthen is the sales in the Donut Van outside Colonial Stadium :D

I'd definately start Green on Hird (yes he will play IMO). Green is a bit quicker than Collica and did quite a good job on Hird last time they played at Subiaco.

I think Hird will play as well.
Blumfield & Heffernan have not really had a good season in the midfield and are one of the prime reasons for Essendons fall from the top 4.

IMHO, I don't think those two will play much of an impact in this game. Our midfield should control the game.
We are in for a chance, albeit a slight one, but I think still a chance. I would not write us off.

He also gives the team something to run around in warm up.
