View Full Version : What must've Birss done?

Just a thread to discuss what must Birss have done to tick Lyon off this much?

Tell Roo he's not as sexy as McPhee?

Say "Sale of the Century reaked until Nikki Buckley came on" in front of Steve Silvani?

Ask John Barker if he ever wishes his first name was Trevor?

Feel free to throw out any of your own faux pas he could have done...

There is a book on who will play the most games out of Fiora, Birss, Raph Clarke and Gwilt.

Ross got 10-1 on Fiora by playing Gwilt for a while.

Birssy was 5-4 on, so no value there.

The Saints are paying coaches collectively (including past coaches), so Ross had to make up the $200k difference another way.

If Fizz can survive for a few games, Ross will finally be able to crack a smile.

Ross had Heath Shaw in his Supercoach?

Birss's kicking was setting a bad example for Roo and Kosi?

Maybe reminded Ross of someone who ran over his cat when he was 8?

"Birrs's name is too bloody hard to spell. I'm sick of him correcting me, so he be a smugass 'Mr Spell' at Casey for a while"

Hahaha, ripping calls getting round here..

Hmmm

Called RL Garry Lyon?

Got extra mayo instead of no mayo is Rossy's 6inch Sub?

Forgot to put an add in the yellow pages in time for rossy's mowing business?

It's amazing - 12 months ago we were calling for his blood and he kept playing, now he is in good touch and can't get a gig...

I'm just starting to wonder whether Birss is going to get delisted at the end of the year. I mean, his continued ommission of the team just makes no sense. If Lyon hates his guts this much, maybe he's written the poor guy off completely! I'd reckon it was a rough deal, and pretty silly considering how good Birss actually is, but hey...

Thoughts?

Out of contract players at the end of the year are:

Xavier Clarke, Leigh Fisher, Max Hudghton, Fraser Gehrig, Michael Gardiner, Matthew Ferguson, Shane Birss, Charlie Gardiner, Brad Howard, Andrew McQualter, James Gwilt,
Robert Harvey, Jarryd Allen, Clinton Jones, Luke Van Rheenan, Robert Eddy, Jarryn Geary, Jayden Attard, Stephen Milne.

I would be worried if I was Leigh Fisher, Michael Gardiner, Matthew Ferguson, Shane Birss or Charlie Gardiner. Even with Banger and the G-Train retiring, Maguire and Connors will be back, and Eddy and McQualter will be elevated. Also expect Attard to get another year, and he will need to be promoted. That leaves us needing to delist at least four more players, maybe five considering we'll have only one veteran next year (Hayes and Baker aren't old enough to qualify, despite 10 years at the club). Also moderately nervous would be Xavier Clarke & James Gwilt. Van Rheenan also looks done.

I reckon Fish and Ferguson are doomed. Charlie Gardiner probably as well.
I would hate to see M Gardiner go while we still have Rix at the club.
Surely we cannot delist Xav and keep his brother?
Van Rheenan has been very unlucky, but he was coming along OK before his injury and surely we need to look to a second ruck for our future.
Howard is starting to get to the point where he needs to show something.
Also trades could be possible. The better players like Gwilt, Fiora, Birss ( if he could get a game ) play , the more they could be seen as trade material. Some teams are struggling to find players atm.

Banger
GTrain
Rix
Ferguson will all go.

Charlie and L Fisher will be nervous.
Birss..not really sure why he is not playin. But if not recalled may go.

Gwilt may just have found some form in time. However needs to back up last week or he may go.

LVR is a rookie and most likely gone.

Some may say play the kids, but this guy's career is on the line and he is not getting a fair run at it. Spoke to the old man on the weekend who does some honorary work at the club, and even he (I've got the temper in the family) was frothing about Birss in front of anyone who would listen, including Bevo and someone who came to pick up Birssy's boots!!!

I hope it works. If it does we might have to see if you can get him to froth about playing Goddard forward. :thumbsu:
Seems a cumbersome way of selecting the team though!

Remember, Rix and Fiora are under contract for 2009, and as thus probably won't be delisted. Either way, their salary will count against the cap for 2009 unless we trade them.

Some of the teams could probably use them.
Some of them are having to run really underdone young guys and Fiora Rix may be worth a forth round pick just to give them a bit of depth.

Would be a better long term prospect for the guys as well , better than going into the preseason draft.

I'd rather players play in their correct position before we start trading them.

Gwilt is not a defender.

Fiora is not a HBF.

Michael Gardiner is not a CHF (particularly at Subi).

BJ is a forward.

Dal is not a HBF.

Gilbo is not suited to playing on the midgets.

Armo will not be effective running on and off the ground (which is why he keeps playing well at Casey - they leave him on the ground).

Rix is a defender. Why play him at FF with Casey when he will never fill this position with the Saints.

Dempster was going well on Pendlebury, so they put him on Cloke?

Ferguson is not a defender.

Allen is not a defender.

Gears is not a run-with player (if he's not ready to win the ball consistently then he should play with Casey where he does win it and kick goals).

And Birss is not a 2's player!!!

Sam F is a forward too, but accept he again deserves AA honours as a defender.

All true , so should we start another sack the coach thread, before he puts Milney in the ruck, or Lenny and Raph in the forward line, or McQualter in full back?

( I know that the players preference is only a small part of determining their position but I did read an interview where Sam made it very clear he likes playing in the backline and would prefer not to be a forward ).

The problem with Birssy is that when he cleans Ross's car, he shouldn't rely on Fizz, Dal and Milney to help him.

Fiora doesn't apply any pressure when he washes, Dal is just slack and hardly covered any of the area he was meant to, and Milney only let the tyres down and did something unspeakable in the back seat.

You'd think being an experienced player he would know by now.

@ Squizzy.

They play Rix at FF probs due to the fact they've got 2 of the best defenders in the comp in Wall and Silvagni playing in defense for them. Not sure what Casey would think of us forcing them to play Rix at FB or something like that, but we may as well try it now cos according to Melbourne, Sandy isn't as helpful when it comes to playing AFL players where their team wishes to try them.

The Sandy situation is an interesting one.

Lovell has been appointed coach for 2009, so not sure where Greg Hutchison fits in.

Assume the Saints will find the right role, as he's a very good operator.

This is a very significant point.

It was a coup to gain his services and I hoped it could be the beginning of a long relationship. 1 year on and we don't even know where his future lies. Lets hope he stays on and does his thing with Sandy without stepping on Lovell's toes.
