View Full Version : Vote #1 For Marlins

Alright!! I know this maybe wrong or stupid but as a fan of the Gold Coast AFL team i am starting this thread to ask ever so kindly if people can get behind the GC17 bid and vote for Marlins.

I understand there are people here who are one eyed supporters of their own team and that's fine but this is for the benefit of the AFL as a competition. What needs to be done is that people need to sign up at
www.gc17.com.au (http://www.gc17.com.au) and then you will be emailed a link to vote for the team name. Registering your support does not mean you have to sign up as a member but it shows your support for the AFL and the future of our great game.

I am hoping that some people here will help this cause and please vote for MARLINS. Sure Stingrays sound fierce but the damn thing is a butt Ugly creature and would make a horrible mascot. Also a stingray killed our beloved hero Steve Irwin.
If you don't believe me Marlins would make a great mascot then have a look at the jumper design thread at Crow28's design, also visit
http://florida.marlins.mlb.com and have a look at what they have done and accomplished with a Marlin.

I know some of you are laughing right now but lets make the right choice for the AFL and lets show those rugby boofs that we have the greatest sport in Australia!! Lets vote #1 for the Gold Coast Marlins!!

Thank you!!!!

There is an ABA basketball team called th Cairns Marlins who have been around for many years. They won the national title last year. Probably have the name registered I suspect.

I don't understand peoples fixation with "oh but it's been done!!!"

There is absolutely no complications with taking the Marlins name. The Cairns ABA would fail dismally to prove that having a Gold Coast based AFL club would infringe on it's market identity.

Same as the sharks. There is not a sporting team in the world which can make this claim.

Special cases like the Lakers can be made because the Lakers invented the mascot themselves. There is no such thing as a laker. It's not a noun. However, sharks and marlins are. No one can claim copyright on them, and unless they can prove that they are having their business identity compromised, then there isn’t a damned thing they can do about it.

Might as well vote for Guards or Ironmen. By having one of the silly names at least you'll remember the teams name for future reference as the team itself won't last long

Ok then!! You lot are funny :) but back on the subject, i would like to point out that my Vote #1 Marlins campaign is going well.
I have been getting the word out to hopefully save the Gold Coast AFL team from choosing a wrong name and it's scary to think that they could be called the Gaurds or even worse the Ironmen  !!
Although if they were the Ironmen they could be sponsored
by Nutri-Grain :D !!

No, there is only one choice!! The Mighty Marlins!!
I have been busy emailing friends and work mates and family and have told them to email their mates and it's working. The poll on www.goldcoast.com.au (http://www.goldcoast.com.au) now has the Marlins storming ahead above 50%.
We still have work to do. Please sign up to GC17 so you can participate in their poll and please choose Marlins.
It's for the future of the club and the AFL.

Absolutely . It's a shark , which was the preferred option .
Actually better as an audible chant and great logos .

But you may have answered it yourself with the logos .

The problem is not with naming the team , but not clashing with
all the existing marketing possibilities .

Chants need to be 2 or 3 syllable for a team. If the logo doesn't do it (Crows) then the team name usually does (A-del-aide). "Gold Coast" will be the chant, not the logo, so Hammerheads doesn't matter for that reason.

The following Marlin jersey from crow28 has black and white in it (Southport colours) and the orange of GC Blaze, so its very suitable to the GC brand and local colours. [Why on earth replicate Titans colours- thats NRL!]

It seems Marlins is gaining momentum as it has passed 60% of votes on the Gold Coast bulletin site. Also the support here at BF has been great and for that i thank those who have taken the Marlins brand on board.
Another great logo has been seen as well from Mero who really should design for the AFL.
I have posted off letters to GC17, Sea FM and Hot Tomato FM to try and push the Marlins brand and to hopefully gain some more support.
Hopefully the NBA will keep their Suns brand under lock and key which will give the GC17 bid commitee no choice but to choose the Marlins.
It seems the Suns is what the bigwigs want so we need to voice our opinion and have the Marlins chant going. This is our team and we need keep voting #1 for Marlins.
Thanks everyone and thanks BlackFalcon for your support and effort!

GoCats- you're red and gold strips will obviously clash with Adelaide Crows. The gold and burgundy strip will clash totally with Hawthorn, as its brown looks like burgundy in bright sunlight.

At least the Marlins strip of predominant orange with white and black piping will not clash with any current AFL strips. This is a major advantage for this jersey and its clash/main (see Crow28's). It can be registered without any future problems (remember how Freo had to change its strip).

I prefer the above Marlin to Mero's Marlin logo, however the obvious preference for local GC folks based on that poll is that the people there like Marlins as a name the best (91%). It has become the best choice of the 5 names shortlisted.

We have a guernsey ready to go, which has local ties and meaning. Marlins is a good choice.

As for wussy club nicknames; Crows, Saints, Cats, Magpies, Blues, Dockers and Power hardly strike fear and terror into anyone. A club's strength and success is not built on its nickname. The logo name is an identity which the locals can attach themselves to, and given the names of Sharks and Stingrays already on the GC, Marlins fits in well, as 91% of the locals have indicated. :thumbsu:

I am behind the club 110% but i don't want to have to support a club with a disgraceful name. I am doing everything in my power to stop GC17 from choosing Ironmen. We all know Stingrays was favourite and probably still is so by starting a campaign to support Marlins (which is my #1 choice)
It will simply and hopefully get rid of names like Ironmen.

I don't recall Brisbane 'Bears' being rapturously received, nor 'Dockers' and 'Power' by Melb crowds. So yes a workable name is important, especially in merchandising.

Ok, well take Freo for instance. I agree that the name 'Dockers' is quite poor, yet they find themselves booming off the field in Perth with atleast 35,000 members(not sure the exact figure) and pulling good crowds. An example of a club with a name with abit to be desired, but have still succeeded proving a name will not make or break a club.

Furthermore, Ports struggle to pull crowds can hardly be put down to it's name.

Notably, Perths core supporter base far outweighs that of the Gold Coast but my point was that unless it is truly awful (Iron Men etc), it will not be the undoing of the club. Merlins, Stingrays, Hammerheads are all decent names that could all potentially become part of GC17, and my point was that not picking one of them will not damage the club meaningfully.

Yes Smoo I get your point re Dockers, but still Bears-Dockers-Power are not recieved well in the Melb community as club logo names. Of course Dockers and Power are brilliant in their home settings, which is what they are designed for. Powers problems are probably more to do with their SANFL preoccupation though.

My point, is that if the GC team can get a logo name that the Melb crowds are onside with from the start, then they begin without all the negative baggage the Bears-Dockers-Power had to endure, and in the case of the last two, still do.

Any beginning 'interstate' team suffers from that neg response from Melb. GC doesn't need to help them by choosing a d**k name. Marlins is workable and flying under the radar.

The Florida Marlins are a franchise, but the name is up for grabs in Oz. NFL Philadelphia Eagles existed long before West Coast Eagles. New Orlean Saints. Detroit Lions.

I notice how nobody says that Footscray's moniker of Bulldogs is too British???? While we're on it, what kind of cat are the Geelong type - feral, moggy, leopard, cheetah, Burmese??

In Qld NRL, we have the Broncos, Cowboys and Titans, which are the NFL monikers of Denver, Dallas and Tennessee, so you do have a point, which makes Marlins even more relevant. Kind of fits with Brisbane Lions, but is that African or American? Are we going for the origin of the franchise name or the origin of the animal? Marlins exist off the Qld coast. :)

Admittedly I'm not a big on the whole fishing scene, but aren't Marlins and big game fish much further north...I'm pretty sure that they don't come that far south.

Even if this is the case, it just adds to the relevance of Marlins for the GC. BLions being based in Briz with its attitude of "stuff the rest of the state, we got it all here", hasn't had the best of relations with QAFL, in fact its been downright fiesty due to Lions persistence in saying "we are not the flagship, you are".

Bottom line is that, apart from the odd pre-season game in Cairns, Lions haven't much of a role to play or impact in North Qld. The door is very much open for this 'Marlins' territory to become associated with GC. One of the first to sign on with GC17 was a Cairns lad.
