only seen earl a couple of times and never really saw it as essential viewing (despite my undying man-love for jason lee) but i hardly ever miss HIMYM after seeing it at the start of this year.

Agreed both are fairly average with Earl being the worst.

My Name Is Earl - Alright show. The brother's dumbness gimmick and associated jokes wore off pretty quick. It's funny but I feel it limits itself, maybe due to network pressure (aka "dumb it down"). Not anything to call home about.
How I Met Your Mother - Mildly amusing show, nothing more. The best thing I can say about it is that if you ranked all of the laugh track sitcoms ever made this show would be somewhere in the middle and that's more a reflection of how bad laugh track sitcoms can be.
Neither show is outstanding on any level. I wonder what other shows you watch if you consider these the "Best two shows on television at without doubt"
What shows would you guys regard as the best??

The first episodes of My Name is Earl were awesome, then it got abit repetitive.

I love Earl, great show.
HIMYM is terrible and I'm amazed that it is still on the air.

HIMYM is pretty much the only conventional sitcom I care about these days. Good cast, reliably funny (if not DVD-purchase funny).

How I Met Your Mother is awesome. I've sort of gone of Earl but love How I Met Your Mother.

I like both shows!:thumbsu:
i loved the first season of Earl... it has gotten tired though... i still watch it, but it isn't a must watch of my week like earl used to be...
How I met your mother is a show I've only just started watching, but it's one of the best sitcoms i've seen for a while... A real chemistry exists between the characters, and they feel real unlike the characters in a lot of sitcoms... It's not as predictable as other sitcoms are...
Can't believe anyone would put these two shows on the same footing.
Earl is far more imaginative and actually funny, which is kind of a must for a comedy.

What a sad state comedy is in if these shows rate as the best on television.
Compare the briliance of some of the top British sitcoms (Fawlty Towers, Blackadder, Dad's Army, Extras, The Office, Vicar of Dibley, Red Dwarf etc) and US shows such as Arrested Development, The Office, Seinfeld, Curb Your Enthusiasm, to the crap that is Earl and HIMYM (in particular).
None of those are currently running.
I think Curb Your Enthusiasm sort of is on Monday nights. I'm not sure if it's new to Aussie TV or not.
If you count repeats and Foxtel the best are:
Arrested Development
Monty Python's Flying Circus
Yes Minister
South Park
Simpsons
Futurama
Family Guy
American Dad
Drawn Together
Aqua Teen Hunger Force
Harvey Birdman: Attorney at Law (w/ new episodes....I think)
Seinfeld
Curb Your Enthusiasm
Boston Legal
and more
Technically they are all on TV and I rate as better comedies than MNIE and HIMYM by far. Although MNIE is ok and as far as cookie-cutter American sitcoms go HIMYM doesn't make me want to puke.
"This one time, At band camp"
In terms of comedies - Vicar of Dibley is probably the best on at the moment (even though they are reruns). Alice reduces me to tears every episode without fail.
Earl was good once upon a time but it seems like they have run out of ideas this season.

Never thought much of My Name is Earl, but I love HIMYM. Great cast that has fantastic chemistry. Neil Patrick Harris is hilarious, he makes the show. I love the flashbacks, the flash-forwards and all the little clues to the future. Very under-rated show.

My Name Is Earl used to be sensational - Could not watch an episode without laughing, but its turned pretty average lately. Don't bother watching it anymore.

They are both quite good but Boston Legal is just much more better.
We need more Black Books style comedy shows though.
Boston Legal without a doubt
Loved the bit the other night where Whitney opens up Denny's folder to peek at his opening for the court case and all that's written is Denny Crane about 100 times :D
