Hawthorn has won one of the games of the season and extended its perfect start to 2008 with a 12-point win over Brisbane at the Gabba on Saturday night.

The Hawks prevailed 19.16 (130) to the Lions 17.16 (118) for their first win at Brisbane's home ground since Round 8, 2000.

Lance Franklin's eight-goal haul led the way for the victors, with superb supply from a midfield led by Brad Sewell (27 disposals), veteran Shane Crawford (28) and skipper Sam Mitchell (32).

Daniel Bradshaw's impressive return from injury continued as he drilled seven for the Lions. Usual suspects Luke Power, in his 200th game, and Simon Black were among the better players for Brisbane.

The loss could have disastrous repercussions for the Lions with skipper Jonathon Brown's quiet match further soured when he went on report in the second quarter for charging Mitchell.

While it was Franklin's night, his accomplished sidekick Jarryd Roughead kicked the first goal and set in motion a free-flowing opening punctuated by passages of brilliance from key forwards at both ends.

Glamour boy Franklin - with Daniel Merrett for company - bagged two first-quarter goals, but could easily have had four in the initial half hour had it not been for a wonky radar.

Franklin's second goal, after a typically powerful mark against two defenders, was enough to put the visitors ahead late in the first term.

Ashley McGrath, though, converted a set shot to wrest back the advantage in the dying stages and the Lions took a four-point buffer into the first break.

Hawthorn's most experienced campaigner Crawford and Mitchell combined for 20 possessions in the first quarter, making up for a lack of input from Luke Hodge and Chance Bateman.

Hodge, opposed to Troy Selwood, went without a touch in the first quarter and was beaten on the night while Justin Sherman held in-form midfielder Bateman.

The second stanza - an equally entertaining affair as the first - was stained only by the report of Brown.

The rugged Brisbane man went into the book for his late contact on Mitchell after the Hawks skipper had marked 50 metres from goal.

Mitchell got to his feet quickly and was able to pop through the simplest of goals after receiving a 50-metre penalty for the hit.

The back-and-forth nature of the contest continued when Colm Begley answered on his left.

Franklin's third - with 2007's least-benched player, his opponent Merrett, watching from the dugout - stretched his side's lead to eight points at the long break.

Joel Patfull was assigned the dangerous Hawk after half-time, but the opponent mattered little when the sublime left-footer threaded one from the junction where the boundary and 50-metre mark collide to launch the second half.

Bradshaw's fourth and another from McGrath slashed the margin to a couple of points and at the conclusion of another breathtaking quarter the Hawks maintained the slender lead.

That man Franklin, however, kicked the first two goals of the last quarter, including a stunning dribbled snap from deep in the pocket, to help swell the cushion beyond three goals.

The Lions didn't throw in the towel, but Franklin and a rejuvenated Williams provided the answers to maintain Hawthorn's perfect start to 2008.

The Hawks can set their sights on a Sunday afternoon match against Richmond at the MCG, while the Lions host Melbourne at the Gabba on the same day.

Hawks easily account for Lions

Hawthorn has celebrated Shane Crawford's 300th match in style, returning to second on the ladder through a 69-point thrashing of Brisbane at Launceston's Aurora Stadium.

Both clubs fought out a scorefest last time they met at the Gabba, but this time the Lions could only contain Hawthorn until half-time before they booted 13 goals in an impressive second half to secure the 16.14 (110) to 5.11 (41) victory.

Lance Franklin and Cyril Rioli were constant threats in the Hawks' forward line, kicking six and three goals respectively as Luke Hodge excelled across half-back, playing loose and repeatedly setting up forward raids through his 31 possessions.

Hawthorn's zone positioning through the middle also stymied Brisbane's ball movement during the first three quarters, forcing the Lions into a chip and possession game that gave the Hawks' defence every chance to of blocking Brisbane power forwards, Daniel Bradshaw (two goals) and Jonathan Brown (one goal), who were largely ineffective.

The result temporarily takes Hawthorn back into second on the ladder, although the Bulldogs have the chance to re-take the position when they play North Melbourne on Sunday, as Brisbane's sixth loss in eight matches sees the Lions maintain ninth over Carlton through a superior percentage.

And, while Crawford was hardly in vintage form as he continues to struggle with knee tendonitis, he gave the competition one of its best moments this season when he drilled the ball home for the game's last goal as every Hawk on the park converged on the former-Brownlow medallist.

On a beautifully sunny afternoon in the Tamar Valley, both teams opted for defensive strategies in the first half, with both sides only managing a goal apiece in a tight first quarter.

In what was rapidly becoming a boring affair, frustrating the 19,000 locals who showed up, Franklin burst the game open just before half-time after the Lions had chipped around for 18 marks in a row.

Buddy had already scored one goal, but he moved up the ground, taking the ball from a throw in at half-back and streaming down the wing, taking three bounces before picking out Rioli for the team's second goal of the game.

Franklin added another goal before half-time but the 3.7 to 1.5 scoreline hardly gave any indication that Hawthorn would break the game open so decisively after the major break.

While the Hawks piled on nine goals as the tiring Lions dropped their heads in the final term, they really broke the game open in the third term after Cameron Stokes kicked the first of his two goals in the 17th minute.

Brisbane had been pressuring up to that point but was being repelled by a desperate Hawks' defence before Stokes booted the team's first goal of the quarter. Majors followed to Franklin, Rioli and Roughead as Hawthorn led by 28 points at the final change.

And, from then on there was never any chance of Hawthorn letting this one slip, putting the foot on the pedal as Buddy nabbed three of the team's nine last-quarter goals, sneaking in a Goal of the Year contender at the 30th minute mark as he shrugged two tackles and snapped truly.
