Adam Gilchrist has put forward an idea to put forward a bid to have T20 in the 2020 olympics.

http://content-aus.cricinfo.com/ci/content/story/363699.html

Steve Waugh, Yuvraj Singh, Sourav Ganguly and Stephen Fleming have all backed Gilly's idea.

I believe it is a good idea. Imagine if countries like America and China played. If they got it going over there, they could be the big power houses of the game in 50 years. This is the perfect way to 'globalize' the game.

NEVER EVER EVER going to happen.

If London don't put it in the games - no-one will.

oh and you'd know how????

FFS, the reason they are aiming for 2020 is to give them time and as far as i know the host nation doesn't decide what games are played at the Olympics the IOC does.

doesn't hurt too that there is a bit of women's cricket around as the IOC like gender equity in the Olympics

no, that's probably saying a lot

all i remember was that it was in malaysia and damien fleming was playing.

cricket in the olympics should be confined to the "never seen" box next to the c'wealth version.

Sounds like a good idea. Since cricket is a world sport it should be involved....

Golf has been in the Olympic Games --- many moons ago!

Golf probably has more of a chance in the Olympic Games than Cricket.

Cricket won't ever be in the Games, it's not "worldly" enough.

Why are we taking this idea seriously anyway? One guy mentions it, a couple of other guys agree and all of a sudden the media has jumped on the bandwagon and here we are in Australia taking it seriously. It will never happen.

Tenpin bowling is more worldly than Cricket, and more worldly than a lot of stuff in the games now(fencing and greco roman wrestling anyone?)

Fencing and Wrestling comes from the Ancient times and the Ancient games: it'll always be there. There are plenty of sports in the Games that don't make sense (Badminton, Judo, Taekwondo to name a few). But cricket will never be there. And neither it should be.

Punter wants it in.

Remember the sub-continent alone constitutes 22% of the world's population.

does that mean the west indies would break up into seperate countries such as trinidad and guyana and barbados etc ?????

they can do what they want with T20 in the olympics - doesn't phase me.

no one constantly reminisces about the 98 commonwealth games and the aust v south africa final.

South Africa won in hte final v Australia. They didnt go down as official ODI's however.

Windies wre split up into individual island nations.

And one Brad Young took a hat-trick I believe. :D

Not a chance in the world. Cricket is a Commonwealth sport only and won't be in the Olympics for the same reason as netball. The only good thing it would do is bring the lazy Indians to the Olympics. 1 billion people and barely a medal to show for it = disgrace.

I would love to see cricket in the Olympics. But as has been discussed, the Windies would have to break up into the individual countries. I'm not sure of the depth of the countries in the Windies, but Im guessing the countries wouldn't be very competitive.

However it would give me a real good reason to watch the Olympics!

Cricket has to be re-introduced to the Olympics because it's a disgrace, not even real, that Great Britain are the reigning Olympic gold medallists

If a sport doesn't treat the Olympics as it's pinnacle then it shouldn't be an Olympic sport in my opinion.

On that basis, I give the idea of cricket at the Olympics the thumbs down :thumbsd:

You're probably right, but the reality is that a lot of sports in no danger of being dropped are like that (hell, soccer doesn't even pretend to take it seriously by making it mainly under age).

But I think it would still be taken pretty seriously by most cricketing countries and the appeal to the IOC is that it lets them access about 1.4 billion people that in the main don't watch the Olympics.
