Clubs confirm threatening letters

August 8, 2008 - 12:47PM

Adelaide and North Melbourne today confirmed the receipt of letters threatening stars Andrew McLeod and Nathan Thompson earlier this year.
McLeod, Thompson and Sydney Swans ace Adam Goodes are among the five AFL players believed to have been targeted by the threats, which were sent out in the lead-up to the Victoria-Dream Team Hall of Fame tribute match in May.

"The Adelaide Football Club can confirm that one of its players was the subject of a threatening letter sent to the club earlier this season," the Crows said in a statement.

"The letter was forwarded to Crows chief executive officer Steven Trigg in May this year and passed on to police. "Police investigations are continuing and at this stage there will be no further comment."

North Melbourne communications co-ordinator John Murphy said Thompson's threat had also been forwarded to police.

"The North Melbourne Football Club can confirm that Nathan Thompson received a threatening letter earlier this season," he said.

"The letter was forwarded to North Melbourne chief executive Eugene Arocca, who passed it on to police.

"The club can make no further comment on the issue as it is subject to an ongoing investigation by Victoria Police.

"Please respect the privacy of Nathan and his family as this sensitive issue is resolved."

Players from Carlton and Essendon were also thought to have received letters.

The Victorian police response to the threats included arranging additional security for McLeod and Goodes during their time in Melbourne with the Dream Team.

"We have got the Moonee Valley Criminal Investigations Unit detectives investigating a number of threatening letters allegedly sent to AFL players," spokesman Sen-Constable Adam West told News Ltd.

"Victoria Police takes any threats made to any person extremely seriously and is investigating these matters."

The Swans, meanwhile, have declined to make any comment about the matter.

Who were the Essendon players? That would help ID suspects. If it was Dyson or Laycock, the threats almost surely would have come from Essendon supporters!!! ;)

probably not the best thing to joke about really if anything ever happened...

appears some of these are racially motivated - if i had to guess and pick one guy i'd probably say andrew lovett.

Not a good thing to happen at any club or any person/organisation for that matter, but some people have nothing better to do than give threats but I imagine nothing will end up eventuating, except a bit of a scare for the player and club which they don't need and the people giving these threats are heart-less people no doubt about that, and would be clapping their hands seeing the media all over this story, exactly what they wanted, attention. :thumbsd:

All of the above mentioned seem to be of indigenous background. I just think any threats are pathetic let alone racially directed ones.

Well it may not be racial if Nathan Thompson is the North Melbourne player
