View Full Version : That was the Season that was: Round 3
Essendon: 9.13 (67)
Brisbane: 17.15 (117)
Mr Ripper described this as "the ballbursting Brisbane Lions, face up to the popgun power of Essendon" (http://www.bomberblitz.com/fixture/matches/2002/rival/round-3.htm) at BomberBlitz.com. Funny, but it ended up being true, the bastard.
I can't remember much of this one. I arranged to meet Adrian at the social club to have a few drinks. But the lightweight drove therefore that ruled him out of any serious drinking. So I had to uphold the title of social club **** head for round 3. All I remember is some old geezer telling me that Gary Odonell was the softest captain we've ever had.
Bolton was **** still and Joel Reynolds got a run. McGrath out again.
This I think was the changing of the guard. The Essendon dominance of the home-and-away seasons of 99-01 was gone and the chance of the bombers having a long era of dominance like Hawthorn of the 80s was looking like a lost dream.

The repercussions in terms of preception from that game were interesting. We travelled to Brisbane and lost by 50 odd points. Everybody's conclusion was Brisbane are a fair bit better than us, they are the benchmark in the league now. A couple of weeks later Brisbane travelled to Perth and the Eagles beat them by 50 odd points and nobody's perception of Brisbane changed one bit.

I was hanging out for this game since Round 10 2001 after those mongrels knocked us off then. At the Gabba the Lions one-eyed bandwagon was in full swing, with the media reporting this game as the Grand Final in April and crap like that, even though it was only round 3.
At 3 qtr time the Bombers were down, and I was literally praying for them to come back in the last (this was before we all knew about Essendon's last quarters).
The Lions got a run on, kicking a few goals in a row, and I thought that my prayers hadn't been answered. Then a huge downpour came. I thought to myself that God was a Lions supporter, and that my prayers were recieved, but reversed.
After the game all the new bandwagon Lions supporters were already talking about back-to-back flags.
Was a good game, just the final margin was the distressing thing.
I watched this game at one of my regular haunts, The Rose Hotel in Fitzroy. The second half of the match is a blur, but i do remember telling a rather obnoxious Lion to f*ck off.
F*ckin' smartar$e.
where's wally?

This game really showed how dominating the Lions would be this year, especially up at the Gabba. Really did make you think twice as to why Collingwood didn't play up there :D

Nahhhhh, the one i was waiting for was the colonial game, that was where we were going to hit them hard, not up there, they showed that the g.f was no fluke, treated us with comtempt......still waiting for my payment from a certain young lady from bomber talk.

Silly girl. She needs a good lesson in punting ... 10 goals in IS 10 goals in. Not there abouts! :p
