Hey, this is a tangent of a discussion on the eagles message board, but i was just wondering what your thoughts were-
The lions won the spoon in '98- can any of you who were supporting them back then remember why? Like did you have injury concerns, coaching issues or what?

I remember wallsy making a comment on this a few weeks back to micheal voss on the couch, the problem voss came up with was that everyone was incroching n each others territory in that the players were telling the admin how to run and the admin were telling the coaching how to coach, ect ect. The team/ management was like a time bomb supposedly in that it was just self destructing, which catapulted in northey being sacked.
Its quite incredible to see the difference between now and then, cause we have pretty much exactly the same list bar the few draft picks of late. I'm really proud as a Lions member that we havent *bought* or really poached players from team, they have been chosen in drafts ect and worked on really hard. Makes me proud to see the progress of them all!
Saying that the first thing that Matthews did when he came to the club was made his own board and chose the trainers, directors ect that he wanted and stipulated that they all stick to what they are hired for. He ONLY will coach, and he won't attempt to tell management ect how to run the team, ect ect.

1997 was weird for them all after the merge, we all had to learn a new Club song and the boys were just starting to get to know each other, and there was also the added pressure of earning your spot.
But in 1998, we had the worst year of injuries. At the end of 1998 season we had about 8 players on the ground that had serious injuries, but had to run on. Darryl White had a broken hand and had to play. Just about the whole team went into surgery the next day after round 22.
Voss had broken his leg and Lions sacked Northey and Roger Merret was the interim Coach.
Leigh Matthews came to us in 1999, and we haven't looked back.
...and going by what Voss said 'On the Couch', it sounds like admisitration were bleeding into the football department and that wouldn't have helped.
1998 was a serious learning curve and the Club are now being rewarded for the lesson learnt.
