Alrighty. I made the trek on Saturday night from Melbourne to Brisbane.... a few brief things:
a) Des Headland is a genius in the making. He has taken that mantle from Simon Black. Simon Black used to be a genius in the making, now he's just a genius.... Simon learned from the master, Michael Voss.
b) Our defence is tighter than a goldfish's bum. And they act like a 'team' - after every goal that results from a run out of defence, they run in, give a low five, pat on the back etc. Merciless.
c) The Gabba is a sensational venue to watch the footy. The cheering, the clapping, the yelling. Its a mini-coloseum. Though I think good-natured (in the way the people treat opposition fans) in comparison to the Adelaide/Port Adel. fans at Footy Park for instance. And thats a good thing.....
d) amazingly we certainly didn't play the perfect game. I believe we can go up a notch. Lets hope its this saturday....
e) Mr Ripper's "Ferret Power" sign is a sensation up close. Sparkly back and all.
f) I got to meet a few of the BF regulars briefly before the game (Beau's Girl, Mr R, Danni, I think also Keatings Gal...). Tried to sneak out the back at half time to say hello but the throng was large. Had a quick word to Danni after the game as the others had nicked out the back to queue. Danni could get a second job as a stockbroker - she was fielding more mobile phone calls than one.... organising 82 cheersquaders to make the trek south this week. A bunch of good folks doing the cheering for us behind the goals.
g) the was only one Port Power inflatable finger in the entire stadium. Why the hell did she have to sit in front of me....
h) I walked to the bus stop at Central with a couple of Lions fans who had driven down from Mackay to see the game. (and I thought I was keen flying in from Melbourne.... sheesh). They were going to come down to Melbourne this week. Now that is some drive.
i) a few familiar Melbourne-based Lions faces behind the goals, including one old lady who goes to games all over Australia. Fantastic effort.
j) it was bloody bloody great. thank god we won!!!!!
Hope to see you all again at the after match on Saturday, or Sunday down at Brunswick Street. For those who aren't coming, enjoy the game on the big screen - we'll yell our heads off for you.
cheers
Adey.
