Collingwood v. Richmond
Friday, 20 April 2001 - MCG 7:40 PM
Both of these teams are coming off excellent wins last round,
Collingwood over the Bulldogs, and Richmond over Brisbane, so
neither team will be lacking confidence. The style of game we will
see in this match is one that should make all footy supporters
happy, a hard running fast attacking shoot out. Neither side is
overly strong in defence, so I am looking at both clubs to play to
their strengths, which has been strong running through the
midfield, giving their attacks plenty of opportunity to outscore
the opposition.
Richmond's midfield led by Wayne Campbell and Matthew Knights will
go at it against Collinwood's on ball division led by Nathan
Buckley. With the likely return of Brad Ottens, Richmond should
enjoy an advantage in the rucks due to his combining with Benny
Gale, up against Magpie tyro Josh Fraser, who will likely be
missing Steve McKee due to a shoulder injury. Young Fraser is
making a big impact on the game by being so athletic, added to his
height, 202cm, plus the ability to drift forward for the odd
important goal. This total package makes the match up against
young Ottens one the footy purist will go a long way to watch.
Collingwood's defence is manned by an interesting combination,
older warhorse Richardson, dependable Prestigiacomo, and new hums,
Lonie, S. Wakelin and Clement. So far they seem to be forming a
dependable unit, not flashy, but Magpie coach Malthouse can rely
on them it seems. Match this defence against the Richmond attack
is where this game will be won and lost. The Tigers use Ottens,
Matthew Richardson, Ben Holland and Ray Hall all in a non-static
type of attack, making the opposition defence lose the man ups on
occasion, therefore giving the midfielders open forwards for goal
scoring opportunities.
Anthony Rocca will see his time divided between centre half
forward and helping Fraser in the rucks, when at CHF though he'll
be matched by one of the leagues better centre half backs in
Darren Gasper. The Tigers face a problem in who will guard Chris
Tarrant, Royce Vardy will probably have first crack at this
difficult task. Both teams will be expecting the midfielders and
flankers to contribute to their teams scoring power.
In what will be an entertaining game, the Richmond forwards will
likely have greater opportunity to pile on the goals. Buckley will
have his usual task of trying to combat a tagger, who could be one
of the Kellaway's or Rory Hilton, plus be the driving force for
his club. In a close game I'm tipping Richmond by a narrow 2
goals.

Sydney v. Essendon
Friday, 20 April 2001 - SCG 7:40 PM
It has been a long time since the Essendon side were underdogs but
that is what they will be this weekend as they renew their rivalry
with the Sydney Swans. The loss of Lloyd and Moorcroft through
suspension and Misiti through injury renders the Bombers not as
invincible as they have been in recent times. Essendon have
brought in Wallis, Bolton and Forster-Knight as their
relpacements.
As for the Swans, they will still be without skipper Paul Kelly
and retain the services of key onballer, Darryn Cresswell after
being cleared of a frivolous striking charge.
If the Swans have had a rivalry with anyone in recent times, its
been the Bombers at the SCG. And it has been this performing on a
national stage, which has only increased the huge profile of Kevin
Sheedy and his side. A draw and a one point loss in 1996, followed
by another one point loss in 1997 and the Bombers have had more
trouble at the SCG then they have against any other side.
Essendon are 7-11-1 lifetime at the SCG, in their 19 visits.
The game should be an enthralling one, with the field used as a
chessboard. Eade and Sheedy are two of the more innovative coaches
and the matchups should be coming thick and fast all night.
It's been a long time since Essendon lost two on the trot, Rounds
6 and 7 of 1999 to be exact and if they lose this weekend, they
still may end the season at 20-2.
In what should be a classic, the Swans should prevail in a
nailbiter.

Carlton v. Adelaide
Saturday, 21 April 2001 - Optus Oval 2:10 PM
After their courageous win last week over the Bombers can the
Blues back it up? Although the Dons have swept all before them in
the last 12 months they don't have a big marking centre half
forward and depend upon a rotation of Hird, Lloyd and Lucas
through centre half forward.
None of who play the traditional 6'4 or 6'5 centre half forward
role. Although Lucas has the height he doesn't have the bulk or
strength of a Carey, Robran or Grant and takes more of his marks
on the lead than in one out contests. He lacks little in stamina
and pace and Carlton was forced to match Lucas with Massie last
week in a tagging role. Massie won that match up however this
week against Adelaide I can't see Massie getting the job on
Robran or Biglands and SOS and Manton will probably line up in
the two key posts. Jarman will be tagged by Beaumont who seems to
get the most dangerous opposition forward each week. Last week it
was Hird and this week Jarman. He's starting to gather a few
scalps is the young Blue in Number 29.
The on ball match ups will be a rotation of McLeod, Riccuito,
Johnson, Edwards, Bickley, Goodwin against Ratten, Camporeale,
Hulme, Rice, Hickmott, Mansfield, Culpitt, and Fletcher. This is
where I think the Blues will win the match. Their on ball
rotations on and off the bench allow them to keep consistent
pressure on the opposition and negate their superior pace whilst
providing plenty of ball into their forward half. Porter, Hotton,
Whitnall against Clarke Biglands and Robran will be a break even
but it's at their feet that the match will be won.
The Blues by 24 points.

Western Bulldogs v. Brisbane
Saturday, 21 April 2001 - Colonial Stadium 2:10 PM
When asked for a preference in write-ups for this round I
naturally jumped on this game, recalling all the scratching,
biting and name calling of previous Bulldogs v Lions encounters.
Looking upon it now, this match could end up being a relatively
sanitary affair. Heck, it could even be played in a somewhat
sporting manner, as the stars of former shock scandals will go
largely unrepresented. Most notable of these is Libba, who has
peaked early this year and therefore will not participate in this
event. Strike one up for Brisbane. Also, scratching victim Steven
Lawrence has converted from Lions Club to Sainthood and will not
be required to blow the whistle on any Krueger-like afflictions
this week, nor will Craig McCrae from the sidelines. There is also
the refreshed scrutiny of media and AFL attention resulting from
this year's Round 2 shenanigans, which may or may not influence
the usual groin hugging, eye poking, tit tweaking, Chinese-Arm
burning, hair pulling etc special playing rules between these two
sides. We should expect less mad wrestling and better football
this time around and that, I can assure you, is a very good thing.
Although they would give their right wing to be playing this one
in the tropics, Brisbane do have the edge over The Western
Tacticians in past results. Brisvegas won all three last year
(including one finals match) by an average of 40 points, including
one of those at Docklands.
Coach Lethal could have done worse than to promote regular
Brisbane spearhead Daniel Bradshaw, who in recent engagements
against The Dogs had feasted on hauls of 7 and 5 majors. Instead
they will rely on Alistair Lynch, young talent Jonathan Brown and
if fit, Luke Power who with a season goal tally of 0, must be more
than a little keen. Justin Leppitsch will not be there courtesy of
a hamstring injury and veteran Shaun Hart is suffering from a foot
complaint. Adding some character to the back line of Pike,
Akermanis and Mal Michael will be the return of Darryl White, with
more than one of the above players capable of moving up the
ground. Even without Leppitsch, Brisbane should be able to cover
The Bulldogs' half-arsed goal scoring options, which basically
consists of one Chris Grant and a ship load of hope.
To win this game The Bullies would need to (a) shut down The Lions
powerful ball getters, containing the likes of Voss, Black,
Ashcroft, Chris Scott and Lappin and (b) capitalise via West,
Brown, Johnson and Romero with brains set on attack and a free
flowing goal target the directive. Fluid play, positive thinking
and strict aggression suits The Dogs. Subtlety, softness and a
guilt complex do not, as was the case last week against
Collingwood.
In what should be a fantastic contest between two hungry clubs,
Brisbane holds the cards that should point them towards a narrow
victory. We just hope that no one gets killed trying.
Tip: Brisbane by 5 points.

Fremantle v. West Coast
Saturday, 21 April 2001 - Subiaco 5:40 PM (7:40 PM AEST)
Let's survey the scene. West Coast "Once were Warriors" Eagles vs
Fremantle Dockers, the upstart keen to take advantage of the ex-
champ who has fallen on hard times and move in on its turf. The
Eagles pride is sure to lift them for this local derby but the
Dockers would be well aware that they suffered at the hands of the
Eagles the first 9 times they met before improving the record to
10-2 in recent times.
Both teams are capable of producing good football and even more
capable of producing a shocker. On the strength of the form shown
so far, we are looking at two sides that will be planning their
end of season trip sooner than most. Such is the unknown factor
about these two teams that I won't even hazard a guess as to what
the matchups might be. In fact, I suggest that no taggers are
employed at all for fear of creating a scoreless draw.
West Coast have had a serious injection of life through the
'world's oldest draftee' Troy Wilson and his seven majors against
the Saints. One would do well to remember though that the Saints
defence looks anything but sound. They also have vast experience
with Jakovich, the Matera boys, McIntosh and a touch of class with
Wirrpunda, Cousins, Kemp and Banfield.
The Dockers have a burning desire to be somebody and the drive and
enthusiasm from Fletcher, Bell, Modra, McManus and Black may just
get them there. Their magic comes from the impressive Brad
Bootsma and the incredible vision of Paul Hasleby. Gee that guy
is amazing! Troy Cook also has yet to rediscover his sensational
2000 form and will be a plus if he can produce it here.
If you can draw a line through the form of the two sides, you will
see that the Dockers have gone down fighting against the two teams
of the moment in Hawthorn and Collingwood and the Bomber Beating
Blues Boys. The Eagles have only fired up against a Saints lineup
who have managed to fool all of the pre-season punters. The
Dockers are due but they have to be courageous and find the same
form that has seen them go so close thus far this season.
It's too early for the Dockers to start beating their own Drum ...
the Eagles will be the Judge of that! (very sorry). Otis Redding
had a lyric that went something like this: Sitting on the Dock of
the bay... wasting time. Well, this is no time for the Dockers to
sit comfortably and procrastinate with a talented list. Time for
action.

PORT TO RELEASE THE MONKEY OF THE SAINT!
Port Adelaide should release one of two monkeys this weekend
against Saint Kilda. Both Saint Kilda and the Kangaroos have
never been beaten by Port Adelaide before and this weekend’s game
is one of many goals the team have set themselves to achieve since
the pre-season.
Although Port’s record against the Saints is extremely poor it
must be remembered that of the five games played between the sides
only one of them has been at Football Park and that was back in
1997 in Port’s first season.
Sixth place Port Adelaide coming off a 65 point win against cross-
town rival Adelaide last weekend faces a twelfth placed Saint
Kilda side hurting after an 18 point loss to a lowly West Coast.
Probably for the first time this year Matthew Primus will actually
get some kind of challenge in the ruck by the likes of Peter
Everitt and Matthew Capuano. Another fine performance by Cain
Ackland in the ruck should push his chances for nomination in the
Rising Star Award.
Who can win the ruck and give the ball to the smaller running
players first could well tell the outcome of this match. The
match up between Saint Kilda’s Robert Harvey and Port Adelaide’s
Josh Carr should be a highlight of the match, Carr normally gets
the tag role on the opposition star players and Carr will not
doubt aspire to the challenge. Carr has once before played on
Harvey and been taught a lesson but that was only in his fourth
game of AFL and much experience has been gained since.
Both sides have a damaging forward line but the Saints defence is
very suspect. If Port is to get first use of the ball out of the
centre the Saint Kilda side may struggle to keep Port to a
reasonable score. One major improvement in the Port side this
year is their ability to not only kick accurately but to also kick
match-winning scores. Previously a match winning score was hard
to come by for Port but with a range of smalls kicking goals like
Wanganeen (6 last week) flanked by others like Cockatoo-Collins
and Burgoyne all is now not relied on Tredrea and Cornes.
Port will be buoyed with the return of Darren Mead to the defence
at the expense of Jarrod Poulton to further bolster a defence that
will be challenged by Saint Kilda forwards Aaron Hamill and
Stewart Loewe along with part time forwards Peter Everitt, Barry
Hall and Fraser Gehrig. Saint Kilda will miss the likes of Craig
Callaghan, Justin Plapp and Jason Traianidis all succumbing to
injuries.
For me Port Adelaide should be able to win in a close tussle and
give Malcolm Blight and his team the wave towards the end of the
match just like we did to Adelaide last week although the wave
came in the third quarter.

Geelong v. Kangaroos
Sunday, 22 April 2001 - Shell Stadium 2:10 PM
Geelong versus Kangaroos
For Roo fans, games against Geelong almost have the same feel as a
family gathering with the distant relatives that you see only
twice a year. Consider this. The Geelong list has the following
players who have all pulled on the royal blue and white striped
jumper at some stage: Glenn Kilpatrick (at under 19s level), Kent
Kingsley, Tim McGrath, Cameron Mooney, and Brad Sholl. Adding to
that, Brad Sholl’s brother, Craig was a dual premiership player
with the Roos, and the brothers of Adam Houlihan (Damian) and
Daniel Lowther (Nick) were also on the North list in recent years.
If you turn to the coaching staff, Mark Thompson and Norm Dare
have both served under Denis Pagan. Like all families, there is
bad blood, and in this case, it comes in the form of former
Geelong captain, Leigh Colbert, who now calls Arden Street home.
It’s been almost a year and a half since Colbert left Geelong, but
it’s believed that there has never been a football conversation in
that time between a Kangaroos and Cats fan where the Cats fan
hasn’t had a good, long whinge about his departure.
Geelong have had a promising start to the season. Last week, they
had the chance to take their first major scalp in Melbourne, but
failed. However, they did play some very good football, but may
lack that extra bit of confidence and experience that could have
gotten them over the line. In the other corner, we have the
Kangaroos. To the surprise of many, they’re sitting sixteenth.
To the shock of all, their percentage is lower than the value of
the Australian dollar. While the Cats may have lacked that extra
bit of confidence, the Roos are totally devoid of it.
So, for the first time in seven years, the Roos head down to
Kardinia Park for what could be a bloody culling, but……the Geelong
coach has an interesting dilemma. He has stated that he wants the
Cats to adopt a harder and more physical approach to the way they
play their football. He has given his charges the Kangaroos and
Essendon as their role models. However, in recent weeks, the
Kangaroos have been beaten by teams with vastly superior skills
with physical contests hardly entering into the calculations that
determine who wins the match. So, does Thompson tell his players
to use their skills or do they enter into a man on man contest?
If anything is going to get the Roos out of the slump, it’ll be a
physical contest. You just know the likes of Carey, Archer,
McCartney, Martyn, Pickett, and Stevens would relish it. You know
that if these players lift, they will carry the others with them.
Okay, I’m grasping at straws, but it is an interesting
proposition.
So, Mark Thompson, if you’re reading this, take the risk. Let
your players go man on man with the Roos. Let’s see if your
players remembered to put bricks in their handbags.
My tip? A few melees, lot’s of bruised bodies, $20,000 in fines,
the 4 points heading up to Arden Street, and Colbert to walk off
the ground with his head held high and the award for best on
ground.
Tips for the other games: Collingwood, Sydney, Carlton, Brisbane,
West Coast, Port Adelaide, and Melbourne.

Hawthorn v. Melbourne
Sunday, 22 April 2001 - MCG 2:10 PM
This game is shaping up to be the match of the round. The Hawks
are in great form, having won 3 from 3. Meanwhile the Dees are on
the way back to their best after a tight but gutsy win against
Geelong last week. Both teams are top four material this season.
It should be a pretty free-flowing sort of game and could end up
being a bit of a shoot out. That is, unless rain spoils the party.
Much has been made of the Hawks spine of Hay, Croad, Crawford,
Holland and Thompson and rightly so. Crawford’s performance last
week must have delighted Hawks fans, especially when he kicked
that great goal in the last quarter to seal the game. Nick Holland
should be back into the side this week while Tony Woods is less of
a chance to play. Holland is a player who takes heaps of contested
marks and will need to be closely watched by the Dees defence if
he plays. It’s not just the big names creating problems for the
opposition. Players like Jade Rawlings, Joel Smith, Tim Clarke and
John Barker are doing really well at the moment.
While the Hawks Brownlow medallist looks back on track, so does
Melbourne’s. Shane Woewodin was best on ground last week and
kicked an inspirational goal that put the Dees in front in the
second term. He needs to put in a similar performance this week.
There has been some controversy this week with the Dees David
Schwarz being charged with racial vilification. Time will tell
whether this affects his performance on Sunday. Also there has to
be a question mark over Jeff White’s fitness. He came off the
ground in the final quarter last week with a knee injury but is
said to be available.
I’m going to tip the Hawks this week. While the Dees were great
last week, they were pretty ordinary before that. The Hawks have
more players in form. Forwards such as Thompson, Holland and Dixon
should be too much for the Dees. It should be a pretty close and
entertaining game.
I predict Hawthorn to win by 20 points.

4) The Quick Snap
The only way is up ...
Comment from 'The Half Back Flanker' http://www.afltips.com/people/halfbackflanker.html
The slide would now appear complete. After playing off for the
premiership in 1998, Adelaide and the Kangaroos currently sit in
15th and 16th position on the ladder, with no wins from their
first 3 games and a woeful percentage.
How can sides that won 4 premierships between them in the late
1990s have slipped so far? As with most things in football, the
answer is not a simple one.
One of the main motivating forces that drive a side to win a
premiership is hunger. Adelaide had it in 1997 and 1998. The
Kangaroos had it in 1996 and 1999. But of course, after you have
won 2 premierships, the hunger is not as strong. Once you have
achieved the ultimate goal, and then done it again, the desire is
not the same as that of other contenders, those who have yet to
get there or haven’t been there for a long time.
Another factor is playing personnel, and an examination of the
playing lists of both Adelaide and the Kangaroos shows a similar
trend. Most of their key players are getting toward the end of
their careers, and there does not appear to be enough talented
younger players stepping up to take their place.
Whilst recycling discarded players from other clubs may bring
short-term results, it is investment in quality young players that
guarantees long-term success for a club.
And, as with any examination of a football team’s performance,
there is the coaching staff to consider.
Does Gary Ayres have what it takes to succeed at the highest
level? Aside from his debut year as coach of Geelong, his coaching
resume does not radiate a great deal of success. It is no surprise
that most betting agencies list Ayres at the shortest odds of
being the first coach sacked this season. Let’s face it, the
football public in Adelaide will not be very forgiving to a coach
that misses the finals 2 years in a row.
In contrast, Denis Pagan has taken the Kangaroos to 3 grand finals
for 2 premierships, as well as a succession of preliminary finals.
His record at senior level is very good, by any comparison. But,
are his key players starting to tire of the same voice, saying the
same things, year in year out? Perhaps the message is becoming old
and repeated once too often. After being the man in charge of the
Kangaroos for so long, Pagan may well need a new club and a fresh
challenge.
Given their present form and the quality of their playing lists,
it is hard to see either Adelaide or the Kangaroos rising up the
ladder very far this season. One consolation is that at least it
will give them the opportunity to draft some talented youngsters
at the end of the year, and begin their rebuilding process in
earnest.
Footnote:
With regard to some feedback received concerning the article about
playing football on Good Friday, I would like to state that an
underlying principle of our democracy is our freedom of both
religion and expression. As part of this, the public should be in
a position to choose whether or not they attend church and/or
watch football on Good Friday, and should not have it dictated to
them by others. All I ask is that as far as football is concerned,
everyone has that freedom of choice, and that the AFL (or anyone
else) does not decide for us.
